Kassiem OPENmeans open to all not to only those that pay a fee to buy a lame subscripion so you can check out the game, it has nothing to do with free. Its nothing but a marketing scam to build hype and make a few extra dollars before release. and some folks are to stupid to relaize it
I would imagine - and here's a revolutionary thought - that all that bandwidth and whatnot cost fileplanet some money...
So while it may not have cost the full $5 (including admin, overheads, all that other nice stuff) you have paid for the service - which is a service that offers you other goodies in the future - it's not that bad really, is it?
Don't like it? Don't pay for it then.
Personally, I am delighted that so many other people will test this game for me over the
next few weeks to help me enjoy as bug free an experience as possible.
But I hardly think the price of a pint of beer for something a lot of people want to do a massive swindle.
i agree with what a few posters typed. paying for open beta is assnine. this whole event reeks of world of warcraft tactics, making to much money? here is another way we can make more, pathetic.
Tell you what then , you go take advantage of the much better deals everyone else in the world is offering you for your enjoyment. I hear you can listen to the sound of paint dry for absolutely free.
Meanwhile I will enjoy this, which is find to be unparalleled in terms of $/hour entertainment.
But I hardly think the price of a pint of beer for something a lot of people want to do a massive swindle
Its hardly just the price of a beer , you have on average 50k x $5 plus the $5 on the 17th of may to keep playing before release. thats half a million dollars more or less and just a bit more then the price of a pint of beer
Kassiem OPENmeans open to all not to only those that pay a fee to buy a lame subscripion so you can check out the game, it has nothing to do with free. Its nothing but a marketing scam to build hype and make a few extra dollars before release. and some folks are to stupid to relaize it
Well, I DO realize it, hate it, and pay nonetheless, because there is a matter of facts. Things are as they are, you wanna see beta you have to pay, so its take it or leave it. I dont like it, but my boredom and the good Euro VS Dollar change finally won. Its that easy.

Open beta means it is open to an selected community, with in most cases is everyone. However this could also be the Fileplanet community. Look people if you want to debate about things atleast try to do some investigating. It took me about 30 seconds to find out the definition of open beta and what FP and Funcom are doing does fall under this definition.
Debating whatever it is an "beta" or not would be more suitable, I do believe it's more of an marketing tactic (Not an scam at all, they do not offer you anything they can not deliver) then an beta, although the data they gain from this would be vital especialy conserning the capacity of the servers.
Also this beta is intended for fileplanet subscribers and not for everyone. It simply something FP does for there subscribers pretty often. True they do get more subscribers this way and make some money out of it, however this is not there intent. Offering beta's (AoC is not special in this regard at all) is an way for them to keep people subscribed, same with the fast downloading and other offers from the IGN websites.
However back to the initial post from the OP. My download speed on fileplanet is extreamly fast. I live in the Netherlands and I get max speed on the UK server, but I still get 1mb/s on the US servers.

i agree it's a marketing tactic, but it is not a scam. This is not the first nor last time this will happen, people just need to get over it.
Besides you are paying fileplanet, not funcom, yes fileplanet probably payed funcom for the exclusive rights to host the open beta, and fileplanet will gain money for the subs they got because of it. But afterall everything now a days is a business, and a business is there to make money. The only thing i disagree with about they way the "open beta" is being handle is they just needed to call it something different maybe "pre release beta" instead after all it is not a god given right to have a open beta whether it's free or not.
edit: oh and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh
I had too buy 2 of them stop criyng! If you dont have the money for it just fukin wait till the 17th k thxs sick of ppl crying about fileplanet.
LOL crying what a joke if people dont stand up to this sort of BS from Funcom, SOE , Turbine and a host of other companies it will become the norm and not the exception .. or would you rather have to pay to beta anything in the future and im not just talking about an open beta, I mean from alpha on . its in the air and these corps dont care about you , your loyitality or anything but the bottom line and getting your services for free .. its lame

WRONG ... Open beta refers to the status of NDA. An open beta is one where the NDA is lifted. It has nothing to do with how free it is or that it is open to everyone or any other childish ideas. You do not have a right to get into an open beta. And you call other people stupid? LOL
I agree fully with the original poster. I was going to start a topic on this subject but it seems he beat me to it.
If you are going to be paying 5 dollars a month for downloads then what the hell are you paying for when they're 50 kb/s? I'm reading some of the arguments against this...
"When 100,000 people are downloading this at the same time it's going to make this a slower process"
that really isn't an excuse if you are actually paying to download something. Make more servers, when more people are paying you should have enough money to get more servers. If you are paying you should be able to get the max your bandwidth can take, not at a speed so ridiculously slow I'd be better off finding the download someplace else. That is just pathetic on their part.
The truth is the people at fileplanet, like gamespot, did not prepare enough servers for the download, and resulted in another bad choice by FC. It could prove a good marketing tool to both companies if they actually prepared, but all this did was prove to me not to EVER pay for a fileplanet subscription if I can just find better download resources on the first link in google.
I did not pay for my open beta key. I was planning to wait on release to play but entered three different open beta offerings going on (one here at MMORPG.com, one that took place at tentonhammer, and another, but I forget the site's name) and by pure luck won one of the 100 fileplanet subs at tentonhammer. My downloading speeds were 150 kb/s... and by the time I figured out that Funcom made another downloader for the open beta too (like they did for the PvP weekend) my fileplanet download was halfway so I decided to just let it finish overnight.
yeah dude pick another download server....i got all 12 gigs in 2 hours....it was FAST !!...so fast i looked around fileplanet to see if i wanted to download anything else....but...NOPE they dont offer jack i need lol
Wow, a lot of people throwing tamper tantrums over the fact that fp people get a chance at a key before others. Holy crap, I would be totally surprised that whiny people are that silly where it not for the fact that every single mmo launch in recent years has done the same thing.
Seriously.. paying a FP subscription has nothing to do with open betas and paying for OB's. Paying FP is for better access to more files with better download servers. Most of you would not be able to pay for a day of fileplanet's internet bill with a years worth of your income, most likely.. how can you whine that they in turn want to pass that cost down to its subscribers? Internet is not free. For anyone. Someone somewhere always has to pay for the bandwidth. Not to mention the hosting costs, colocation costs, technical hands cost, etc etc.
Open Beta does not mean 'free for all public access'. It means.. well whatever the company hosting it wants it to mean, but in most cases it just means opening the door to thousands of users, instead of closed to only a few hundred. The specifics are up to the company.. and they owe nothing at all to any of you. They are providing you with a free service in exchange for the testing part that some of teh betatesters actually do.
For those who get in thrusday.. have fun.. for the rest, quit cryin you wankers.
Well, download speeds have been slower and I've noticed a bit buggy(any time I restarted the download, it would literally restart the entire download from scratch EEP!) However, I'm greatful I was able to get a key and will get the chance to take part in the OB which is what I paid for anyway. Of course, my FP sub will be getting the big cancel button soon as its really not worth it(I don't even use FP anymore anyways since most videos stream pretty decently over the net and torrents are great places to get your demos/updates).
the OP disgusts me. Be happy you even GOT a key, there are plenty of us who, for whatever reason can't/won't pay fileplanet for a beta that are hoping to be one of the 100 chosen in the MMORPG contest. You have a key, and you STILL complain? YOu can't even play till may 1st, so wha'ts the rush? that's just ridiculous. Be happy you have a key at all and quit whining.
I had to let me PC stay on for 3 whole days to download that beta, i didnt get higher than 100kb/s, and i know alot of ppl where downloading the beta but on the other side i think they should had opened even more servers because downloading 12,5GB's with a download speed of 100kb is no fun at all .
Btw: I live in The Netherlands wich is Europe too .
And i wouldnt recommend subscribing to Fileplanet if you live anywhere else except the US/Canada, since you cant make any profit out of it, like getting a free magazine subscription wich are for US/Canada only.

No problems for me downloading at 500-700k/sec. Are you using their download manager? and have it set correctly?

wonder how much it costs FP for each gb downloaded from them... 12.5gbs multiplied by all those keys must be a lot of data.

Slowest I've ever downloaded from FilePlanet as a paying customer, is around 200 kB/s. I always use the UK-servers.
I downloaded the AoC install pack around 550-600 kB/s. But I did this the minute they released the file.
[b}Wow! Much gold. So amaze!
And like always I'am exteremly lucky. My downoad speed is 20-90kb/sec *sighs* still 120h to go
-.-
not sure why, when i downloaded last thursday night, i was getting about 700kb/sec.
50k keys * 12gb each = 600,000,000gb
I'm sure FP has a datacenter with a direct pipeline but still this has to cost.
