The thing is RP-PVP will or will not work pretty much depend son Funcom's GMs. If they actually will enforce the ruleset, take care to warn the ooc'ers and force name changes, eventually banning/transfering people away it will work. I played on RP-PvP servers in WoW. Yest. It was hell with all the OOC gankers that just rolled for 'lol ez-mode killz lololol' but doesnt change the fact that also it offered way more of fun. Why one cant be both dedicated RPer and PvPer according to You ? How does enjoying RPing makes me retarded in PvP same time, uh? Ofcourse one could always try to find RP on PvP dedicated servers without specific RP ruleset but its much more effort to find people there that wont be named "Imconnan" "Pwnerz" "Ieatu" etc. that feel a need to add "lol", ":)))))" and use broken interwebs english like "hi m8 cn u hlap me wit a qeust?!?". Majority of players who decide to roll on PvP-RP servers are ones that do understand the ruleset and even if they dont actively roleplay they understabd the rules and usually avoid acting like jerks. Dont like it. Roll on non-Rp. Why you bother yourself with it ?
Sorry if it came out like that.
I am not saying PVP players can not roleplay. But some of them do not care about RP at all.
What i am saying is that PVP-RP server will attract L337 k1d5 , in search of easy g4nk.
Funcom will have no power to moderate , or stop it.
Lol, when was the last time some of you chaps read some Robert E. Howard?
Even the most anti-social and sociopathic ganker can RP in pvp. In fact, it's one of the rare games where being a being complete git is in RP character. Even "noble" Conan himself was a first class ganker during his pirating and raiding years.
Reason for ganking and killing? "Where is my motivation?" delivered in my best upper-class thespien accent. Well in Howard's books it can range from financial and political gain to downright cruelty and drunken rage.
I will do some ganking in RP and non-RP servers. The only difference is that in RP I will brain you in the name of Set and the Old Ones.
From my experience in MMOS (Namely WoW in this case) with RPPVP servers, the servers do in fact 'work'.
Of course, Roleplaying is not enforced or mandatory, and in most case people dont do it, but it is still a flavor to the server. Often times youll find people roleplaying with one another, or if not that they'll speak in a more formal manner or they'll arrange guild meetings and not talk about their personal real lives.
I played mostly on an RP-PVP server in WoW, and it was a genuinely good experience. The people as a whole were more mature, and the tiny dash of roleplaying actually helped to liven the realism and world up that much more. RP-PvP doesn't attract the l33t gankers, it attracts those who simply like to PvP and RP as well.
I don't know of anybody who picks a server with the intention of hopefully getting the most easy kills. If people want to PvP and gank, they'll go to a PvP server with plenty of other gankers so they get action - they don't target RP-PVP servers for easier kills like some kind of virus.
From my past experiences with MMORPGs, pvp servers in general tend to attract immature, disrespectful people (Many who are kids or are those who have yet to outgrow that high school mentality). PVP-RP may be a somewhat different animal, it still draws that same crowd BUT it seems to get less of it thankfully. I am interested in seeing what kind of people Conan draws to it and stick with it.
If I ganked you... hard... the cheapest, most low-down, thoughtless, cruel gank ever delivered before death itself, and then turned around and in perfect Conan character delivered a soliloquy about why you should have died and how I did the world a justice by skinning your mortal coil, would you I fit your RP-Retarded category of PvPers?
Besides the fact that the above question rivals sentences by Nathaniel Hawthorne in an unprecedented lack of brevity, I think you'll see that most of your statements are slightly skewed to start.
All I have to do to RP is play my character like I think he should be played; the way I want my toon to craft his own reality. If I like to play the puppet-master of a cold-blooded killer, then by god I'm pulling Oswald's strings whether Kennedy calls it a gank or not. To me its still RP. Most of those gankers who kill random people simply like to play mindless, bloodthirsty, anarchic murderers with a lust for battle. They feel that killing people is the best RP there is. There is nothing wrong with that. The funny thing is that in Conan, the land, by definition of the IP, IS populated by mindless, bloodthirsty, anarchic murderers; so anything other than an RP-PvP server would seem out of place to me.
((I cannot speak to people who turn around and say "HAH TAKE THAT FUGNOT NUBZ! I PWNZD U!!!!!!11one1" - Ignore these infidels))
The ultimate solution to every problem: more space marines.
Pip pip. I believe you have summed up my own opinion here quite well.
It "could" work even better in a PvP enviorment, but as many have stated even yourself, It's up to the players..Always, even on a PVE RP server or enforced or not..
In a roleplaying game, realism is always a signum, and the "threat" to really get killed all the time adds to that realism in a sence..but again..Up to the players, really The best pvp roleplaying servers would ofcourse also have permadeath
I just hope that there will be a kind of safe spots to RP anyway. I accept the preference of people that say it fits to the game that you can be killed in.... about every single moment. But there are lots of people that don't just do the 'I'm Conan and I'll run around senselessly killing all and everything just to pass some time'-RP.
When I get killed out of situation then it's right but I just can't help myself worrying that each time when you have any kind of deep conversation or maybe a kind of flirt or anything like that somebody passes you and suddenly starts beating you up.
Again if that happens IC for some reason then ok but if it's over and over again without any real reason by people that aren't really involved in your RP then it's frustrating and would definately drive away RPs like me that enjoy having deep intense RP (not meant in a kinky way) that doesn't always end in slaughters.
To me, RP-PVP will mean making my way in this virtual world, while having to watch my back, be careful who I ally with, and be able to kill the morons who piss me off.
For example, those who play WoW or LOTRO will understand this scenario....
"Oh look! a gold vein! I'm going to go mine that! just have to get rid of that mob real quick...."
While killing said mob, some loser runs up and starts mining the node you're clearing....
Now in AOC, we simply finish off the mob, hack that node stealing maggot into bite-sized pieces, and claim the node for ourselves.
(fictional scenario, obviously...not saying there are "nodes" in AOC)
All I know is that, in WoW, PvP servers had more RP than RP servers on PRINCIPLE. On a PvP server people really worked hard to stand by their faction, to repel invaders, to protect their weak. Large armies would gather to attack and defend cities...all the while with cries of "For the Horde!" echoing in teh background. My own hunter used to carry around a handful of severed Night Elf heads in his back as testament to the fact I hated them.
I mean HATED. When you level on a PvP server, the attacks from the opposite faction train you to literally hate them...just as the Horde would hate the alliance in the RTS. For the same reasons, even. You get to the point where simply seeing the races that used to gank you sends you into a bloodthirsty rage until you're standing over each of their corpses in triumph. For Everquest, maybe thats not 'good' RP. But for universes like Warcraft and Conan, where blood soaked fields and decade long blood feuds are the norm...its the ONLY RP true the the IP.
I venture to say that if you remove the PvP from the mix, you destroy the immersion FOR RP, because Conan would never request a duel before removing the curs head from its shoulders. There can be no true RP in war torn universes without open PvP.
Personally i think that Lore wise a RP-Pve server does not fit the Conan Lore. Look alone at Conan himself he was not quite a friendly fellow? The normal PVE server is already a cookie for those who dont like or do not know the Conan lore. Its a dark world and thus the game should be as dark and babaric.
Surely people will say those who want merely to grind monsters and don't care about PVP but here they are the ones that fail the lore.
And Rp-PvP can work quite well, as it stands will RP server promote Guilds who have to work together more as the loose based normal server. If someone attacks someone else and hes in a guild retribution will follow and there will surely be guilds that will be "good" and hunt those griefers.
(Note:Ganking is not griefing)

It is a mistake to make only RP-PVP server

You are sorely mistaken.
WoW has many RP-PVP servers, where RP is enforced (allegedly), and most of them are at full capacity.
In my days of DAoC, there was plenty of well-played RP-PVP. Some of the best, most fun RPers I've met are PvPers.
You really should get a clue before making such blanket, stereotypical statements like that.
