EvE is going to be on Valve's Steam system with a 21 day trial for new players! I just logged into Steam to check it out and it says coming soon, so not quite there yet. Good news for anyone that has been wanting to try it out, can get 3 weeks instead of the usual 2 and looks like you gt a $5 credit towards your first paid month if you decide to sign up. Pretty good deal overall.

Steam is taking over the (virtual) world!!!

I am not really sure if i should be happy or sad about that, to be honest.
I like that they're extending the trial but, uh, yeah, steam sucks.
What, two weeks isn't enough to know if you're gonna pay or not? As far as Steam goes, I see no purpose. There is already more than enough distribution and advertising for EVE. Now we're just gonna have all the FPS Half-Life2 nitwits.

Personally I think this is great news for CCP and EVE. It is sure to twist the nipples of some of the more jaded players --those folks that seem to thrive on discontent-- but I am pleased to see CCP get the recognition they deserve.
And I'm not bothered by "FPS nitwits". Quite frankly, I've never found any compelling evidence that FPS gamers are any more obnoxious than MMO gamers, generally speaking.

Games like EVE really ought to be F2P anyway.
Doesn't surprise me. The average Cs-Player also plays WoW and comes to eve to instantly grind to best gear to grief newbies. Then he realizes that this isnt possible, and starts multiple whinethreads on the forums about how eve sucks. Wow/Gw and Counter Strike are known for having the worst communities, and i do not want them in Eve.
At least their whinethreads will be a funny read..and maybe some lost souls (preferrably of older age) will come to eve and integrate into the community.
sorry to burst some people's bubbles but EVE already has really immature kiddies flying around. doesn't matter what game there will always be some.
regardless if only Steam worked better this would be a gem.

I am glad to see Eve on Steam. When Steam first came out I didn't like it much but since picking up Orange Box and seeing the latest Steam I have changed how I feel about it. Steam has matured into a great distribution platform for games. The more players that come to Eve the better even if some of them are immature kiddies. Those that are truly immature and seeking the instant gratification of CS and WoW will leave soon enough so it will be a non issue. Immature losers exist in all games.
As for the comment about Eve should be f2p I just have to ask. Are you freakin serious ? Have you ever played the game ? This isn't some crap farmfest like Dungeon Runners here. CCP deserves every dollar they get for this game. The servers needed to run Eve is not some piece of shit 5 year old desktop you can just throw in the closet and let it run. Eves servers are the best of any mmo on the market and yes they are better than WoWs. Eve has a 2 week free trial and will be 3 weeks through steam while just about every other mmo out there gives you 7 days at best. Eve also only costs 20$ to buy and includes the first month and Steam will have a 5 dollars off deal basically making the game free to buy, just pay the monthly fee. Hell if you wanted to farm up 390 million isk in game you can use that and buy a 90 day time card so you can technically pay the game for free if you like to farm. Name one other AAA mmo out there that even comes close to the bargain that Eve is.
Free to buy sounds like an interesting pay structure - lol.
What I meant by it being F2P was that it is generally seen as a lower pop game with under 200,000 subs (http://mmogdata.voig.com/) it would look to benefit from mini transactions or a financial platform similar to GW's.
I realize the EVE fanbois will attack all posts of this nature but it is not a bad idea to populate a game with more people. More people could possibly make up for some of the weaknesses of EVE.
This is my opinion anyway (as it is my post). you are entitled to yours.
I'd like to correct that here:
If you create a trial account, you can just add gametime via a completely normal gtc. Thats the was most players enter the game, so you actually never buy the game at all. Just monthly fee.
Oh and microtransactions are retarded, f2p games may be free but they are also mostly much lower quality than p2p games with much slower developement cycles. Also the GW platform doesn't work, hence the reason GW2 is going back to traditional P2P.
Actually, considering the roughness of the servers recently, I doubt an influx of new via Steam is a good thing

Guild Wars 2 is staying Free to Play... That has been confirmed many times and is even stated over on the Guild wars 2 Wiki... Please get your facts straight before spouting drivel!
@swaininc: No one is attacking you at all, in fact you resorted to attacking me by picking out a slip of words with "free to buy"
Just because a game may not have the subscription numbers of the bigger mmos out there it doesn't mean that it should be F2P. From the few F2P mmos I have checked out they seem to be extremely low population servers of around a couple hundred players or the game design is extremely simplistic in that they are simple grindfests with random generated dungeons. Eve is neither simplistic in design nor is the server low population. I think over 40k people on Sundays is evidence of that.
@batolemaeus: Ah ok, I've never done the trial and gtc payments at all. Thanks for clearing it up.
@Lonesamurai1: The only server issues are in Jita where this Sunday on my map I saw an average of 1400 people in that system and in LARGE scale fleet combat where 600-700 people try and cram into a system with all their drones out. Both of these situations are massive loads on those systems but every other region and system in the game continue to work like any other time of the week.
The large fleet combat issue will hopefully be dealt with later this year when CCP gets their new super servers. For now though not even the mighty Blizzards servers could handle that problem. There is a reason they moved the pvp into instanced battlegrounds. The Jita issue is purely an economic issue which CCP has already stated that they wish to address in a creative gameplay way providing incentives to do their trade elsewhere without rather than penalize them for being in Jita. Simply throwing hardware at it will just mean more people can cram in there but too many still will and create the same problem as now.
Yes i know... I do run a community radio station for the game, but thank you for reposting that information

I cant help pointing out that MMOGDATA is pretty out of date numbers wise.

I tried EVE , didn;t like it at all
Thats what free trials are for i guess.

MMOGDATA is woefully out of date. EVE has, confirmed, over 245,000 active accounts. As of 2 months ago.

and...
"EVE not being a twitch FPS type game, that just means more targets... I doubt players like that would have the patience for EVE. At least it's more exposure for the game."

That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
Erm...
What's wrong with widening distribution of the game? Currently you can only download the game from the EVE official site. And, frankly, there isn't all that much advertizing for it nor does it have any shelf presence in any stores to spread it's image.
This move can only help the game to grow, to be honest.

Stop acting like the elitest douche that the Eve community is starting to get a reputation for having lately. Not all games available through Steam are twitch fps games, there's a pretty large variety of game types available through Steam. And not all FPS gamers are immature ADD punk kids, sure some of those types definately play those games but then again those people exist everywhere.
Eve can always use more exposure. You would be amazed at how many people have never heard of the game. I recently left WoW to return to Eve and when I told my guild I was doing this everyone was asking 'What's Eve ?". Ive even convinced some to check out Eve and so far they are really enjoying the game.
"steam" sounds good, it sounds good for advertising and making some extra cash.
EVE, is for me, not a game for the masses, maybe there is a turn in the strategy and CCP trying to reach the masses. if this will be happen, i swear, it takes not a long time and we get the first "wow compatibility patch".
i play EVE because it is currently a bit more challenging like other mmorpgs. lets hope EVE can keep this status in future.

They are actually very close to actuals. But conjecture is the name of the game on posts.
