Is Call of Duty 4 really that great?

My birthday is coming up in 9 days, and I haven't asked my parents for anything yet. I might just ask for Call of Duty 4 considering the superb ratings it has acheived, but I'd really like to know what makes it such an amazing game. I never took a whole lot of interest in the previous CoD titles; would this one still interest me?

probably the best single player fps game ive ever played. The multiplayers isnt my cup of tea but it was pretty fun.

Well I didn't like it at all. There was only 1 mission in the entire game that I enjoyed (the AC-130 gunship mission). The rest of the game is just wave after wave of respawning enemies, they stop spawning when you move to the spots the game wants you to move to. It feels more like a puzzle game than a war FPS.

Plus it was way too short (finished in a few hours) but that seems to be normal for games these days.

    Get it, for sure.

And when you play single player crank the difficulty, the game lasts way longer.

I remember it took me hours to get to this one level with the ferris wheel and then I got stuck on it <_< played through again with the difficulty on normal... got there in no less than 2 hours.

If you're gonna play single player, put it on the highest difficulty otherwise its just a story telling game.

As for multiplayer, its better than halo.

QFT, if you want a game like cod4 just get RSV2, comes out the 18th. I got bored of CoD4 quickly.

I'm on the exact opposite end of the spectrum from jinbob on this. The single player in CoD4 was boring and short. I think I completed it in about eight hours and it doesn't really have any replayability.

The multiplayer, on the other hand, is excellent. Most of the maps are a good size (though two of them are simply too small) and they included a system of earning weapons and perks through combat experience that keeps it interesting.

There are really only two things about multiplayer that annoy me in CoD4. First, of course, is spawn camping. They tried to alleviate it by making several spawn locations, but they're pretty much on a rotating cycle so if you know where the defaults are, you can camp them.

The second thing that annoys me is that you only get one frag grenade to begin with until level 41 (Colonel); then you get three frag grenades.

Most of the time it's not an issue, but on the smaller maps, colonel and higher ranked players pretty much just rain grenades all over the place, chucking them into the air over buildings, etc.

It's one thing to get shot by a skilled player, but another thing entirely to have a random grenade fly over a building from the next street (or over cargo containers, etc) and blow you up.

No big deal, but like I said, on the smaller maps it can get annoying. You get fair warning in most cases with grenades and on larger maps you have some breathing room to move to cover quickly.

Overall, the graphics are very good and the game is scaleable. My system isn't top of the line (2GB RAM, AMD Athlon XP 3000+, Nvidia 6800 256mb video card) and it handles CoD4 just fine and looks good to boot.

It's easily the best single player FPS, and second only to Halo 1 in the multiplayer aspect.  GET IT!

There's so much wrong with this sentence I have no idea where to start.

if not completely and utterly wrong... atleast Arguable in every single aspect.

the singleplay does about as well as a YMCA kids basketball team playing the harlem globetrotters compared to bioshock.

The online isn't as great as its rumored but unlike halo its functional and a hell of a lot less laggy.

For the PC: A decent game, relatively fun, but short. You do have to stay sharp and pay attention, and sometimes it's a bit difficult to know what they want you to do. Also, infinite-respawning enemies suck, but it's still managable. I've beaten the game on Hardened-level, but haven't tried (and am not interested in) multi-player.

For a console: WTF are you doing getting a FPS for a console?

  • xpowderxxpowderx Member UncommonPosts: 2,078

I agree with some of the other posters. COD IV is by far in the history of FPS the best FPS ever made. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a fps. To me there is no other!

P.S forgot to add. Its the best online FPS. Who plays single player on a good fps anyways?

Ive played bioshock on both PC and console and i like it better on console.

Its not like my machine can't run bioshock i have two BFG tech 8800 GTX's.

I generally prefer all my shooter's on PC but some are actually better for console.

If bioshock had multiplay i would probable prefer PC by a long shot though.

I have it for X360.  By god it has one of the best single player FPS I've ever play. A game that actually brings you in the story, brings out your emotion and actually feels as if you accomplished something. Multiplayer is hella fun. Better than Counter Strike in my opinion.

Completed it in 4 hours and then wondered why I bought it : The multiplayer is overrated crap tbh.... play 5 v 5 servers of counter strike and see true greatness or even TF2.

I don't really think he was worth the response...on one hand he says that people shouldn't be playing FPS on console, and then he says that he isn't interested in playing an FPS online...it doesn't make sense

Draenor: I guess you've never heard of Half-life. The first one.

Why is it necessary that I want to play on-line? What does that have to do with my opinion of it as an FPS? You do realize that they make FPSes with single-player modes that do not require you to play on line, right?

    Apparently not.

Play a 5v5 scrim in CoD4 and see the true greatness of CoD4.

CoD4 is currently one of the best multiplayer shooters for the PC(I don't care about the xbox360 version)

Single player aspect is pretty good, and if you're complaining over the amount of the enemies, then it's simply because you whining over you're getting owned in a single player game.

Im not impressed.  I come from the old school run and gun shooters though.  If you like this new-age Tom Clancy sneaky-sneaky hurry-up-and-wait... wait for it... wait for it... now! brief-and-unsatisfying style of FPS games then go for it.

Drop me into a pitch black room full of imps hurling fireballs with a shotgun and fast run speeds any day- never gets old.

    And P.S.

F.E.A.R. had the best multiplayer... until it basically got abandoned.  Any game with bullets that go through walls- ridiculous CoF penalties- slow run speeds- and a "prone" position is by default, camp city, and therefore- boring as piss all.

Hope you got your things together. Hope you are quite prepared to die. Looks like we're in for nasty weather. ... There's a bad moon on the rise.

Goldeneye was the greatest fps of all time.

I put this on lvl with the Halo series i thought Halo's story was great and CoD4 is great too. I love the mulitplayer friggin amazing. Also the small maps rule if you care about K to D ration then you wouldnt liek it but other wise trying for that 7 kill streak makes it worth while.

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

Ok let me break it down for you:

Singleplayer: is OK, nothing amazing but it's pretty fun for a blast, But I'll tell you now, you don't buy this game for the singleplayer because the multiplayer is superb.

Multiplayer: is brilliant, very polished, and has tons of playability, which is why imo its worth buying, im still playing it, and I got it since it came out. It's just bloody fun, very balanced, even the sniping is great.

I strongly recommend you get it, don't listen to these other fools, most of them suck at fps' which is why it aint there cup of tea, I mean they're probably good at singleplayer, but suck in a twitch/competetive environment.

So yeah go get it, it lives up to the hype.

Its an excellent FPS.  Intense.  Amazing graphics. Great gun feel.   A bit short but very fun while it lasts.  Playing on a hard is a must for any FPS vet.  Its a cake walk otherwise.

I think I'm getting tired of the hide & heal mechanic FPSs have adopted.   In a sci-fi game it works, but in something grounded in reality doesn't jive.

Anxiously awaiting Stalker expansion since its so different from most other shooters out there.

I had many friends who had many xboxes and many TVs.  Halo 1 LAN parties were easily the most fun I have ever had in any shooter to date.  It was pretty limited without friends, but if you had huge groups of people to play with on very consistently, it was a LOT of fun.  Never had that much fun with any other LAN game, or Xbox live game.

COD4 isn't that great IMO.  However, it is probably the best FPS in recent years and in the foreseeable future.

You get awards, unlockable guns, ranks just like in BF2 if you played it.  It's not really a run and gun game like UT/Halo, it is more of the camp type games like CS/RS.
