I'm not a big fan of manga...

...is there still a chance that I could like this game?

Of course there is.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate or even dislike manga or animé. I used to watch animé when I was a kid and still today I can find myself slightly charmed by the manga art-style.

BUT, somehow I get the feeling that the devoted Aion fanbase believes that one must love manga in order to truly be justified to follow the games development and have an opinion.

If is there a chance for you to like this game? Well that depends on how do u see the perfect mmo for you. Just take a look at some videos , screens , and also some article and fine out by yourself if you will like the game. Also I would not call Aion to have MANGA graphic.

If you are looking for a game like AoC with his graphic , then this is not your place for you.

Nono, nevermind the graphics. I want gameplay.

It's just that I realize this games potential but at the same time I'm put off by the "asian-grinder" reputation. I'm not saying that manga = grind but i can't deny myself from making such a resemblance.

The graphic are high fantasy which I like it :)

Anyway , the gameplay is focuse more on PvP . There are two races , Asmodians and Elyos and a 3rd race Balaur which are a non playable race . Hence , for more infos you can check some videos here : http://eu.aiononline.com/en/movies and for any other questions that you might have , take a look at this FAQ http://www.aionsource.com/forum/general-discussion/3323-ultimate-aion-faq.html

    Hope you enjoy !

Well Aion is Korean, and that means its Asian.

Asian culture on games tends to anime style, as were western tends to the typical cartoon style. No you don't need to love manga or animé to like this game, because its a game, and not an anime, if your problem is gameplay, you will problably like Aion.

However i'm pretty sure you won't like the world/environment/characters so much as the rest of the fans, because as you says, you dont appreciate the type.

Concept arts are mainly based in Manga.

But it's another kind of manga, there's difference between the Ragnarok style and the manga seen in Aion, Devil may cry or Final Fantasy. While there are games that try to show Manga-like characters, with big pink eyes, blue spiked hair, a small shadow instead of a nose and cute mouthes without lips, Aion tries to approach realism without loosing the style, which result imo is gorgeous.

Everything is up to preferences, but let's not forget that games with the same style as Aion, and Aion itself always get high scores in the graphics department by experts who rate them, even if you don't like the style, the quality of work and textures is undeniable, the ammount of details is also great, making it way more complex than making a white tunic (seen many times in western style fantasy games) the enviroment, and the way the world fits with your character's design is perfect, and that's what defines good graphics for me.

And, as OP states, even if you don't dig the graphics, the game concepts and things shown in betas are also awesome, so I'd guess some people can still like this game just by the gameplay.

But many compete over who has the most "chibian-looking" avatar and it makes me sick.

Thanks Ephimero for clarifying the two different styles of manga. I have many nostalgic memories of Final Fantasy 6 (or 3 as it was called in EU) and I can see how that style has evolved into what will become Aion.

Now, let's make this a non-grinding and pirate-server free game and we can all live happily ever after. Cheers!

I am just very happy that its anime like., but good that it isnt the anime/mange like with big eyes.. cuz if that would ruin it. but this is more drawn the way like " devil may cry" style and i like that.  wouldn't know how the characters would be looking else way, its pretty human asian based [hairstyle]. if it were characters like age of conan you wouldnt see me playing it,. cuz that just sucks

You need to look at it this way, it has been described as:

Lineage II - Without the grind. Even for its time today Lineage II still has a gorgeous art style and a huge huge open world. Even with the grind it is still one of my most favorite MMOs that I played so hearing that made me jump for joy and giddy as a school girl.

Guild Wars - Without the heavy instancing. Now you can't argue that Guild Wars had some amazing looking graphics and world for its time still today they are up on notches of some of the MMOs that pop out today.

The way I see it is they took 2 of their best MMOs took out the flaws and made a perfect win win MMO that everyone will enjoy. The influence behind those two titles is only going to make Aion stronger.

Yeah!. L2 is my nr.1 favorit mmorpg. graphics are just gorgeous, [no gloom/blur used] it just so sharpened and since kamael graphics  it even got improved. but i didnt like the new race.

I actually hoped Aion would be more like L2 movements. but this is just a whole new game. not pick up drops like GW or L2 but .. looting, and you can compare the movement with GW. and i don't like the idea of showing up the HP of the Enemy's [pvp] you are fighting with, that should be done like L2, just don't let them how much HP you had left.

showing the HP will show allot of the characters tactics in playing the pvp.

I also played GW [factions and prophecies for a while] but i didn't like the game, the way you move,  the graphics, bad acting cinema's, so i put the dub korean and sub english but it still failed. can't believe that so many ppl are playing guildwars, its a good game but surely not the best, but anyways i cannot tell anything about this game because i look it the mmorpg way which i should not compare with an online rpg. maybe if you would see the ppl walking  outside [mmorpg] with you it would be playable.

Anyways Aion is just going to be a wonderufll game. and i'm looking forward to it for a long time!! totally now that  i bought my 22"  screen + a 17 inch attached [i worked for it btw]

see you gamerz in Aion. have fun.

As long the world, movement, animations all fit together i don't mind if it has manga/anime characteristics.

But it runs on the Far Cry engine, so i really doubt we'll be looking at something cartoony.

btw it isnt that mange/anime based characteristics the characters got a human like body [which looks like a realistic humans body] not the style of most mange with .. like square leggs style. the only thing that looks like anime/mange is the hair but ppl in asia [espacially japan] got those hairstyles for real.[those big final fantasy hairstyles] so still its just realistic human asian based chars. the only style anime you can compare it with is the anime " devil may cry" which isn't the cliche of the manga.

so i don't think you know what you're wasting words at. first check out the way style cartooned the anime/manga looks like. and you will understand that you are wrong.

If you look at the posts after the one you quoted you will see that we already mentioned different styles of manga and that we are glad Aion won't be a chibi like Hello Kitty

I can't stand manga or anime.  Never understood the appeal at all.  I hope this game isn't really like that, and if it is I'll have to move on.

  • warrioralphawarrioralpha Member Posts: 41

ok.. almost look like racism to it :P , but if you don't like manga anime than you havent played much games yet. get to know what manga/anime is and how they make them graphicly its a diffrence.

do you know what "final fantasy" is? :P well i hope you do respect the art of the anime manga cuz its not just some thing to draw. and in games they usually look exactly like humans, just some more cool haircuts [which jap uses irl :P] and some rare clothing.

To me, this game is more of a high fantasy.

However, the community (not on these boards) are determined mangalovers and embrace all which is cute and cuddly. It becomes a bit over the top IMO.

My guess is that since it's a Korean game it gets attention from ppl who are interested in Asian culture.

Hopefully it's not something that we will notice when the game goes live.

The term you are looking for is Weaboo/Weeaboo (however you want to spell it really).

I cant stand weaboos, they should all be put in one big pit...then set on fire.

PS: Im looking forward to this game, character creation looks good.
