W.E.L.L. online - an amazing Sci-fi MMORPG (with not too much advertisement alas)

AtysTraderAtysTrader Member Posts: 63

(i know i have posted about this game before mates but ijust somehow can't find the thread :( )

WELL online is an original sci-fi MMORPG that is supposed to be released in 2008. It has a pretty impressive budget and is being developed by a Russian company Sibilant. The development is quite lively with new updates being flung at the fan hordes every 2-3 days. Some info about it can be found at the original website: www.wellonline.com However Most of the info has not been officially translated yet so the richest source of game info in english is this fanforum: www.wellonline.proboards99.com

Game mechanics, Lore, Concepts, Screenies - it's all there. Feel free to register and discuss stuff there.

Here's a link toconcept art: http://www.wellonline.com/gallery/show/concept/

And screenies: http://www.wellonline.com/screen/show/screen/

a couple of videos too: http://www.wellonline.com/video/

This game has a dynamic world with alive ecosystems, very interesting and original player races, a techno-magic environment with things like energy melee weapons and spellguns (a lot of attention to ranged combat btw) a skill based (sandbox system) and a very high degree of char specialty customisation. A heap of original MMO ideas on top of that aswell.

Here are some weaps

I have also been following this game for some time. The videos really look amazing. And its so interesting to see another culture then the usual ones makeing a MMO.

    That's the tough part.

The game is in beta (russian language only)

The Russian servers were supposed to be up in the end of february 2008.

The international servers were supposed to follow in some 3-4 months after that.

Sofar the release of Russian servers seems to be delayed "a bit". Having been through same stuff with AoC and TCoS we all know what those "bits" are like...

However if you register at the fan forum I will make sure to inform absolutely all of it's members if any date is announced ;)

As a rule of thumb, I don't mess with MMORPG's whose target market isn't the United States, much less English speakers. When I think of having to have things translated, I only think of communication problems. I also think of where the servers will be and how it will effect my latency. Naturally, I don't expect them to fund servers in the same timezone as me. Another thing about not targeting the United States is that it will be hard to find regular groups with people around my level and time I play. Generally, many U.S. players don't play foreign games unless they are free. If it is free, it definitely is a no go, because free games are grindy and use item shops, which I do not like.

At any rate, thanks for the info.

MMORPG's w/ Max level characters: DAoC, SWG, & WoW

    Currently Playing: WAR
Preferred Playstyle: Roleplay/adventurous, in a sandbox game.

I'm an American, but I speak Russian, so I thought I'd try and sign up for beta.  Heh, no luck, they want your Russian passport number and registration info!

    MMO wish list:

Ok so you'd rather play a game that is grindy and you pay $15.  Either way you pay.  I hope they do make US servers...in the US.  They just need a good publisher out here.

Good news is it looks like translation will be good.  From reading the website and watching the translation type on the videos it looks like they have good Russian to English translation.  Games that don't have good translation in the game also don't have good translation on their site.

    To oyjord:

That's because you are trying to sign up for the "closed" beta :)

The devs have promised us Open beta accounts for the international community that we will distribute through some sort of contest on the fan forums.

    To Jk-Kanosi:

As for There not being enough Americans and servers not being located in the US you are wrong in both cases. Of 106 people we have posting at the fan forums right now 25 are americans and the servers WILL be located in US for the localised version :)

Just try to be not so US-centric mate, somehow Russians and Europeans manage to play MMOs who's servers are located in the US and not complain about it :) You know what they say: Where there is a will there is a way :P

     As for translations:

Sibilant Ltd. Have pretty professional translators. I do not work for them but they sometimes use my translations too. And i have been a synchro-interpreter in Russian parliamnetf for 4 years (in the past) . Even  if other translators are not as qualified I can always correct their mistakes :D

Good to see there are companies spending time on development and innovation instead of advertising and cloning.

Looks like it can be a fantastic game.

Visited the site, read the info.. which wasnt really much info at all, just a lot of "our system is special, and so it is better than others, because unlike theirs, our system is special" type of propaganda... Lost interest at that point.

Sounds very interesting and looks good. However Im a lil bit lazy to read the whole info site. I got one question:

Is it mainly combat based gameplay or will there be some other way to have fun in this game than killing. For example crafting, trading in some major way?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hybrid-LordHybrid-Lord Member Posts: 110

Yea, I heard there are gonna be crating or trader orginizations, or corperations, nut sure if that's just on player or a guild/group of people.

    (pardon the spelling. heh)

Who is looking for a new interesting game probably should keep eyes on this game and this thread,

Good-promising game without any proper advertising.
