I would love to go to Egypt, Australia, New Zealand and then Japan in that order. I loved living in Ireland and would have no qualms living in Dublin for the rest of my life if I couldn't stay in the U.S.
I have been to Italy, France, Germany, UK, Portugal and Spain. The smell in Paris and Marseille was truely disgusting, It was a shame too, because all the beautiful buildings but yet this smell I could not get over, I actually had to cover my mouth and nose when I was there. I have been to many cities, and other countries outside of those as well. My next trip is planned for the netherlands, I hear they are cleaner, I guess I will find out when I visit. London and Florence also had that really strong "moldy" smell. See when a towel starts to smell like that here .. I throw it out. But the whole place smelled like it there. I am sensitive to mold, maybe that is why it affected me so much. I would imagine that people that are always in that environment get used to it .. it would probably kill me instead though. I mean if you come to where I live and breathe the air here , you would see what I am talking about. It is like it is in the earth, the plants, the air itself.
I live in In the US, and love it here. When I visited europe a few years ago I was digusted by how dirty everything is and the smell of urine and mold is unbearable. I could not wait to get back home to the fresh air and open spaces. It really made me appreciate how Beautiful our country really is. We have beautiful oceans and mountains, forrests and plains of open unsoiled land.. and it seems That empty land in itself seems to be the greatest thing about it. I could not believe how foul smelling those old cities really were. Yes the architecture is beautiful there, but I could not get over the stench of the place to enjoy it that much. I guess the people who live there don't notice it since they are used to it, but I don't think I could ever get used to that . phheeww!
Because everyone knows that we don't have those over here in Europe.
I don't think you understand what I mean by "unsoiled land" .. what I consider open space cannot even fit into any one country in europe, hell my state alone is bigger than any one of the countries over there. Every city there has been built and rebuilt so many times that there is this" smell" about it. Yes you do have have some of those things, you also have a smell.. that I just can't get used to. It is in the air, the floors the ground itself. We have lots of land that has never been built on ever... in the history of the world. It has a fresh smell to it that you do not find in europe. Though sadly one day with the population of the world increasing this is a luxury that will some day be extinct. I am going to enjoy it while it lasts.

I didn't assume anything .. I have been there. No not everything has been built on in recent years, but can you just go build a home in those areas? It does affect the smell, just because you don't smell it does not mean the smell does not exist. No not everyplace smells the same, they had different degrees of bad. I don't like the smell in NY either, don't get me wrong. And like I said in my other posts, People who live there become" used" to it. They don't smell it because they have been there for a long time. My landlords go to Europe quite often and they notice that same smell. Its a dank ,musty and just foul stench that pervades many areas. Especially around older cities. The same thing can be found in a number of american cities as well. Generally it has a lot to do with older buildings having improper drainage.
Several locations seemed to be void of this smell. The alps seemed to be the best smelling location.
I personally think Asia was a wonderful smelling place. Even though trash was being burned on the sides of the street and there was open sewage I never really smelled it. TO many other smells masked the stenches. Sweet fruits, spicey foods, flowers and so many other factors made it soooo enjoyable! WOHOO! Cant wait to go back!

Europe has a lot of diverse countries in it (about 50 different soverighn states), and the USA has a lot of diverse regions and cities. i know when i was in Genoa in Italy there was sewage smell in some of the older parts of town comming from the drains, there was also alleys where the reak of urine was pretty ripe. but that does not represent all of Europe. I currently live in Switzerland and it is one of the most astoundingly clean places. Everytime i visit France or Italy i am amazed at how different Switzerland is. Hell any of the cities in Switzerland that i have been too are all cleaner than Sydney Australia.
Now are you going to tell me that there is nowhere in the USA that there is a very ripe smell of people living on top of each other? some of the seeder places in the biggest cites? like NY?
Could it be that the clean air you breath in the USA is because you choose to live in the nicer places? could not someone in Europe make those same choices? What about if you looked more thouroughly for a place to live in Europe? counldn't you find somewhere nice?
There is no doubt that there are still more wide open places in the USA than Europe and that Europe has the world oldest plumbing (being a Roman invention and all) however saying that all of Europe smells like sewage and that nowhere in the states does, is likely to to be an exageration and also offencive to a large number of people.
If all you visited while in Europe was the big cities, the ones that are significant for tourists, the statments you have made are like judging Texas on a your visit to New York and Washington.

I agree with what you are saying about it being determined by which area you decide to live in. I have no desire to live in New York either. I had stated before that I was happy living in Texas, not NY, and that I was happy to live in america because of the opportunities it offers in terms of allowing you to build a good life for yourself , whereas in alot of other countries that is difficult if not impossible to do. How easy is it in other countries to come from a poor family, and with almost no funding start your own business and become sucessful enough to be able to buy a 4,000 sq ft home, with pool on a clean lake where you can drive your own jet skiis and cruise around in your own boat without even being considered "rich" by world standards? Yes the smell has to do alot with me wanting to stay away from any cities, but not the only reason, the overcrowding, small spaces.. it feels like everyone is on top of each other.. When I get home, I always feel a greater appreciation of where I live, and what I have accomplished here. I do apologize if I offended anyone by referring to "Europe " as a whole when yes in fact it was certain countries, and cities within Europe that left me covering my nose and mouth. From your previous posts I thought you were an alright poster, but judging from this thread I can see how ignorant you really are. Firstly a large portion of Russia is actually in Europe, seriously brush up on your horrendous geography before you insult someone.
You talk about living in the clean and unfilled land outside, yet your experience of Europe only carries you to it's major cities, WOW it's major cities and you complain about the smell, I could go to most major American cities and complain about the smell too.

What country did you go too?! I use to live in Europe and I've never seen cleaner cities in my life. Try going to Zurich, Switzerland. It's the cleanest city I've ever been in and the mass transit always arrives every 15 or 20 minutes. On second thought, maybe you shold stay home. Not every one should travel outside of their local area.
London is the city for me. once i've made some cash and had some fun i will go back to the most interesting countries in the world, namely those that are not more economically developed countries (3rd world) as they are by far more interesting than any other country that i have visited.

I promise you, people in Scandinavia are pretty good at English. We begin to study English early. And I don't know many that can't speak/write English well. And I'm even counting people that don't study.

It does affect the smell, just because you don't smell it does not mean the smell does not exist. No not everyplace smells the same, they had different degrees of bad. I don't like the smell in NY either, don't get me wrong. And like I said in my other posts, People who live there become" used" to it. They don't smell it because they have been there for a long time. I live in Texas, where most of the land here is not built on, so yes I would be more affected by the smells of the old cities than say someone comming from a big city. I never said the people were dirty, the buildings are. I never said that people urinate in the street.. at least I hope that isn't what caused it. It is like it is in the soil, the sewers, like the ground itself. Now yes I do love my country, but that has nothing to do with me actually having to cover my nose and mouth when I visited Europe. That had everything to do with me trying to keep myself from getting sick.

My landlords go to Europe quite often and they notice that same smell. Its a dank ,musty and just foul stench that pervades many areas. Especially around older cities. The same thing can be found in a number of american cities as well. Generally it has a lot to do with older buildings having improper drainage.
Several locations seemed to be void of this smell. The alps seemed to be the best smelling location.
I personally think Asia was a wonderful smelling place. Even though trash was being burned on the sides of the street and there was open sewage I never really smelled it. TO many other smells masked the stenches. Sweet fruits, spicey foods, flowers and so many other factors made it soooo enjoyable! WOHOO! Cant wait to go back!

beastliest, it is the broad generalisations that are probably the the problem, on both your parts.Europe has a lot of diverse countries in it (about 50 different soverighn states), and the USA has a lot of diverse regions and cities. i know when i was in Genoa in Italy there was sewage smell in some of the older parts of town comming from the drains, there was also alleys where the reak of urine was pretty ripe. but that does not represent all of Europe. I currently live in Switzerland and it is one of the most astoundingly clean places. Everytime i visit France or Italy i am amazed at how different Switzerland is. Hell any of the cities in Switzerland that i have been too are all cleaner than Sydney Australia.

I don't think you understand what I mean by "unsoiled land" .. what I consider open space cannot even fit into any one country in europe, hell my state alone is bigger than any one of the countries over there. Every city there has been built and rebuilt so many times that there is this" smell" about it. Yes you do have have some of those things, you also have a smell.. that I just can't get used to. It is in the air, the floors the ground itself. We have lots of land that has never been built on ever... in the history of the world. It has a fresh smell to it that you do not find in europe. Though sadly one day with the population of the world increasing this is a luxury that will some day be extinct. I am going to enjoy it while it lasts.

First of all you make the classic mistake of assuming that every area in Europe has been build on. Rebuilding a city does not affect a smell as much as you would like to believe nor does every era in Europe smell the same. I agree with what you are saying about it being determined by which area you decide to live in. I have no desire to live in New York either. I had stated before that I was happy living in Texas, not NY, and that I was happy to live in america because of the opportunities it offers in terms of allowing you to build a good life for yourself , whereas in alot of other countries that is difficult if not impossible to do. How easy is it in other countries to come from a poor family, and with almost no funding start your own business and become sucessful enough to be able to buy a 4,000 sq ft home, with pool on a clean lake where you can drive your own jet skiis and cruise around in your own boat without even being considered "rich" by world standards? Yes the smell has to do alot with me wanting to stay away from any cities, but not the only reason, the overcrowding, small spaces.. it feels like everyone is on top of each other.. When I get home, I always feel a greater appreciation of where I live, and what I have accomplished here. I do apologize if I offended anyone by referring to "Europe " as a whole when yes in fact it was certain countries, and cities within Europe that left me covering my nose and mouth. I have heard that the alps are beautiful, I have heard sweden and switerland are as well, and hope that I have time to fit them in to my next visit. From your previous posts I thought you were an alright poster, but judging from this thread I can see how ignorant you really are. Firstly a large portion of Russia is actually in Europe, seriously brush up on your horrendous geography before you insult someone.
You talk about living in the clean and unfilled land outside, yet your experience of Europe only carries you to it's major cities, WOW it's major cities and you complain about the smell, I could go to most major American cities and complain about the smell too.
If you're trying to argue about the smell why the hell are you comparing some fresh Texan land to condensed cities in Europe which are 100s of years old? Why don't you actually visit a European countryside perhaps, or is your skewed view confined to thinking Europe is just one massive city.

What country did you go too?! I use to live in Europe and I've never seen cleaner cities in my life. Try going to Zurich, Switzerland. It's the cleanest city I've ever been in and the mass transit always arrives every 15 or 20 minutes. On second thought, maybe you shold stay home. Not every one should travel outside of their local area.

I was considering Switzerland, until I saw that statistic.
Now I'm thinking of settling down in Austria/Luxembourg/Germany (in that order). I'd consider Singapore, but I've learned to never ever make your home a place where the people are vastly different culturally and where you don't speak the language.

Singapore sure would give some culture shock. The people there think in a entirely different manner then a average urbanite from the Euro/American regions. Albeit there friendly enough in there own way. There also competitive as hell. Something alot of people realize and as Moo seems to realize is when you live permanently in a area which they dont speak your language you begin to have serious issues.
When I was in the Philippines I felt totally out of whack after a month. I realized I wasnt part of the conversations going on because I couldnt be. I realized people expected different things from each other. Even if they were generous they also were twice as brutal. Still one can adjust hehe

The middle class in Europe is in danger and signs are already on red allert....the average costs since the introduction of the €uro are extremely high and the net income didnt raise since years. Things changed a lot since the 90ies.
