Right now you can fly to the outer reaches of the galaxy and pretty much be immune from attack by other players. I spent 5 days building a colony to have every building possible, one research done, filled up the planet with mines/flak cannons (had so many it told me I couldn't place anymore). It wasn't until 2 days ago (Milky Way) that our colony finally got attacked. So far we've managed to keep the enemies back with mines. The first day of the attack, we logged in to see about 50 cannons taken out. We unfortunately were not online for the attack, so I do not know the numbers involved, but we know which corporation it was. After our cannons fell, they apparently left the colony.. We had defenses at the entrance, and then deeper in surrounding the biodome. The inner defenses were untouched, the outer defenses were destroyed.
We bought up a ton of mines, and put those in place of the destroyed turrets.. Our plan was to force the invaders to make several shield runs if they wanted into the deeper part of our colony. We ended up running out of mine placing space, and had to stop before we were done, but we were content that it was once again safe to log out overnight.
I logged in this morning once again to see the mines at the entrance had detonated, but again the inner core had been left untouched. I do not know if this attacking corporation is playing with us, forcing us to renew our defenses every day, or if they are actually held off BY our defenses. Unfortunately I have yet to be online during an attack, so I cannot tell for sure.
Now, onto the subject of my post. Right now you get 15 people average on Milky Way.. When the server is brand new like 1-2 days you get 30, but then people move to other servers as they reset. The playerbase has greatly increased since the game was advertised on ctrl-alt-del (that's when I got into it), but it needs to increase even more. In order to do this, Aaron needs money. Where does he get money from? Admirals Tokens!
Any indie free game usually has a donate button on the website, and/or an ad in-game, asking to donate. Like a few games, Starport not only asks for donations to help support the game, but you actually get something in return. For a mere $5US you can fly the Intergalactic Ship on day 1 of any game. Or you can use that $5 to buy an additional 2500 fuel. You can even exchange tokens directly for credits, though I've never considered that since creds are pretty easy to get. Finally, you can purchase nukes for 250 tokens each. Nukes require you to be a pirate, OR have a pretty strong colony to build them for you. One way you're hated by everyone and can't log out in starports, the other way takes several days of time.
This is not a post suggesting you spend all your money on an IG ship and 8 nukes and 5000 fuel on day 1 so you can destroy anything that moves. Even a mere $5 will help pay server and advertising fees. If you enjoy this game as much as I do, donate. You're supporting a game you play for FREE. You're not buying online currency for real life currency, that is merely an incentive. You are DONATING to a game you play for FREE, to help them out. And this in turn helps you out, because it keeps the game free, and eventually, it will help bring more players in.
And, you don't even need a credit card. Of course, a credit card is instant, but you CAN use Paypal. And you do not need a credit card to use Paypal. You just need a bank account and online banking. $5 is like one less meal at McDonalds, and helps support a great game.
This has been an unpaid advertisement brought to you by the Eminence corporation, and everyone's favorite Pirate, Amante.

Probaly they are playing with you, if they are competant. They may however be incompetant. I know if it was me I'd have your colony on the first day:)
They may also be farming your turrets for exp, they get 100 per turret kill.
I'm only 17, so I don't have a credit card or online bank account to able to donate to Starport, but hey, it's only 5 bucks, why not spend it if you can?
And as for your colony, it's either some crappy players attacking it or their using it for easy experience.
And Xira, you'd probably like to know that flak cannons (previously the laser turrets) are twice a strong although I haven't tested it out yet, colonies send out distress signals when invaders land on the surface, and escape pods can't land on colonized planets.
Well that's good, I fully support the devs in their efforts to make the game better and more fun. I heard they fixed pod-colonying somehow...
I however feel that those changes are inefficient. A simple analysis suggests that the way I usually took over colonies hasen't been hurt at all. I would simply sit out of range and bounce bullets/Vulture missle/Nuke/photon torpedo the turrets.
The only gameplay change I see this effecting is the ability to take certain planet types where you can heavily turret the only exit from the drop zone, which may now actually be the hardest to take planets.(as opposed to a diffrent planet under the old system)
A good change but ultimatly not enough, diffrent turret types must be added.
Whoa, the starport message board has had an overhaul since the last time I was here!
Yea, definitely more people in a server = more fun. The last milkyway game had over 1500 players by the end (not on all at once). This current one is alot less.. It's bizzare
Personally, I think there are a few too many servers running at once... There is a standard type game, a fast game, a large corp game and a pax type game, which is a good thing for having different strategies etc. but atleast 2 of each.. if there were 1 of each, you would have your more players at once wish fulfilled. When I started playing this game there were only 4 game servers, and it seems like that was enough choice for me anyhows...
Yeah, I think it would be better if there was only one of each type of server. It would be much more dynamic with more people in each game.
