hey jimmy. new poll from NY, where i live. 86% think he should resign. all of them sheep, right? or is it sheeple?
Well that certainly doesn't disprove anything I said post #26.
If the people want him out then he's out and that's the way democracy should work.
I personally could care less about the whole ordeal since I don't live in New York. I just get really tired of hearing the same moral soapboxing by people that only want to feel smug about themselves. I also truly think that prostitution should be made legal as I stated in my first post to this thread.
And before you start labeling me "liberal" or "right wingnut," I would like to point out that this doesn't have a damn thing to do with sides. Reality is messy and way more complex than our third-person blanket allegations suggest. We don't know the entire story here. All we know is:
1) Spitzer tried to acquire the services of a prostitute from out of state.
2) Prostitution is illegal in New York.
That's it. That's the extent of our knowledge here. We don't know if Spitzer's wife knew about this whole thing. We don't know the condition or terms of his marriage. We don't even know anything about the hooker that he was planning on doing business with or those that were arranging the deal.
It's always easy to pass judgment. What's hard is reserving judgment until you have ALL of the facts.
So you believe you know what I want better than I know what I want? You'd make a good politician. Plus, your... open stance on ethical behavior would really emphasize the common beliefs you hold with the political elite.
On the off-hand chance that I really do know what I want better than anyone else, I stand by what I said earlier, without the "radical" part: just merely honest would be nice.
BTW: I *do* know that my view isn't the only view, and frequently say as much. So, putting words in my mouth as well as thinking I know what I want better than I know myself: yes, a perfect politician.
I'm still trying to figure out where I acted "outraged", but I guess you and reality aren't good friends so I'll leave that one alone.
he compromised his position of power. a high ranking state official involved in a scandal such as this opens himself up to blackmail. ever see the movie 'the godfather' ? this guy should immediately be made an example of. anyone who does something like this should be. yet you wave your liberal flags. or divert attention from the democrat party as oldlady did. nice try.
If prostitution was legal in the US, like it is in most of the rest of the world, blackmail wouldn't be an issue. They make the same argument about gays in the military. And the answer is pretty much the same.
Although, to clarify my position on the gays in the military thing, there are other reasons why allowing people to be openly gay in the military is a bad idea. The biggest being that there is a very strong culture of hatred toward gays both in the US and in the United States military. This isn't something that can just be "educated" away since it goes to the very heart of how American's define masculinity. Military leadership is hard enough without having to babysit certain people to make sure they don't deliberately get killed by their co-workers.
I know that's not right, but you have to work with reality and not some ideal when you make policy.
And why do American's define masculinity as being "non-gay"? I know why. Because that stereotype is allowed to be perpetuated.
Look, everyone knows that there are some dang tough gay guys. Even historically some of the greatest commanders of all time were homosexuals. So, the quicker we do things to prove this stereotype of gay guys are weak the sooner we can start looking at things realistically.
I knew gay people in the military. They were fine soldiers. And honestly, nobody gave a damn about them being there. It's always a couple of stupid f*cks that make a big deal out of it and get all the publicity and attention. And the funny thing is, the people making a big deal about the gays being there are usually horrible soldiers themselves.

I'm actually rather pragmatic in my ethical views. the "invisible hand" that Adam Smith spoke of had to do with the fact that we are limited in our ability to victimize others by our inability to avoid being victimized ourselves. If you over-reach your personal power, someone will probably chop off your arm.
This creates a balancing effect, but never quite complete stability. I would be happy with a utilitarian ethic, the most happiness for the most people, but that involves giving people the freedom to choose what they want to do with their bodies and minds. Not exactly an American value. Especially if you use this thread as measure.

Whoa, how did gays get brought into this thread? This is not a homosexual scandal, it's a prostitution scandal. I mean that alone is already juicy enough. Let's stay on topic people.
It is so funny reading some of the post. Clearly some of you do not know the soon to be ex-NY governors history. He was attorney general and use to bust prostitution rings and stuff. That is how he got the nickname "Mr. Clean". It is what he ran on to become the governor of NY. Now it turns out he wasn't so clean. Those very girls and madame's he use to bust he use to frequent them for their services...6 years worth of services totalling over 80K in fees. So here is a case of a guy saying don't do as I do but do as I say. He abused his power and his authority to make life miserable for many businesses. He ruined whole peoples lives to get to the governorship and he did all while he was making use of the illegal services.
The question now is...did he use any tax payers money to fly to such locations as Florida and such to meet up with the girls in question.
There are other things he did like jeopardize his position of authority and he could have easily been blackmailed by any number of groups of people for any number of things - which leads to such things as corruption in the government....or contracts given to certain individuals or companies...all kinds of stuff.
OMG if some of you people only knew what people make use of escorts. Those oh-so-clean businessmen/women and politicians...all over the world aren't so clean as they appear and they have the money and the means. 5g's for an hour worth of sex is nothing! LOL!
It's stupid that prostitution is illegal. I've never used one but the way women are, and if I weren't so good looking, (heh) i'd probably be a regular myself.
Hope you got your things together. Hope you are quite prepared to die. Looks like we're in for nasty weather. ... There's a bad moon on the rise.

He ruined whole peoples lives to get to the governorship and he did all while he was making use of the illegal services. Now that's interesting. I have no problem blasting someone fro being a complete hypocrite. I have no problem with blasting someone for using their authority to intimidate others. I have not problem blasting someone for being overly ruthless while pursuing power. My problem is with jumping on prostitution the sole indicator of an individual's moral compass. In fact, I have a problem with people that believe that paying money for a prostitutes services is immoral in and of itself. It's asinine to prohibit the sale of something that you can give away for free. The question now is...did he use any tax payers money to fly to such locations as Florida and such to meet up with the girls in question. This is a sticky problem. Let's say the you're on a business trip and you have to stay overnight because the next flight home is in the morning. You've finished your meeting and you're basically stuck at the hotel until your flight so you go pick up a hooker. You pay for the time with your own money, but could it be argued that you used company money to pick up a hooker? See what I mean? There are other things he did like jeopardize his position of authority and he could have easily been blackmailed by any number of groups of people for any number of things - which leads to such things as corruption in the government....or contracts given to certain individuals or companies...all kinds of stuff. I already addressed this one once, but I'll say it again: If prostitution were legal, blackmail wouldn't have been an issue. Given Spitzer's moral grandstanding however, it might still have been in just this one case. OMG if some of you people only knew what people make use of escorts. Those oh-so-clean businessmen/women and politicians...all over the world aren't so clean as they appear and they have the money and the means. 5g's for an hour worth of sex is nothing! LOL! Right... Because all men are rapist, child molestors and woman beaters.... And we all know that it's only men that frequent prostitutes and strippers. Never mind that all male brothel in South Africa that caters to women. Never mind the fact that women can find male strippers in just about any major city on any given night. Some of my wife's "no man having" friends go off to see male strippers every damn weekend and come back the videos and stories that you wouldn't believe! These guys host "lock downs" and "champagne rooms" just like their female counterparts. Funny thing is, no one thinks about these men as being slaves or exploited...
Yes, there are sleazy men that frequent prostitutes. There are also regular guys that frequent prostitutes. Putting them all in the same category is fuckin' retarded.
it appears that spitzer himself agree he betrayed us new yorkers and the democratic establishment. it also appears he has slightly more moral compass than you. your type is also the reason for the coming apocalypse, according to some christians. when society as a whole takes your view, all is lost.
well jimmy. it appears that spitzer himself agree he betrayed us new yorkers and the democratic establishment. it also appears he has slightly more moral compass than you. your type is also the reason for the coming apocalypse, according to some christians. when society as a whole takes your view, all is lost.
So your rebuttal is that Spitzer admits to being a hypocrite, a fact that doesn't change my arguments in favor of legal prostitution one wit, and that... God's going to kill us all.... because.... I think prostitution should be legal....
oh is that your stance now? i thought it was spitzer shouldnt have to step down. he should have to step down for breaking a law, as a politician. who cares if you think it should be legal or not.
In light of Spitzer's past moral crusading, I think that he should be called to task on his hypocrisy. Had it just been a case of prostitution alone, I wouldn't care.
That's the advantage of being a free thinking individual rather than a religious drone. I have the freedom to clarify, refine, and change my mind on an issue as I receive new information. I'm not confined to sticking by knee-jerk reactions based on nothing but faith. I'm also not confined to "staying the course" when it's clear that the course leads right over a cliff.
Given, I do have to take more responsibility for my ethics. I can't just use "because God said so" and leave it at that. I have to support my moral choices with logic, reason and facts.
When it comes to prostitution, the only reason it's dangerous and exploitative is because it's illegal.
1) If prostitution was legal, the women that do this work would have the right to police protection from being assaulted either by their employers or clients.
2) If prostitution was legal, sex workers would actually keep more of the money that they make.
3) If prostitution were legal, it could be regulated in much the same way as tobacco and alcohol. Mandatory periodical STD testing and records could actually help prevent disease that is spread through unregulated prostitution.
4) If prostitution were legal, it would cut down on the amount of minors engaged in prostitution since we could now demand that the owners of brothels maintain records about their employees with full transparency.
And the list goes on and on.
Again, I don't fault anyone for just being human. I do fault people for blatant dishonesty, which seems to be the case here. Although I'm open to the possibility that something else may come up that will turn that on conclusion on its head as well.
I reserve my judgment until I have all the facts. My problem is with people, such as yourself, that don't care about the facts and only want to pontificate or pander for one side or the other.
Investigators now know the real identity of the call girl "Kristen". She has been subpoena'd to appear before a Congressional Committee, and meet with Committee members individually to demonstrate the services she performed for the New York governor. One Committee member was quoted as saying, "It's a helluva tough job, but somebody's got to do it".

LMAO!
I assume CNN will broadcast this too, otherwise we can't possible fathom the depravity of this senator.
but why did this guy run for governor of NY if he is into this sort of thing for christ sake it is legal in nevada?
98% of the teenage population does or has tried smoking pot. If you''re one of the 2% who hasn''t, copy & paste this in your signature.
i have no allegiance to catholicism jimmy, other than my wife takes my son every sunday to church so he can make his holy communion this april.
just because other countries have legal ho's, doesnt mean america should, or should not.
personally, legal ho's is not the direction we should take humanity in. looking at the bigger picture, that is. but hey, why should i care of the enviroment or society i raise my children in? you've got all my moral choices lined up for me and, just because someones God may have interjected a disdain for legal ho's or killing of fetus' , by default, according to you, it should be accepted. after all, followers of a religion are all closed minded, right?

Oh, the committee member quoted was Nancy Pelosi. Who'd a thunk it, she swings both ways!
And all you thought that just Dawn Wells was one foxy old lady......
i have no allegiance to catholicism jimmy, other than my wife takes my son every sunday to church so he can make his holy communion this april. just because other countries have legal ho's, doesnt mean america should, or should not. I made the case for legal prostitution based on my ethical assessment of the current policy, not on whether other countries have legal prostitution or not. personally, legal ho's is not the direction we should take humanity in. Remember this line, it's about to bite you in the ass. looking at the bigger picture, that is. but hey, why should i care of the enviroment or society i raise my children in? you've got all my moral choices lined up for me and, just because someones God may have interjected a disdain for legal ho's or killing of fetus' , by default, according to you, it should be accepted. after all, followers of a religion are all closed minded, right?
Let's take this one step at a time...
Making prostitution legal does not make it mandatory. Currently, it's legal for adults over the age of 21 to go have a beer if they want. I choose not to drink. Legalizing Prostitution allows each person to choose whether or not to engage in that activity. If you don't like prostitution, don't hire a prostitute.
I find it amusing that you seem to think that I'm forcing my morality on you when you're the one making bold statements about what "direction we should take humanity." I have an idea, why not let humanity decide what direction it wants to travel in?
Something isn't automatically right because religion proscribes it. Likewise, something isn't automatically wrong because religion proscribes it. The ethical "rightness" or "wrongness" of an action needs to be established by rational and logical arguments and not simply "because God said so."

There is very little sympathy for the now ex-governor Spitzer. He built his political career by destroying the careers of others, even those who didn't break any laws. As New York's Attorney General, he could use the power of his office to trump up charges against those he didn't like. According to what I've read, he was one of the most arrogant men you could ever meet. I don't have a whole lot of sympathy for him either. But I feel very sorry for his wife and children.
It's sad that a woman, Deborah Palfrey, is dead because Washington elite made use of her "illegal" services. They are the criminals as far as I am concerned and worse, they are suppose to be held to a higher standard and they knew the services she was providing were "illegal". Now she is dead. Prostitution should be legalized for this very reason. It is a job that provides a service. I think maybe the names of some of the other people who used her services and services of "other" escort companies should release the names of the elite in Washington who make use of these services. It is time to bring down the hypocrites who continue to use those "illegal" services yet are the first to say, "Prostitution is against the law."
God it is like the pastors of these big churches preaching against homosexuality and yet they are out there behind their congregations backs screwing anything and everything.
If it's going to be legalized, then there must be a company. There should be no girls waiting on the street to get picked up. There must be a company that insures these girls are 'safe' before someone pays to have sex. Also, they must make sure that nothing bad happens while over the buyers house. If he is known as a dangerous man, then he shoudl not be able to pay for the woman.

and they turn the other cheek when something like this happens in their own party?
and BTW he wasn't paying the prostitutes for sex, he was paying them to leave afterwards amirite

LMAO!

And all you thought that just Dawn Wells was one foxy old lady......
her district is san francisco. of course she bats from both sides of the plate

The tree that doesn't bend, breaks in the wind.
Herrr... why blackmail on this? Too dirty to use this kind of strategy.
