Howdy, Stranger!

It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!

Well, you finally have a new MMO

After years of whining and complaining you finally have a new MMO and one that is trying something completely  different.  You ask, why are they all WoW rip offs, why doesn’t someone try something new?

Well PotBS opens today and how many of you whiners are going to try it?  If I wasn’t having so much fun with TF2 I would try it.

true MMO mastery isn't about playing them, it's about having the most MMO boxes to stare at while you rant.

(I'm have a sarcastic streak today)

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

POTBS is certainly not shit. I can say it won't be for everybody. To truely get the most out of it you will certainly need to participate in PVP, you will want to get into the economy, and be a part of a solid group. Solo is fun but can get a bit stale after a while. The ship models are great. Sea battles are nicely done (Especially with an Agia card).

Boarding and Land based combat needs work. Also, One of the easiest tactics to win a battle is blast the ship with shot that kills crew, grapple, kil the captain...rinse, repeat. They need to make that less of an option and make it a bit easier to actually sink a ship solo.

I see this game as pretty solid now with tons of potential down the road as the economic state grows and the contested territories start to be impacted by large PVP sea battles, etc. Fun stuff so far but I am not that high level yet from the pre-release. I was too busy to max out my Characters during the pre launch.

To the original posters point. It is a departure from the standard MMO model which is nice. It is probably closer to Eve in play style (which I only know from reading about as I have never actually played Eve).

The thing is that PotBS is not an MMO that is COMPLETELY different. The pirate theme is rather unique as well as the ship combat but like most other MMO's there is XP based levelling and repetitive questing.

in all fairness, I don't think people were "whining and complaining" for something simply "new", as much as both "new" and "good".

Sadly, I think POTBS is only partially "new" and not very "good"...

Yeah, i would shut up now. PotBS is the first non WoW clone we see in a long time. I played PotBS for two weeks and sadly its noting for me : (

I need more character involvement, not ships. Otherwise i would still play EVE.

Why try to do something new when you can do the same crap over and over! Actually I don't understand why devs keep doing what WoW did, especially considering how well done WoW is. Creating something new and innovative would sell more than trying to kill WoW (and failing at it).

I'm going to try it !  At first I wasn't enthused, but after reading about the new ideas and cool aspects borrowed from other games

    New ideas:

    1.  Take control of an 18th centure ship, using your ship, the wind, and tactics to defeat your enemy.

    2.  Use various sword-fighting styles; and keep you balance up while trying to raise initiative

    3.  Players use PvE missions to create unrest in an enemy port; or to defend against such unrest.  After enough unrest accumulates, the seazone around the port becomes pvp!!   If you are a trader, you can make big $ by delivering goods in that pvp zone but LOOKOUT you could also lose your cargo.

    Borrowed from other games:

    1.  Eve:  player-driven economy, and some pvp

    2.  Planetside: Ports can change hands based on player actions.  I guess DAOC did this too?

    3.  Everquest: swordplay and, no doubt, monsters?? :P

The more I think about it, the more excited I am to try it !!  MUST GET HOME  :P

Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

Because one business approach is that even when there is competition, a small percentage share of a big market can still be profitable. We know for sure that the market for quest/item driven fantasy MMORPGs is at least 10 million. If you can get 5-10% then you are looking at 500k to 1 million subscribers.

MMO's with other themes don't have nearly the same established market size.

To be fair, we borrowed the idea of swordplay from actual 1720 swordplay, not Everquest.   And if you're talking inspiration for the flavor and mechanics, also not Everquest.  More like Erol Flynn.
