Played 10-20 minutes, crashed to desktop, CPU won't run it again at all.

Specs:

OS: Windows Vista Home Premium

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz

RAM: 4.00 GB(4x1GB)DDR2 800

System Type: 64-bit OS

Video Card: Dual NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT

HD Capacity: 500GB

Ok, so I got my new CPU and spent the night installing some extra RAM, and my wireless Network Adapter Card. Everything seems to be running fine and I'm digging my "good fortune" that there were no issues leading into my 3-day weekend. I decide to load AoC and everything goes smoothly. Disc 1 then Disc 2 then back to Disc 1. First hiccup is that the intro video stutters. God only knows why the hell I can't watch the intro video when I just paid over $1.5K all together for the chance to be able to play the actual game. I shrugged it off and went through creating the account and logging in.

I found the Player Creation to be a tiny bit laggy, but nothing to worry about(especially since I hadn't tweaked my video settings yet). I started playing and despite things being a little choppy on High, Med, or Low Default settings the game was running well. I was getting into it and had just killed the Slave Master guy and gotten a little bit closer to Tortage when the game crashed to Desktop. Unfortunately I didn't think to remember what it said.. maybe something about an "unknown error" but I figured I could just log back in. Here is where I ran into trouble. I couldn't find where the game was loaded on my CPU. Usually your start menu will flash that there is a new item and then you can just click the game logo icon but nothing was showing at all.

I opened Explorer and found the Drive showing the game but there was no exe. file for me to click on. I tried selecting the option to "Setup or Run" the drive but after coming up with a window asking if I want to "Setup" only(no run option), it doesn't do anything else even if I choose to Setup. I tried opening and closing the drive tray to start an auto-run or even an auto-setup but nothing happens again.

At the point all I can think to do is to remove AoC entirely from CPU and try to re-install. Anyone else have any suggestions? Oh, and any ideas why the damn intro video stutters(video and audio)? Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated.

Ok, so I removed AoC and spent a good hour reloading it and patching it. Finally got into it again. Once more the intro vid doesn't really work for me, but once more I didn't really care, I created a new char just to save a name after realizing a lot of my favorites were already taken. I started the tutorial again and then went to exit the game. I meant to go to the log-in or char select screen but instead exited AoC Completely. Unfortunately I am running into the same problem now. The game is definately on my CPU but I can't figure out how to run the damn thing without starting from scratch and obviously I can't do that each time.

I saw a message on the official AoC Tech Forum that Vista won't put a game icon on the desktop and instead sticks it under "games" in the start menu. Problem is that AoC isn't there. If I try to click the setup icon in the AoC Folder on my Drive in Explore it says the game is already installed and asks me to cancel new setup. What am I missing? I am new to Vista and i think it must be some simple Vista Related thing.

Anyone with Vista who can tell me where to find the damn Game Launcher after you install and patch?

Dont blame the game..your problem is windows vista 64 bit..wtf man..why do you have vista installed? its 3 years from stable and ready...if ever...

With that rig you should run the game at max settings anywere from 30 to 100 fps, no drops..

  • LaserwolfLaserwolf Member Posts: 2,383

Well, the CPU came with Vista otherwise I would have stuck with XP. I didn't get an option to choose my OS. I'm not really blaming the game, I am blaming Vista. I figure AoC has got to be on my CPU but I just can't find it. Opening and Closing the Drive doesn't do it either. Just figuring someone else who has Vista and loaded the retail version should be able to tell me how they relaunch AoC after inital Play.

Find your Age of conan file and exlpore it fine the Conanpatcher Icon, and click it. It should work . I had to do that same thing. Then when i just made a shortcut to my desktop with it.

paladinum, if you cannot offer assistance to his question just keep your mouth shut, man. They call that thread hijacking.

    Laser,

Did you get Service Pack 1 installed on your Vista yet?

You are insane if you think a 8600GT can handle max settings and get up to 100 fps.

Also, is it too much to ask these days for game developers to make their game compatible with the OS that the VAST MAJORITY of the computer ships with (32 bit version, not 64)?

Your assinine comments regarding vista are sadly what's fueling this poor practice. 90% of the times the only reason people downgrade to xp is because "they heard their friends say that it sucks".

Heh, sorry guys apparently I was too stupid to check the right "Progam Files" folder. I finally found it here: "C:Program Files (x86)FuncomAge of Conan". The (x86) threw me off. Vista really is confusing as hell to someone who grew up with 95-XP. I really appreciate all the info though.

I do have the Service Pack 1 for Vista. Any ideas about the intro video have major Freeze-Frame and Audio Stuttering issues? Could it be Driver related? Drivers are still a bit of a mystery to me but I know enough to make sure they are updated and usually I can figure out how to install them. I just didn't want to mess with it on day 2. Especially since I just figured out how to run the game without re-installing.

For some reason, the installer is not creating a desktop icon on Vista OS's.  So, you will need to go to C:/Program Files/Funcom/Age of Conan and create a shortcut of the ConanPatcher executable and place it on the desktop.  It's a bit annoying, I know.  The intro video stutter has happened to many of the players, not exactly sure why that is.  Make sure you have your most recent video card drivers installed and you have the most recent DirectX drivers as well.  AND, if there are any driver fixes for the CPU, be sure to install those as well.  I know there are some drivers out there for dual-core optimization (especially with the AMD CPUs).

As far as the "logout" options, they are a little goofy as well.  I don't think you can directly get back to the character selection screen for some reason, but you can log back to the username/password screen.  What you'll have to do is the logout option, and actually wait the 30 seconds, and don't click on the "Exit Now" button, because that will just drop you back to the desktop.  I think that is also a Vista issue from what I have noticed.  But there is nothing wrong with using Vista, and if you have a DX10 capable card, it's worth it in my opinion.

While Vista does lack some needed stability and compatability, it is stable enough to use and get fairly good results out of.  Hope this helps you...

Thanks Brihtwulf, I'll check into the Drivers now.

    i just upgraded from a 8600gts(256MB) to 8800gt oc2.

    vista 32bit, 2gig ram, 2.4quad core.

with the 8600 i had to play on medium with 2.0 shaders for smooth play. and it was very smooth. installed my 8800gt and cranked it to high with shaders 3.0. @168081050 i get 25fps in tortage, smoothly. much higher fps elsewhere in the game.

try shaders 2.x or 2.0 if you are studdering or bad fps. ctrl alt f to display fps.

    chips, dips chains & whips.

Sounds like a graphics driver issue to me but on another note why did you SLI two of the 8600gt?  For that money you could have bought a 8800gt or maybe even a 8800gts G92 model that would torch a SLI'd par of 8600's.  If you bought the system that way never mind the gpu question just curious.

And to the guy that said vista was ready, NO it is not ready for prime time and the benchmarks of games will show you that exact fact.  Games just don't perform as well in Vista and until I see more companies utilizing DX10 whats the point of using it?  I mean really games don't even ship with DX10 enabled half the time(AoC, Lotro, etc) so basically you are using a OS to lower your FPS and eat up your system memory, man what a great deal.

The launcher in vista os is put into tyhe games section of your start menus. Hit bottom right hand start menu go to games it will be in their.

Trying to launch the exe from the programs folder will not work at least not for me. When i did that got errors galore. I finally had to reinstall game and lauch from the games foler has previousley mentioned

Have you done all the appropriate 'permissions' for UAC? I only ask because if the executable isn't running that could simply mean Vista's crappy UAC is trying to block it. Then again it could be an incompatibility between UAC and AoC, but it wouldn't be the first because even some of the 2003 development tools by Microsoft which my friend owns (Visual Studio 2003) won't work with Vista at all. Go figure. Meaning, I feel your pain and wish I could give you a copy of XP 64 PRO. :(

feels like a driver issue. Wouldnt hurt updating your driver.  Go to geforce main page and then go to driver downloads.

From there pick the 8000 series. Youll download, install, and then reboot the computer.

Your are way off the board with computer talk.....The cpu is the little square component, you know...the thing that is measures in ghz these days example Q6600 @ 2.4 ghz. What you are saying "The game is definitly on my CPU" this makes ZERO SENSE and makes you look like a monkey. A game is saved onto your hard drive, not the cpu......It sounds like you have no idea what your doing over there.
