World of warcraft. Then after it became it went to crap with all the arena bs. Use to be fun not caring and raiding citys and everyone raiding Ratchet. Now there's no more raiding so the pvp aspect of wow went to shit you could say, in my eyes. But ye WoW was probably the best beta I tested.

rose online was prolly my most enjoyable beta, though i didn't exactly think it was great.

since i quit eq a couple summers ago, i've joined lots of betas, and just haven't really caught on with any of them.  i've tried several free trials as well with the same results, getting bored after a few lvls.

recently i was in the beyond protocol beta, best way to describe it i think would be starcraft city builder in an eve online universe.  also doing the tabula rasa, seems decent though laggy, free trial and just finished downloading pirates of the burning sea beta.

I had the most fun in the LotRO open beta because it was very complete and most of the bugs that remained were not annoying but often hilarious.

That's just an example where like, animals would run into barriers and just stop moving. I had many pictures of animals simply running into the side of rocks and there would be hoards of them stuck there, but unfortunately they were all on my old hard drive which burned up.

You must not have been in many open betas, LOTRO was by far the worst beta ever. LAGFEST!!!!

The best beta i have been in would be WoW and Guild Wars, for anyone that was in the WoW beta remember the Giant Chichken they would spawn, wow those were the days

Guild Wars was a great Beta. Believe it or not Auto Assault had a decent open beta. Too bad the game bit after release lol.

Nah, I never experienced any LAGFEST!!!! so I guess we have two totally different viewpoints. Maybe it depended on the server because I played the game during peak times without any problems whatsoever. Oh well.

my vote would go for SWG beta believe it or not.. It had alot of bugs BUT the game was extremly different and there was soo much anticipation of the whole how to become a jedi thing... SWG open beta as well as closed beta was a blast

SilkRoad was possibly the best for me. I enjoyed the game, but when my favorite community died I just kinda stopped playing it alltogether.

I figured it might help to define terms as to what "best" might be. I would assume an average of all relevant factors such as; lag or no lag and fixing of said lag, fun, bugs and fixing of bugs, graphics, beta community, support, dev interaction, beta events, end of beta events the list is endless. I will throw a few out there that I remember fondly.

EQ open beta: At the time it was awesome in terms of community (built a group since beta 2) and amount of players. Since it was basically the first it was amazing on all fronts. The art and creature animations were fantastic for the time, and most of the zones and dungeons were really unique so that each new dungeon was a delight and immersive. The end of beta event was great because you got to see all the the rare god models and nemesis gods duke it out while we all battled minions and cheered (no way we could kill gods but  if you were willing to die then you took a few shots ;p). Only complaints would have been the lag during the beginning of open beta and the fact that there were some exploits where the pathing of creatures would allow you to kill them without peril. Unfortunately these known major exploits continued into release for a while before they fixed them. I played retail from day one of release until lvl 50 (that was it in the early days) and actually was first to reach 50 on Cazicthule.

Anarchy Online. A first for a sci-fi (pretty much). This game was also amazing with the eye candy and exploring, community and beta community not to mention plenty of other factors. They were also the first with instanced missions (cookie-cutter). Again the problem was bad lag as servers were flooded and that was followed by  the worst launch in history. The exploits during missions really set them back and this and many other known major bugs went through to retail. Also the story never really played out and involved each and every player. Its still a shame as they never took a place at the top where they should have been. I played retail until about lvl 90 and then again a couple years later until about lvl 70.

Asheron's Call II. This was an amazing open beta for eye candy, really fun combat and some pretty cool exploration. It was one of the first games to have the expanded instanced dungeons with content which were also part of a main storyline. I really enjoyed the character classes and skill animations as well as customization. Unfortunately once again a game died pretty much because horrible exploit where you could kill creatures while they just stood there and did nothing. People got to the highest levels in a few days, there was no high level content, the final areas were lame and the game was basically ruined and never recovered.

COH was extremely fun and I may even pick up COV because of the fun I had combating in the COH open beta f (and later in retail until about lvl 43 I think), although the missions became boring after a while and I would hate for that too happen again.

Tabula Rasa. It was quite fun, sci-fi and more of a shooter than games like AO. The shooting was more like Neocron actually. No lag problems, lots of action, graphics were pretty good and the atmosphere is great, you really feel like you are in the middle of a war and the mission are integrated well. The style of play seemed like it would make a cool Warhammer 40 000 mmorpg. Unfortunately upon hitting around lvl 20 I started to get bored with the combat and especially the "jump through hoops missions".

I think those were probably the most fun (and heartbreaking in the case of AO and AC II) out of all the  open betas I've played. Asheron's call one and Ultima Online open betas were cool but EQ beta sucked me in so I didn't get to experience those as much as I would have liked. I did enjoy DAOC open beta but there was something about that game that just struck me as bland and wonky even though I played retail until about lvl 48. Early PVP was great but bugs and nerfs got annoying as hell and I never liked the item system (purple ;p). SWG open beta I thought was horrible as there was nothing in it really. WOW , EQ 2 and Lineage 2  beta's just seemed like more of the same and I they didnt even last a more than a week for me before I was bored. Had I not played a million others then I might have stuck around, but it all just seemed like more of the same.

I'm probably forgetting a few but I guess those are the ones that stuck out in my mind the most.

Basically most new mmorpgs are fun for the first 15-20 levels and then it becomes a treadmill of torture. I guess if they wanted to keep you going at the rate during low levels they would need endless amounts of content ;p

Best...I cannot really say, but one that I really like is Asda Story. The game had cute character. The game wasn't that hard to get into so it easy to play.

  • PieterPieter Member Posts: 29

CoH without a doubt. Played like a retail game should be and last time I played on a trial there was more lag than when I was in beta.

Second would be WoW. Except for the lag spikes and the long waits it was great. First game that felt truly polished. Great storylines, best first 20 levels ever made and the graphics just created a very enthousiastic atmosphere.

LOTRo by far, its smooth, its polished, its complete (minor bugs and balancing issues of course), and the community was great.

Ultima Online back in 96, need i say more?

Now, game developers, get off your arses and give us some real games to play, not this WoW crap we have now.

LotRO had the best OB I have tested, polished, complete, and a friendly community, not saying it is like that at higher levels though, because it isn't.

Lord of the Rings Online, because it's one of the only games I've played in an Open Beta.
