If Sony Wins the HD DVD wars....

Moaky07Moaky07 Member Posts: 2,096

Does it affect their stance in the entertainment sector...IE taking more risks?

It appears they are going to win from what I have been reading...but I suppose nothing is said and done. So take this post as a what if.

What if they win...

Does it promote sales of their PS3? I went with XBox 360 but been working on the wife to let me have a PS3 also since it has the player included. Will other people view the PS3 in the same way....pay for a player, and get a game system all in one?

Does it prompt SOE to spend  money to recapture the NA market for MMO gaming? The Agency and DC game are slated for future release...but do they invest in their current titles? More ways to bring EQ up to date(they announced AA changes to help bring in new folks...maybe a new engine as well as clean up older content in a more timely fashion). Tune up MxO a bit? Make a playable game out of SWG?

Do they slap more money into EQ2(marketing/various) in an attempt to get closer to WOW in NA? Do they try another title to compete? Or perhaps with an influx of money they purchase more studios? Bioware would of been an awesome addition to them(or anyone else for that matter)...obsidion is still out there I believe. Other game studios as well.

SOe has the advantage now in that folks can see Blizzard/Vivendi raking in a ton of money...yet how much do they invest back into their cash cow? SOE used to be in their position...and made a lot of folks angry with their tactics. In some ways Blizzard seems to be repeating them IMO. Could the same happen to Blizzard? I am not a marketing wizard...but I would have to think SOE could spin the little man status to their advantage.

There are a ton of more questions/ideas that can be raised from this.  Just wondered what everyone else thought.

Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

Sony wins this war, their opponent left the field.  Blu Ray is left alone...until next gen tech come by.

As to try to figure what are the impact on SOE or the PS3...I dunno...Your guess is prolly going to be more accurate than mine.  I have no idea.

until Blu stand alone players are upgradable like the PS3, yes it should increase sales for the PS3

as of right now, PS3 is the only blu player than can support profile 2.0.  Not many stand alones support 1.1, and those that do cost a lot more than the PS3

Not to mention the fact that this past January, the PS3 had a huge jump up in sales in the NPD rankings (coming just behind the Wii).

Looks like the best Bluray player out there is still the ps3. Not only will it support all "profiles", it's also the cheapest one out there.

Oh yeah, and it plays kickass games as a free bonus.

Sony winning the HD-DVD war will have no bearing whatsover on MMO's.  While they are under the same banner Sony and SOE are completly different companies, run completely different they just have the same parent company thats all.

What the hell do you mean if?

Toshiba already announced that they are stopping production of HD-DVD players, Microsoft has discontinued the add-on..

Warner left, Paramount left... Universal Left

WHAT THE HELL DO YOU MEAN "if"

As Methane pointed out, Sony already won. There is no "if".

Blu-Ray wins, that means people will see PS3 as viable alternative Blu-Ray player, driving the PS3 sales up.

Yup, even Microsoft is considering it now

Microsoft's Xbox could consider Blu-ray support

While it appears the industry made the decision for the consumers does not mean the consumers will jump yet as the prices of the blue ray movies are still to high.

I would imagine as we see the prices of hd dvd players nose dive folks will grab things up use there 5 free movie rebates and enjoy that for a while till player prices come down as well as movies come down.

Just because they made up their minds doesn't mean jq public will follow along with the still very high price points........

Actually, they can drop the price on the blu-ray movies now. Since there's no longer any competition.

There is a good chance that Blu Ray will never reach the penetration level in the marketplace to actually consider it the winner.  My guess is that DVD will outlast Blu Ray and we will see a newer format come out in a couple of years.

If I remember correctly Panasonic makes Blu Ray drives as well so Microsoft doesn't even have to deal with Sony at all nor pay them any money.  They can work with Panasonic to get blu ray drives for the Xbox360.

    Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)

    Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)

lol what ever dude.. dont listen to Toshiba's PR bull

BluRay has outsold HD-DVD straight for more than a year... And for the last couple months.. has been outselling HD-DVD by 2 - 3 times.

Bluray Standalones have also been outselling Hd-DVD since november..

    And that is just America..

EVERYWHERE ELSE on the planet HD-DVD was doing MUCH MUCH MUCH WORSE...

The industry was just going where the consumers were going... and thats Blu..

Microsoft and Sony have no problems working with each other... They are actually REALLY CLOSE partners... People seem to think just because one small portion of the companies are rivals that the ENTIRE company is at odds.... which just isn't the case.

I won't buy a PS3 just because it can play Blu-Ray.  I don't really give a damn.  A normal DVD player is fine for me.  I don't really see the point of buying a more expensive version of the same movie.  Now if the PS3 had good games, then yea.. I'd buy one, but as of now I haven't seen anything blow my boat.
