I think it's misleading to make comparisons between FPS's with unlockables and MMORPG's, because FPS's are generally played in short bursts whereas RPG's are usually played in a session. I'd also question the longevity of some FPS's, because they are played in a less structured way than an RPG.
Yes you have clans etc, but not many FPS players are part of a clan. They've played the single player aspect (if it has one) and want to get into the multiplayer part or even jump straight in.
MMOFPS's is also a confused acronym. To get decent ping, most maps support 64 players. I think XBOX users are limited to 32 (I don't know as I don't own one). An MMOFPS is something like Planetside or maybe some of those mech games, but to me an MMOG is a game with limited number of players.
I actually think the future of gaming, and I've long thought this, is the merging of genres or even the creation of entirely new ones.
The unlockable MMOG style could be part of an MMORPG 'mini-game'. To me that would be awesome!
Y'know, i can only think of a few MMOFPS games coming out...Huxley, the face of Mankind..if it's still around..., and a new company has one in the making, they don't want it announced but it sounds to be a good game...
Personally I loved Planetside. Can't say it's been able to stand the test of time as it's physics and gameplay would have to be pretty heavily tweaked for modern gamers to like again, but was a well gone game in my opinion. I would love to see an MMOFPS design similar to Planetside with more working with the ecology, space, and the civilizations that one is fighting for....
