No More Cartoon MMORPG's, PLEASE!!!

It seems like most of the new MMORPG's being designed have adopted the WOW/Warhammer cartoonish, exaggerated graphics style.

Kills immersion for me and many others.  I don't want to play in a cartoon world.

WOW's popularity is no reason for dev's to mimic everything in WOW.  Could it not occur to some people that WOW is a success NOT because it's such a good game, but because it is not as bad as the others out there?

LOTRo copied the interface of WoW but replaced the graphics with very hardware demanding versions, not cartoonish at all.  VG goes way out to avoid any trace of WoW influence.  Tabula Rasa has its own style of graphics, big blocks but nothing cartoonish.  Hellgate London goes basically FPS style, with an added option of 3rd person, but the camera is generally differently aligned.  AoC has very dark and wild feeling, something totally missing in WoW.

I wonder why you think every other game is cartoonish.  I do not think there is another major league game that has similar graphics style to WoW, apart from WAR.

There's Everquest 2, Vanguard, Age of Conan, D&D Online, Horizons, Lord of the Rings Online, Star Wars Galaxies, ... do I need to go on?    Seriously..whats the deal? There's plenty for you? Or are you just angry they all suck or aren't out yet?  Or does it just chafe your butt that one game you want to play is sticking to what its IP calls for it to look like?   I fail to see any reason to complain considering the number of games that use a realistic / boring / humourless approach for an art style is actually higher than the WoW / WAR colorful approach.

Please Refer to Doom Cat with all conspiracies & evil corporation complaints. He'll give you the simple explination of..WE"RE ALL DOOMED!

I"m thinking of the big new games coming out.  Some well known, some not.  I'm just seeing more and more cartoonish graphics.

No need for games to have computer-intensive graphics, but I think some of the new ones ought to give us something like DAOC+ graphics.  A warhammer ought to look like a warhammer and not some 300 pound weight on a stick that couldn't possibly support such a mass.

Big new games coming out?  I do not know which one falls into your definition.  I understand that CoS and AoC have pretty unique graphics style, which is far from the WoWish style you are talking about.  WAR has its own style all along, as part of its IP.  WAR is somewhat cartoonish but WAR pre-dates WoW.  So you cannot blame WAR as a copycat.  Aion?  The Korean products have their own style so there is no question about them copying WoW.

Which other new game coming up you have in mind?

Does it really matter and why do you need a list.  The point is many new MMORPG's are copying WOW elements and one of those elements is exaggerated cartoonish graphics.

WAR is the big one (yes, I know Warhammer came up with the exaggerated figures first).  Another, I saw is Citadel of Sorcery.  Then there is the "secret" new Blizzard MMORPG in development, and while no screenshots are publicly available, what do you want to bet "cartoonish" will be a good discription.

And then you have all the Korean Anime-style games and the ones with the big-eyed cutsey midget-like characters.

Everything deserves its niche, of course, but I just hope that WOW"s huge success doesn't set undesired trends.  A lot of folks play WOW, but a lot are looking for something new.  It would help the latter group if that "something new" wasn't too WOW-like, at least not in the undesirable features.

This is something of a brutally bare-bones view of this topic, but I'm going to give it a go anyway.

Ricky there hates MMOs copying WoW's graphics, making them cartoony and not realistic.  He would like immersion in his MMOs, which I think amounts to RPing to some degree, although I could be wrong.

The ensuing posters followed up by posting MMOs that do not, in fact, have cartoony WoW graphics.  Helpful as they are.  AoC, EVE, LotRO, Tabula Rasa, and so forth.

Beyond that, the posters asked what MMOs Ricky knew of that did have WoWish graphics, likely so that they could pelt them with rocks.  Ricky could not produce an example, and instead suggested that this be filed away for future reference, so that no other company gets the bright idea to give their half-hearted WoW rip-off graphics that are also half-heartedly ripped-off from WoW... which would literally result in WoW Lite: The MMORPG That Is Doomed To Fail To Death.

Is that everything, or did I skip over some bit?

I'm afraid it's a little late for that kind of statement....WoWs huge success has blinded developers in areas of gameplay and innovation.  Graphics?  Not sure about that one.

What is the purpose? If you don't care for the graphics of a particular MMO...don't play it ffs

    3.  Unable to provide more backing to his rant?  Check

I've been on the wow forums enough to see this for what it is.

Meh besides WAR , none of the games Im watching look cartoonish. Main ones Im watching are AOC , WAR , SGW and AION. Those are just the ones on the horizon , there are others lll start watching once they get closer to open betas also.

The only games I could think of that may be what the OP is referring to  are some of the F2P junk games that arent even a blip on the radar. But even If that is the case , who cares?

Sure, we'll get right on that. After all, the entire MMORPG genre is here to cater specifically to your needs and your needs alone.....

Maybe the OP is looking for more of a Mortal Kombat 2 look?

Think about the maturity of someone complaining about cartoony graphics?  There's your answer.

EQ was cartoony looking.  DAOC was as well.   Tabula Rasa is cartoony when you think about it.  They're all cartoony in one way or another, since not one of them is fooling anyone into thinking its all "real".  Eve is heavily stylized and could be considered a cartoon.

Typical bashing.  Typical immature ranting.  Whats new=)

Its better to complain about lousy art design in MMOs, rather than if they're too cartoony or not.  Most MMOs of hideous, inconsistent and ugly art design.

I was thinking the exact opposite of you...

I want characters to look like they do in Corpse Bride, Psychonauts, Team Fortress2, Destroy All Humans!, or any of those old wacky adventure games we used to play like Earthworm Jim.  Something that reallly stands out in uniqueness.  I don't understand why they keep feeding us the same damn crap.  Forget realism give us a surreal and absurd world in which to live - put your art designers to work and come up with something that really stands apart.

Couldn't disagree more. I would love more than anything to see a game that has the kind of graphic we saw in Zelda: Windwaker. The graphic is not too heavy on the needs of the computers and yet it can be kept smooth, clean and nice looking. Personally I would like to see more cartoon MMORPGs.

Now that you mention it, having an MMO in the style of Corpse Bride would be awesome in a funky way.

But yes, all games should strive for thier own artistic style, which realistic looking graphics really cant acheive.

I wonder how an MMO done in a Paper Mario/3D style would look. Having 2D style characters (2D flat look with a body that can change within the outline to show the side/front/back of the cartoon character) and a cell shaded style 3D enviroment.

I would like it quite a bit if I ran across an MMORPG that was as quirky and awesome as Psychonauts.  Then again, I am among the twenty three people that payed full price for the game.  Still, that sort of witty writing would lend itself well to an MMORPG, I think.  The graphics for the game, however, aren't so much "Cartoony" as "Surreal", and they're better off for it.

I don't care what the graphics look like, so long as the world feels alive to me.

I don't exactly care for WoW's graphics..but the world feels VERY alive.

All mmorpg's are looking the same, I don't believe you can say some are copies from another, most of them just look the same. And because wow is one of the most popular everybody says that wow looks like every other mmo and that all the mmo's looks like wow...
