I am looking for a MMO to play.  My wife loved the creature handler class from Star Wars Galaxies (Pre CU)  She wants to get back into a MMO but she really likes the classes that have pets (the more the better).  Can anyone recomend a MMO that has a creature handler style class along with decent, fun and entertaining gameplay?

thanks all who reply and those who did not just flame us

I'm not entirely sure what you mean with 'creature handler style'? I haven't played SWG pre-CU, so I don't really have that as a frame of reference.

Do you mean having a class that has a pet to control, telling it to attack, defend, whatever? If so, a few MMORPGs have those like World of Warcraft (Hunter, Warlock) and EverQuest II (Necromancer, Conjurer). If you mean having 'pets' that just follow you around, the aforementioned games also have those without any class restrictions. If you mean having house pets, in your own housing, EverQuest II has that.

But I probably am off with my interpretation of creature handler style here. :)

I'd recommend Word of Warcraft; as someone stated below there are two "pet" classes; the hunter who tames wild animals; there are 23 different species of animal to choose from and a variety of different visual styles within each species. Hunters also support their by shooting with a bow/gun as well as healing them directly. Hunters must also keep their pets fed; which puts an emphasis on the side interests of cooking/fishing. Additionally, hunters can "train" their pets with different attributes and skills (some of which they must obtain by hunting down rare animals, learning the skill from them and then teaching it to their other pet animals).

For more information on the hunter's pet system in WoW, check out petopia.brashendeavors.net/ It has a lot of information.

Warcraft also has the ability to collect non-combat pets; small things such as rabbits, parrots etc that just follow you around and can't attack/be attacked. There are tons of them and some are take a lot of time to get. This isn't limited to hunters, all classes can get non-combat pets. You can only have one combat and one non-combat pet active at the same time.

The second pet class is a warlock; an offensive spellcaster who can summon demons. Their pet system is much much less in-depth compared to hunters; warlocks just do one quest chain at certain levels to get their demons (there are 4-5) and buy their new skills from trainers.

I would recommend Hunter for your wife.

I just cancelled my WoW account this week, I was the proud hunter of a level 70 hunter and a couple of level 70 pets (can only use one at a time, mind you). End-game WoW with a hunter is...boring, to say the least. I would literally find something interesting on TV, tune in, then go into an instance/raid with my friends, and during the fights just spam 5 and 6 on the target 'til it died, then move on to the next, watching TV in between. WoW is awesome at first. The world, the story, the big feel, then at the end, it just got repetitive and pointless.

Just my $0.02, 9 million people will disagree with me (according to Blizz's numbers) /shrug.

I'd say give it a shot, WoTLK (next expansion) will probably be out by the time you and she get up to level 70 anyway.

I had exactly the same feeling with both my mage (pre-TBC) and warlock (post-TBC).

I don't think your problem was with the hunter class specifically, just the repetitive and unchallenging raid system in general. Still, the OP didn't mention that he and his wife were looking for a hardcore raiding game; and WoW still has a LOT of content to play with without raiding.

True, and plenty of people still get a kick out of the things I didn't enjoy. Who knows, maybe the X-pac will be different. I have a feeling I'll be back to make a DK.

I'm not sure there is any game out there with a pet system like pre cu swg´s. Most games have some sort of pet-class, where you can have a creature of some sort as an extra weapon. The only game i know where you can have more than one pet is City of Villains. As a mastermind in CoV you start with one pet, and can have at least 6 pets (zombies/soldiers/droids but no animals i´m afraid) at higher level. You can name them and make them preform emotes/say stuff (tricky but lots of fun). Se if there is a free trail somewhere, or send me a pm and i can try to send free trail-keys for you and your wife.

Snipan has a decent idea there.  The Mastermind has 6 pets at level 26, although the dark mastery secondary gives another pet at 38.  So if pets are your thing, then CoV is the way to go..  minor word though pet control is important in teams or you will wind up pissing your teammates off when your pets block doors or agro stuff.

Thanks for all the posts so far.

Yes Snipan i am looking for a mmo with pets like you said.  We have played WOW for several years and are looking for something new (or atleast until TrueGalaxies starts up)

    Anyone else have any ideas?

I would recommend Red Stone as a game to try out. Its free to play with an optional item-mall (of course).  I recommend it because it has a tamer / summoner class which  the tamer can tame up to 2 pets of all different kinds and the summoner can also summon 2 pets at a time out of 4 different summons. Also there is a necromancer class which can have 1 undead pet but thats about it . www.playredstone.com if intrested.
