The rise of Anarchy Online!

You can say a great deal of good things about Anarchy Online, but I do not feel it can muster up to "best of the genre". One of the best? Yes. But it has too many issues to rate there.

I played that game at beta/release and I have played it 3 more times since (reactivated my account a total of 3 times).

I thoroughly enjoy the implant system and quality levels for items. I love the missions, and I love the general atmosphere, even though I don't tend to care for sci-fi. I like being able to choose between missioning and camping (oldschool versus shadowlands). I like the professions, and the complexity of the game...I love the sense of tinkering and investigation about the various professions, which are in many ways very unique and diverse.

I do not like the feeling of emptiness and barren waste that the game has...which is not a question of zoning, but a question of player distribution: you can go for miles and see no one, and enter major cities to see only 20 or so players, though you know there hundreds online. I don't appreciate the treadmill, though that's not a specific gripe against AO's style of treadmill (which is, at least, slightly less aggrivating since new levels often do mean new equipment and implants).

I certainly put in on the "must play" list for people who want to know what is good in MMOG. But I rank it easily below EQ and UO which both have far more to offer.

Totally disagree with you 100%. I was an ARK in 2003 and we were very much a part of Customer Service with Anarchy Online.

We answered clients questions best we could, we provided technical difficulty, manu occasions we fixed things common to what GMs do, we strive for excellance, and we regularly inquired about our customer service skills through in game players during various times of the day.

ARKs are very much part of Customer Service.  Just because they are not paid does not make them a non-CSR

"But AO sucks...  Sandwich combat...  Repetitive character advancement, all that changes is a few numbers... repetitive equipment and items, again all that changes is numbers and quality label like "overtuned... Perfect etc",  Repetitive character classes, all that changes is the words that go with the numbers...  All it has going for it is the graphics and maybe audio.  Its a virtual chatroom oO"

Can't call AO a virtual chatroom any more then UO, AC, AC2, EQ, DAoC, Shadowbane, SWG, neocron, FFXI, etc. lol        Don't need to make false comments if your point is valid.

Repetitive character classes?  lol yeah... um ok...

Whoever was talking about killing hecklers all the time...  You must be one of those new players that joined after SL.    All of the players the whole 2 years before SL came out made it to lvl 200  in Rubi-Ka.

If you want to power lvl by killing hecklers  and be bored to death, its your own choice...

Most of the people leaving AO are all back withing 3 to 6 months    after they realize  how shitty other games are in comparison.      AO has so much more depth in character customization  that it  makes all other games you try feel so linear and limiting.

The little amount of downtime in AO makes other games feel like you are wasteing so much more time... spoils most AO players and makes other games a pain.

That is why you see so many players returning.     Its a revolving door.   They don't delete your accounts even after over a year, so it makes it easy for people to leave and come back.

People who havent played since the first year AO was out, need to come back and check it out with the features of Notum wars and SL  before makeing any comments.

I only have the original AO, so it means I have to buy the expansions to play right?

No, but will have to download alot of patches.      You can find Notum Wars and Shadowlands for under $5.00 each on Ebay and some game sites.    If you download the free trial and decide to stay after 7 days, you will be charges $29.99   which is basically $15 for notum wars + shadowlands, and $15 for the first month.    (or you can look at it as $29.99 for all AO, Notum wars, shadowlands and 30 free days) image
