ATI has been good to me and i've always stuck with them as i've had endless problems when using Nvidia cards. The glory days however are over for ATI and they did make the best cards like the 9800 all the way upto the x1 series, however lately they've just gone sooo crap. I dunno what their problem is but their cards on paper look great and yet they just arn't getting the drivers right like Nvidia are doing and it's letting the cards down sooo much.
ATI's latest 7.11 drivers most people can't even install and instead of ATI fixing it, they just ignore us and no sign of any new drivers lol. It's just soooo stupid because my current ATI card is much more powerful than my Nvidia 7900gt and yet i get worse performance than it in Crysis thanx to the stupid drivers.
Tell ya when the Nvidia 9 series comes out i'm switching over cause maybe it was AMD that ruined them, seeing as AMD have gone downhill in recent years too lol.

I've always used nvidia cards and they haven't let me down.
My newest card is the 8600 GT 512mb and it is great!
Never had issues with cards from either company. I'm curious right now since AMD is releasing a dual core video card next month

Ive always stuck with ati since it treated me better but i havent gotten a new card or updated my drivers in a while so i wouldnt know. But maybe you should try some independent drivers such as omega drivers, just google omega drivers for ati and you should find them, ive heard alot of good things about them in the past.
The issue, I believe, is that AMD bought ATI. As soon as that happened AMD and ATI both went down the tubes. I think they got caught up in all the details of running both companies and simply got bogged down. They weren't prepared to properly handle the merger.
I think in the next year or so you'll see AMD and ATI straightening out. Either that or you'll see a whole lot of new executives working for AMD.
If the ATI drivers are anything like they were back in the day...don't use the newest set. Roll back to the previous set and you should be fine.
For some reason they seem to like jacking up their drivers when they first release them. Use to be a big problem for gamers.

I have the same card but in the BFG Overclocked model and it runs very smoothly on all my games. It's 3dMark scores are very high compared to the initial 8600 GT card testings and many ppl talked bad about it, however the late marketed cards are much better. The 8800 GT is the sure way to go, however with it's limited supply driving up prices, it's just not economically feasable for many to spend about $400+.

I used to have big issues with several different ATI cards running games. Really random stuff like screen flickers and black screen. I've used Nvidia chipsets since then without problem, however you have to account for the name brand element as well. For example, I had an XFX card that was nothing but trouble. Good experiences with Albatron, Chaintech, Shuttle and PNY. The only ATI I own now is in my laptop, so I suppose they're okay so long as you don't build your own system or buy one as an upgrade.
Regarding AMD, they've always treated me well. Intel doesn't seem to handle gaming as well (although I hear they're better for business applications). The only thing to consider with AMD is their chips tend to run a little hot so if you're an overclocker, make sure you've got the fan an power supply to support what you're doing.
