There is no doubt that the world Hyboria is sexist, bloody, violent, etc. That is the way it was written. Much like John Carter.

On the other hand, the world of Conan also depicts women as the bravest and toughest of adventurers who need wear no more than a chainmail bikini to slay demons or to travel the world in nothing but a few strands of cloth.

You know, I created several avatars both male and female during the PVP test weekend.

I never noticed that the mens' faces were ugly.

I thought the female avatars were the hottest I'd ever seen in a game.

Overall I felt the character creation options were excellent for both genders.

Though I really hated to put pants on the female characters after they got off the boat.

as a female, i think the guys in the game look quite nice.. very gerard butler in 300 sort of rugged look. contrary to popular belief, male models arent what most women find appealing.

as far as the 'sexy' female demons - those are succubi, and succubi can only be female. :P

What makes you think that humankind has changed the last 15.000 years ? I think the biggest differences are that humans grow higher and have less bodyhair. And thats it. Nothing else has changed.

We have weak men and strong men, we have brutal men and men and womans with a hang to power. We have weak woman who are willing to submit for protection, we have amazons who are willing to fight for their independance. We have womans who are willing to fight with their female attributes as weapons and we have womans who would rather die then to use them.

So, what exactly makes the 21st different ?

We have Demonologists, but they only can summone female sexy-demons. No matter what gender or preferrence, there is always this women to safe in the beginning. There are only FEMALE prostitutes, and most important: why do female chars look good but male all like they fell head on into a lawn-mower? I mean the males have only 2 kind of faces: abysmally ugly, and just so far ok than you dont have to puke looking at them.
Oh and did they ever head the difference between a haircutter and a barber?
And dont even get me started about the male clothing! Why does even the cheapest harbour harlot wear golden silk and men wear all stuff looking like pulling on a potatoe sack?
I mean, seriously, the Conan world is not Armani male models-world, but why does it make such a difference between male and female characters? Is the only "good male" when he has a square body in sack-cloth and a face like punched too many times? I rly bemoan a BIT more diversity in all this. Its all QUITE old fashioned stereotypical and quite un-adult in that, I must admit. More like what I'd imagine a teenagers male dream world.

No, you're wrong. The female Demonologist summons a male demon.

The word your looking for is sexist and yes, the Conan world is very sexist. It mainly appeals to male audience as do most video games imo.

Which is sad really, considering over 50% of people who plays video games are female.  One day, a company will come and cater to women in a game other than Sims Online.  (may it rest in peace)

Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:

"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

Because its CONAN , if you just read 1 book or comic you would understand why its need to be like that.

Btw.  Conan is for mature players all others got  WoW and other child's games.

Yes, as sexism as the books of R.E. Howard are, so is the game. What did you expect of the game given that FunCom set out to create a game that holds true to the books?

I have been in a female heavy guild. My guildleader was female and all i can tell you from this experiance is that AOC is to softcore They do demand a bit more social skill then other players, but when they start to roleplay you probably will face a frist class pirate bitch. If you cant keep up with that you are pwnd LOL. And loot-wise... if they want something then you either raid with them till it drops or your life will be very misserable. The good news is, they think twice if they need the item. The only thing a mmo needs is choclate and cake to bribe them...

wow. It's amazing how much attention this game is getting. Hilarious.

Anyhow, like a person said in a previous post. Succubus is a female demon which can ONLy be female.

The male counterpart is called Incubus.

Those who call the game sexist. You've never ever read the comic or so right..?

It's all about the gore and women! I haven't gotten access to teh game. But i guess it's like that era should be.

Absolutely correct, the genre is set in a "medieval" land, and written in a time before "the burning of the bra".  It would be hypercritical of Funcom to say that they are trying to hold as close to the books as possible and then make the characters and their manerisms completely different to the stories.

One can either stick to the stories, or create ones own "interpretation" of the stories.  Which is what many movie producers and directors do.

I have no issues at all with sexism in the game I just wish as much care and attention would be put into male models and armours as is put into female ones.

Yes I am a woman and yes I want to play a sexy woman but I wouldn't mind so much getting to see some sexy men also, I want the men to look brute, to be strong, scarred barbarians but they can still look good despite that.  I notice the same issues in most games and it seems bizzare to me, if they are aiming for a male target audience then why not cater to this and actually supply good looking clothes and armour for males too as surely most men will -want- to play males anyway.

It mystifies me.  It really does.

Yeah, I know.. I was joking as well :)

My demon does this thing where he points his sword at someone and does this pelvic thrust thing... cracks me up every time I see it lol

So, Yeah.. definately NOT a politically correct game lol

Erm, he is NOT complaining about the IN-GAME LORE sexism. How many of you were too blind to see this?

Yea, wow, this isn't the 21st century. We have different values. But we're still in the 21st century when we enter the character select screen. And in Conan's world, every woman looking beautiful and every man looking rugged and battle-worn isn't sexist. Its ridiculous. The graphical appearance of men and women isn't something determined by lore. Its determined by the fact that they are HUMAN.

In short; Why are women in this setting more beautiful, and men less so, is his point. Am I right?

Although, a few points here -have- been useful, since the first post. Female demonologists DO get the male equivelant of a succubus, the incubus. (YES its an equivelant.. any demon lore will tell you that).

And there ARE male hookers (apparently). :p But why not have more female? Seriously. This DOES fit in with Conan lore; women as sexual objects.

Honestly, who cares?  The men are too ugly so you're having trouble getting off to other people's virtual avatars?  Go get an issue of Play Girl.

It's quite easy to make unattractive women in the character generator, and I think it's not that hard to make a handsome man.  But with the OPer running around the game world, I think I will stick with the ugly men, just to be the safe side.

while the male characters that are already made might be throw-up from the floor-up. AOC does allow you to design your own characters to your taste.

I don't really care, myself. I'm just shocked at the ignorance and lack of basic comprehension. But thanks for your immensely constructive comments.

As for making good/bad visuals, I woudln't know, its still denying us access to the buddy system. I'm just going by what he said.

I believe you have been brainwashed into believing anything showing males not dressed to look like women is wrong.  Anything not showing women to be in charge and leading is wrong.   That is due to popular culture brainwashing us today.

I have a one year old son and am surprised when I see all the cartoons have female leads and males usually used as comedic relief.   Many popular shows on television today are the same.   Consider Battlestar Galactica.   The strongest, most important, most skilled, smartest character is a female in Starbuck.

Race is the same, when mixed races shown typically the 'white guy' is the joke character while the 'smarter black guy or woman' is the hero.

Just need to open your eyes to the effect media has upon you.

I don't play AoC, but its simply an alternative to the typical brainwashing received by the masses.

  • wasniahCwasniahC Member Posts: 10

Men and women having many, free choices isn't something I have a problem with. Its just not in the lore of AoC. AoC lore looks upon women as inferior.

But.. men and women's choices shouldn't be completely different in AoC once you step outside something lore-dependant, though. Such as character creation. What part of lore says that all women in this setting are born with better.. features.. than men?
