I've never seen a tank that can cast devastating offensive spells. Like a wizard/fighter type. I always see the fighter/healer combo that have the weak offensive spells.
The shadow knight class in Everquest (and perhaps other games as well) was a warrior/necro hybrid and had some some formidable offensive spells.
hmm. dont this thaat would fly well in a MMO world. esp together with the "Lawyers" class, i keep picturing a world with similar mechanics as wow, some player died, you as mortician comes and pick up the body and start burying it, the player returns to corpse and res, the lawyers comes and sues your ass for buring someone that isnt dead.
Maybe a better question to begin with would be: what other archetype would you like to see? I think the standards we have might be Tanks, DPS, Healers, Buffers/Debuffers Classes generally fit into one of those categories, or are mix of two, sometimes three of them. What else do we need to do in game besides absorb damage, deal damage, heal the damage, and make others do less or more damage or take less or more damage? Whew! Different classes just do the above in a different way or to a different degree. For instance A tank might use armor or forcefields, but it's still performing the same role. Some classes might do DPS with a spells or with sharks with lazer beams, but they're still DPS.
As long as your game is about combat, I cannot see a different category than what you've listed.
Of course you can add out of combat spells to classes just for flavor, but that would only add texture to the game, not create new class concepts.

I wonder if a Seer class could be implemented. A class that can see the future and inform people of what will happen to avoid the outcome. In game, that could be done like Timeshift. So like, you're about to go attack a Dragon and the Seer looks forward at the outcome. As you're fighting it, the main tank goes down because the healer was distracted. Seer uses the futureseeing power to roll back time a few seconds so the healer can keep the tank on its feet and things continue onwards. Might be hard to implement, and the Seer would need some other powers to keep it interesting, but might be a cool class to play.
Whow, thats really a nice idea ! And AFAIK its the first class concept here that is both combatfocussed and hasnt been seen before.

What kind of "fantasy series" do you consume ? Its usually absolutely trivial to point out in stories who is what class. All you have to do is create a class system and look at the backgrounds of people.
For example, you could classify Lord of Rings into Mage, Fighter, Ranger, or Rogue:
Gandalf - Mage
Frodo - Rogue
Aragorn - Ranger
Gimli - Fighter
Saruman - Mage
etc
Or Star Wars into Jedi Fighter, Jedi Mage, Fighter, Rogue, or Diplomat:
Darth Vader - Jedi Fighter
Luke Skywalker - Jedi Fighter
Yoda - Jedi Mage
Palpatine - Jedi Mage
Han Solo - Rogue
Princess Leia - Diplomat
R2D2 - Rogue
C-3PO - Diplomat
etc
For thats what classes are, background and specialization. Its typical for people to specialize unless they really live alone on an island.
Centaurs, oh wait Second Life has these and they hang out at some weird places!
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
usally ive been against class structures in games since as a rouge u could go slaughtering tons of monters to lvl up and at top lvl u could go and pick the hardest lock in the world without even looking at a lock before.. thankfully EQ and later WoW changed that and its starting to be a bit acceptable.. but still..
But to build a skill based skill system is hard aswell, was a old pen and paper rpg here in sweden that did a good job doing it on paper at least, saw someone making into a game but it really lacked the puplicity and some ways they did the game just didnt make it fun playing, ei. the makers translated a lot of these enlish one-liners direcly to swedish ( without grammar correction or anything ) and with an not that commited actor doing the voice, together with that they just spammed it everytime u did anything just puts you off. but still a would love to see that game as a computergame again. game ( paper and computer version ) is called "Drakar och Demoner" and it was the old version 2 and "Expert" edition that made it into game. its up to version 7 or somthing atm.
Specific magic mage classes like pyromancer or at least the ability to specify a special kind of magic (you can in some games but you still have the other spells. You just get better with the kind of magic you choose like in World of Warcraft.)
Monk (In most modern MMORPGs there are no monks.)
Bowman (Like a warrior but they use bow instead. In most MMORPGs you have to be a 'Hunter' to use a bow.)
Assassin (Like a rogue but has different skills.)
A warrior/rogue class wich should have brutal abilities like a warrior but also more subtle rogue-like abilities. Like a more precision and finesse centered warrior class.
A warrior/mage class (should have both warrior abilities and magic abilities.)
Super classes (they need to be unlocked like the 'Hero Classes' in World of Warcraft except that they should be ALOT more powerful than the other classes so only the best could get them. They would probably be the leaders of guilds/player cities. Oh and of course they should have the coolest armour!)
Cool topic. Here's my take on the necromancer. I use it as more of a race or faction than a class, but it should still be applicable here.
The player's true avatar is a living bag of bones lying in a tomb somewhere, clutching his most precious artifacts, dreaming of the minions he dominates. He lets what life he has, and what magical essences support him, only slowly drain away, in an attempt for immortality.
The necromancer's first and most important creation, made when he was still moving about the world, is the undead servant that will work his crypt. This servant has dexterous hands and a good mental capacity, so that when the necromancer goes to lie in his tomb, he can use this servant to create more minions.
The player kind of alt-tabs in game to show which perspective his necro's conscious is focused on. Go to the actual avatar, and all you see is the blackness of the tomb, or maybe a tomb lid lit by some glowing artifact. So you switch over to your servant, and start making undead minions. Once you finish a new creation, you alt-tab into it's body, run it out of the crypt and down the hill, and start creating mischief.
As time goes on, your necro gets better at creating undead minions, you collect better pieces of material to make minions out of, and you collect artifacts to dump into your tomb. So the necro would be a pet class / crafter / adventurer.
Were Any Animal - This DPS class can change into any half man half best form. A little like the Bloody Roar game.
Adventurer - This DPS class can cast magic blasting attacks or can perform strong melee attacks, but can not heal and armor is not as good as a tank.
Ghoul Lord - Can take the form of a Human to not be spotted in town, but must change back into a Zombie to attack.
Beast Lord - Like EQ, but can tame any beast like WOW and can use multiple beast in when fighting. Each extra beast is weaker then the first summoned beast.
Shade - Can travel to or through any place or dungeon with out getting attacked in Ghost form. Can not Attack in Ghost form, but can heal like a priest out of Ghost form.
A God based MMO. Thor, Athena, Zeus,Kratos(from God of War hehe) etc. would all make good classes and has tons of lore to draw from.
hmm mabye not gods but something like the percy jackson books. Your a half blood and you pick which of the gods would be the parent you get powers from. Each god would have its advantages.
Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

u are able to pickpocket other players in UO.. not a class base game though.
tbh its a pain for everyone.

i thought nerco uses the dead corpse to take down his enemies e.g u killa mob with spells then cast on corpse to kill of otehr mobs
i will be this class in AOC cant wait but it might be hard to lvl due to alot of shadow magic and stuff
