    @OP
According to this presentation 10 characters per server. That should be enough to satisfy all alt'o'holics, myself included. :)

Exactly what I was suspecting. 2 short of satisfying real altoholics :S

Hmm, good point, 12 would have been better. Oh well, it could have been less.

I know this might be a really simple question but not having played any other MMORPG with the exception of AoC, I was wondering what usually happens when expansion packs are released?

Will we be given extra slots to try out new classes (if there are any) or will we have to delete one of our existing characters first?

    Reasons to make an alt:

You have gone as far as you can with your main.  You have reached your end game experience and can go no further.  There is nothing left for you to work towards or those things that you can work towards are not available to you for various reasons (happens often with casual players and in linear games) - this shows that there are flaws in the game, you should never experience this moment unless you are ultra uber super leet.  The reason why people want sandbox or at least perpetual/cyclic themepark cartridges within their vitual world.

You need it for crafting purposes.  You don't feel that you should deal with other players in a MMORPG which makes me wonder why you are playing a multiplayer game or the cost of items are way too high for you liking and you don't want to be gouged.  This shows a problem with you or with the online community.

You are bored.  Related to the first paragraph - you should never be bored playing a game.

You think it is a better class than your main.  You made the wrong choice when you first rolled your character either because you didn't know how you like to play or because the information was not available to you when you make your choice or maybe the professions available do not appeal to you.  The flaw is with you or the game designer.  Here is the reason why people like skill based games so they can mix and match to build their playing style.

Bottom line:  The only reason to roll an alt is because of general flaws in the game design or flaws which are exploited by players.

Which do you think Wahammer will have since you are already anticipating alts?

Or you want to try one of the other classes just for fun, just to feel what it's like. Even if you're still having fun with your main.

    Genius.

In response to the OP, I heard there were 10 slots per server, that means 9 alts. I know, I wanted 12 slots, maybe they'll change it in the future.

    --------------------------------------
A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

Or to switch up the pace, try something different, play with other friends who may be lower level?

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

Not sure if this will happen with WAR, but Mythic did so with DAoC if I am not mistaken.

The dumbest conclusion I've seen in ages.

The sheer fact that there are classes which gives me the opportunity to roll "something else" aka an alt is exactly why I want to have alts, because they can let me experience something I can't with my main.

That doesn't mean I think the grass is greener or there's nothing to do for my main. It's just, something else to do.

diversity, to much gameplay to be captured by once charater, one race or one class. Every class makes the game feel differant, every race has differant arc enemie, with changes your tactics and gamestyle.

Is Mass Effect bad becouse I have three save games with three different classes or is it good that I can enjoy playing three times and the same storyline over an over again?

Unlike wow which I have been playing since launch, not all of the classes in war appeal to me.

I can't actually see myself using all slots even over 3 years. For the following reasons:-

    1. With wow it was a case of 1 character hitting max level so I'd 'twink' another to help power level an alt, its just so much easier to experience every class in that game.

2.From what I have read, there is so many ways to customise and play your class in war I doubt I'd ever feel the need to switch classes very often.

I'm thinking at most I'll only have 4 alts (2 per side).

Then again when I played the original neverwinter nights online I had around 40 alts on one persistent world.

So who am i kidding :P

So you are playing a game and having fun and for no reason at all you stop and start playing something else?

Why would you do something else if you are having fun and you feel nothing is out of place?

Think long and hard before you answer.

Low attention span caused primarily due to excessively playing video games or watching far too much tv over the past 3 decades probably.

Also each class in these games are purposely flawed so they cant perform all functions, this is to encourage grouping.

Roleplay as well, ever watch the british kids program from the 70's Mr Benn? That guy chose a different career every day, yet he always had fun:P

Here you have 2 sides, 24 classes, 4 standard archetypes, why pick just one?

There are lots of reasons. Not everyone rolls alts, a buddy of mine has only recently rolled an alt after happily raiding on his priest for 3 years (which he still does).

When playing DAoC my reasons for an alt were as follows.

    1) I just needed a character focused on crafting

    2) I wanted to roll a class that was my main characters weakness in RvR, after getting bested by them more often than not on a regular basis (i.e. I'm playing a caster, I get ganked by a bunch of stealthers, I want to make a stealther, I play my stealther and get killed by a tank, I want to make a tank to kill stealthers, I play my tank and after killing a few stealthers get killed by some wizard bolts, I go back to playing a caster.) Lather, Rinse, Repeat.

    3) I was just bored with the class I was playing

    4) I felt like experiencing the game in a new way, that is why they make more than one class am I right?

    6) To powerlevel guild members (Necromancer/Spiritmaster/Animist usually)

    7) The raid (RvR raid) group needed a healer.

    STOP WHINING!

I believe we will continue to see the same amount of char. slots that we have seen during DAOC( more or less ten).

There was a question at the Baltimore Gamesday about this. 10 chars per server is the official answer from Mythic.

I disagree. I would like multiple character slots for several reasons.

    - Experience the other content. With two sides and multiple starting areas thats a lot of PvE content I wont see if I just play one character.

    - Believe the journey is the game. ie The game starts at lvl 1 - not at max level.

    - How better to learn a classes weaknesses so you can beat it in PvP than by playing that class.

    - Have 4 kids who would also like to play

    - Cant decide which of the classes I am interested in to play. I can see several classes I could enjoy playing. Swordmaster, white lion, warrior priest.

    - I can also see several classes I might enjoy that are different to what I would normally play. Eg Witch Hunter, ArchMage.

If I am bored - I wont roll an alt, I will cancel my subscription and move onto something else.

To the people who found the info I was after - thanks - 10 is plenty.

Plenty, yes....but as I was figuring on...just shy of being able to have an alt for each class on 1 server!  Pretty sure they did this on purpose....blah!  Ah well, will just have to eliminate playing  2 classes from each Faction or end up having to roll on 4 diff servers eventually.

I have to agree with Kraiden here. Why bother with valid questions when we can just troll. Even the mods encourage it now lol.

Say, does WAR look a bit like WoW?

Those 2 are valid reasons and you can add them to the list.

If you're doing the first one you must be a psycho hardcore PvPer because that is an insane amount of time you spent on something that doesn't really matter much when you look at it.

The second one is a very valid point.  EDIT: Are those really alts or someone else's main?

    The rest are already listed.
