The Witcher

MeridionMeridion Member UncommonPosts: 1,495

I recently made a non-mmorpg visit to "The Witcher" - you might or might not know the game, at least it had not caught MY attention before, on a long afternoon 10 days ago, I decided to download it (I've got a game flatrate and wheneever I'm bored of MMORGs, I start some new game that sounds interesting)...

Why I enlighten you with totally pointless facts from my RL .... to take this shortcut: O - M - G. This has to be the most exciting, most fun, most balanced single player RPG to date. At least in my world, this game hits the mark in about every aspect you could possibly imagine.

The interface is intuitive and very easy to master, the combat is extremely tight and fast-responding, combined with the best animations I've seen to date, the skill system has many options but is self-explaining and fun to experiment with. And the best thing is: Theres Alchemy that actually matters. In other games alchemy is either "dude, I collected 10 harpyie fangs, 10 basilisk eyes, 20 moonglow-leaf and 2 piles of doom-chicken shit to get this, its too precious to drink" or - what is even worse - "Hey, I drank the potion of dark might and it buffed me with +2 HP, great"... But not in the Witcher, you can safely consume about every potion even if it might be wasted on an easy fight, still it pushes your character and really ADDs something to the fight. Why? - Because the game incorporates alchemy as an essential, not a friggin "yea, mix some fortitude crap, whatever"-sidekick. The only game  that came close is the Elder Scrolls, STILL, there the effects often lasted not long enough, making everything a rush the moment you were buffed.

Yea, I know, I'm kinda drifting away here, I'll cut out the part where I chant a hymn on a stylishly overemphasised, gritty, medieval world where your decisions actually matter and people act like they do in the real world, greedy, powerhungry and ruthless...

A+++ for the witcher, beats everything story-driven single player RPGish I've seen so far....

cheers,

Meridion

I think its awesome you love the game.  Its a rarity to find a game you truly love anymore.  I never could get into Witcher at all. I think I played it for about 4 days.  There were reasons why, but Im really glad you liked it!

Seeing someone falling in love with a game is such a rarity these days lol

Meridion, glad to see you like The Witcher as well. I just reformatted the other day, and that's one of the few games that I immediately reinstalled. I'm waiting for the new enhancement patch to come out, and then I'm going to play through it again, along with the new stories added in the enhancement patch.

I'll probably buy the new enhanced version once its released. One of the upsides of a game flatrate. You can still buy the game if its really good. Maybe I'll even start it all over again and join the Elven side.

I watched the critic review, it's hilarious, and actually true. Combat IS basically click wait click wait and the fact that you can have sex with about every major female character that crosses your path... well, whatever, I can't even tell why I like this game so much, must be the mixture of matrix like uber-stylish swordfighting, the gritty, bladerunneresque world and the depth of the characters...

btw. is it true that the US version is censored? Like the dryad in the swamp wears a weed pushup top? *g* In the European version shes just completely naked....

Bah, you're amazed by anything.  More proper sig would be:

    >'Atheism' ignores fictitious God.

    >Christians freak out because you ignored their invisible play friend.

    >Science advances.

    >God dies.

    >Quit? (y/n)

    >No. Because you, and everyone else, just won!

    >World celebrates because ancient story no longer gets people burned at the stake.

As for The Witcher, I played it for all of 3 hours and then gave it away to someone I hated.  I think THIS sums it up very well.

for the sake of conformity(heh) i shall not respond except to say the witcher had gotten good reviews and i have yet to play it.

Yeah, U.S. version is censored, I bought the U.K. version from Amazon as it's not censored. Also, if you have the game you don't have to buy the enhanced. They'll have a download with all the new content available for those who already have the game.

I don't own the game, I have a games flatrate subscription. Means, I pay 10 bucks each month and can choose to download the games the flatrate provider offers and play them. Once I cancel the subscription I can no longer play the games.

Plus, I can't alter the games since I have to be connected to the flatrate server while playing them. It's like renting DVDs, only you can take any disc you want and keep it as long as you want until you stop paying your monthly fee...

I personally wanted The Witcher for a long time purely because the name and box caught my attention. I was really disappointed with the game, however. The combat system was awkward for me, not enough freedom. If the game had a combat system where you could freely swing your sword and hope for a hit on the enemy, it would be the ultimate single player RPG. I played it the first day I got it, the intro impressed me, then I completed the first mission and I'm in the next town.

I think the game restricts you too much and doesn't allow enough exploration and freedom of controls.

I have the game too .. and I couldn't stand playing it for more than one hour. I find that the controls are terrible: Movement and combat are clunky to the point of it almost being turnbased.

I do love turnbased games (especially Final Fantasy Tactics, my first turnbased love!).

This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.

Oh, okay. Kinda like Gametap then.

I totally agree on the freedom part. I love the game not at all for virtually non-existent freedom or for exploration. The world size is a joke if you apply any MMORPG measure...

The game got me right from the start actually BECAUSE its more of an interactive moviesque adventure with alchemy. The fights are not challenging by themselves, they are challenging because they offer the possibility to find out which of the attacks, finishing moves and specials mows down the incoming hordes in the most stylish way. I didn't even care that I died like twice during the whole game on medium. I love It solely for the atmosphere, story and awesome swordfights...

Especially the decision making is a real blast imo, where you can basically support terrorists that hold children captive and torture humans to death or support an inquisional, oppressive, religious order of darwinistic tyrants. Like in real life, someone always has to suffer.

Yea, I start hyping the game again already, sorry for that. It's just "wow", its like every 15th game or what that gives me these feelings  ;o)

Improve your Group weapon skills. Fast and Group skills are big, at least they were for me. Also pumping your Str and Dex will help, too. Once you get your timing down, you can easily blow through LOTS of mobs. In fact, if you get more than a certain number, you do improved things like knockdown on them.

I really had fun with The Witcher. Was with the Elves all the way. :)
