From what I've read of D and D Online, it seems to be developing into a "Lost Dungeons of Norrath with a city as a home base" sort of game. And I can tell you, this isn't going to fly, because Everquest's Lost Dungeons of Norrath is already losing its appeal.
Part of the feeling of immerision in these games comes from being able to traverse a true game world, with interconnecting zones and cities and forests and deserts. Just having a city as a home base, then jumping into some instanced dungeon isn't going to be enough.
I do hope the developers change their minds, roll up their sleeves, and do the real job that has to be done: fleshing out the Forgotten Realms areas. Let players travel and see the beauty of these lands. Don't box them into instanced adventures, that's so contrived.
