Hey I am a UO classic player and I was wondering if there were any players from UO in these forums that could recommend a new MMO for me. I have been out for quiet a while and I was wondering if any games appealed to the old UO crowd...(before they ya know completely trashed the game....) thanks.

Many of the classic UO players have been hanging out on the Mortal Online forums http://www.mortalonline.com/
Mortal online is a newer mmo that is just like classic UO and it has a 2009 release date. Some classic UO players have been also hanging out on the Darkfall online forums, another mmo like classic UO, although Darkfall online has been in the works since the dawn of man... so screw Darkfall online.
I am from the UO generation, started UO around beta 2 and played for a couple years. I am currently playing Lord of the Rings Online. It is a really fun game, it is polished, graphics are by far the best you can get in an MMO currently. Gameplay is great, crafting is pretty good, not great but it's still good.
But if you are looking for a skill based system like UO, like the second post says, MortalOnline is what you are waiting for.. me as well, but it won't be out for almost 2 years.
try the LOTRO free trial, it's very good.

There are other skill based mmo's just like UO with 2009 release dates also. You have Fallen Earth and Earthrise. Mortal has a 2009 release date. Lord of the Rings online is far... light years away from even being close to classic UO. LOTRO has no real PvP, well its arena based and no player looting.
Also forgot to say that many of the classic UO players are playing Shadowbane. Shadowbane is a total open PvP mmo with 0 restrictions. Shadowbane has full player looting and guilds war eachother by taking down eachothers guild made castles in siege wars. SB is also 100% free to play and download, its first few years was pay to play.

Just F.Y.I. we can assume the OP likes PvP but since he didn't state it not all players from old UO liked PvP (me for one).....

And thats why todays UO is an item based, gear based no skill pile of dung. Its people like you that destroyed classic UO with your tears to EA games. With a new group of PvP mmo's in the works, Earthrise, Darkfall, Mortal and Fallen Earth.... the makers of these games wont listen to people like you. They are making these games in the likes of classic UO and will not change them for lolipops that shed tears.
It reminds me of those people that ate so much fast food, became fat pigs and then wanted to sue the fast food chain. Thats what it will be like if any of you moes play one of these new mmo's and then get mad if you die and get looted. So and F.Y.I. Gobble these if you may.
honestly I've been looking around for years for a new uo like mmo. Thats the one bad thing about having played uo years ago most mmo's now seem sort of lackluster in comparison. I've been trying to hold on with my pkers in fel and a blue in tram but I gave up once reborn came out and all my characters got nerfed again and my reds got even more nerfed. Its completely ridiculous the only pvp left is like 10-30 of the same people and like 20 noob dicks hanging out in fel gates and every once in a while a fight at some big ass guild's guild house like hot or lnr (on Atlantic). I can't wait for those mmos in 2009 i swear since i quit uo i have just been trying out other mmos for a couple months then giving up on them none of them compare at all they seem like EQ clones. ie fight 50 of thesee collect 20 of these and get an item anfd 5 percent experience . they lack real community, fun,and have cookie cutter characters. not that im dissing eq but almost no variety in mmos right now and not enough tactics or talent required although uo doesnt need as much anymore just run a couple hacking programs(btw every pvper uses speeder now without exception just to make it equal so you and ur ethy dont hget outran by a guy on foot) and ebay and all you need to do is run around and they fight for you.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
Classic UO is my idea of MMORPG Perfection and right now I am getting excited about AoC. Now unfortunately it lacks many many of the things that made UO great, but it is the closest that a "Big Name" MMORPG has come in a long time. Namely this is due to FFA PvP Servers where anyone can attack anyone outside of cities, all human races, and the lack of any kind of faction system. There is even a remote possibility of open-looting, but again, it is not likely.
Shadowbane was very similar, and Star Wars Galaxies would have been great if not for the lack of a FFA PvP Server. However both of those games went belly-up pretty quickly.
I won't argue AoC is going to be anywhere near the perfection of UO, but it is worth a try.
Haven't played UO once, but Darkfall seems to be what you want. Will be released..... oneday.
Want a taste of religion? Lick a witch.
Mortal Online may be our only hope, unless EA gets their heads out their asses and just makes a few classic servers.
1. Mortal Online
2. Darkfall
3. Warhammer
None of these are out as of yet though. WAR will be out in Fall of '08 and appears to be very solid, however, it's not quite your hardcore, oldschool MMO like UO was. Darkfall is getting to be very dicy in the sense that we don't even know if it exists at this point and if it does, we don't know that they are actually going to be able to deliver on their early promises. MO looks to be AMAZING! However, there is very little evidence of its current state and I for one would not put very much faith into a 2009 release. If it truley is in the making and will eventually release it promises to be a great MMORPG for us who want something other than the cookie cutter quest MMOs.
Mortal Online is first person view, isn't it? That's going to make it feel quite a bit different in the PvP. It's going to function like a FPS, if I understand it right.
Once upon a time....
I really cant recommend anything thats similiar to UO. I heard EVE was close but I cant back those claims up because I have never played it. Good luck

Total BS! I didn't much like the pvp in UO. I know many at the time that didn't. But it was part of the game. We accepted it as such and simply avoided getting ganked when we could. And when ganked...NOT once did I or any of my friends complain to a GM or anyone else! To say that because of those who don't much like PvP destroyed the game is idiocy. Why don't we say cause of your constant ganking newbies that hurt the game. What newbie wants to join a game when they get ganked every time they leave the city? So what happens? They go off to EQ. So there...it is the gankers fault that UO is the steamy pile of poo it is now. If you woulda left the newbies alone to get some time n skill under their belt....
UO devs prolly looked at EQ n saw it was getting more subs, saw it was not a gankfest n changed more because they wanted more subs.
Check out the forums at uo.stratics.com. People are still crying and raising hell after all these years. I guess some people are never satisfied.
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
People are always crying and complaining. Lets face it, no game makes everybody happy all of the time. It's just not possible. What's really wrong with it all is that every game tries to make as many players as possible happy. In doing so, they mix and mash various play styles to the effect of messing up the game for all play styles.
It's hard to blame the companies for doing it, though. There's allot of money involved. But I think we're more than ready for some open PvP/sandbox games. Just to round out the table, so to speak.
At least I know I'm ready (have been all along). I'm tired of these games with all their fake feeling rules.
*You can attack this but not that,
*you won't suffer loss on death,
*you can't take that,
*you can't touch that,
*you can't do this,
*nor that,
*nor the other thing,
*you can't feel anything like emotions,
*you can't know the thrill of victory, nor the agony of defeat,
*and no, this game can't have a life of it's own.
Once upon a time....
Also a lifetime lotr fan. Played UO from the beginning for the first 3 years. Miss the early days alot and have a brother that's still in UO after all these years (but he's playing lotr also). Hope that helps.
Personally there are no mmorpgs released yet similiar to UO. You can wait for Darkfall or Mortal online.
i am playing Vanguard currently because of the huge world and stunning graphics while waiting for either ot these 2 games releases.
