sfwtboysfwtboy Member Posts: 217

So I just got a new ATI Radeon HD 4850 and after putting it in I uninstalled my old drivers but I may have uninstalled my old audio drivers but once I installed my new drivers for my new graphics card (including audio drivers) I still can not hear sound and it says no audio devices connected

Are you sure that is the same driver for your graphic card and audio? try to remove and reinstal... even make a hardware test (removing fisically the audio device), turn all on so the windows can identify the empty slot, shut down, plug agian and turn on... make sure to use the latest driver on the manufacturer site... if it doesn't help, try to get any linux distro and run the hardware test (this is the ultimate test you can do)... if it recognizes your audio card then is a windows error, if doesn't check with a new audio card...

    GL on that.

But I didnt touch the audio card all I did was put in a new graphics card. And where can I get this test?

Do you have Vista and was your old video card a nVidia?  If so you will need to install new drivers as specified above because of how Sound is processed through Vista and how each company dealt with it.

the hardware test is on the first disk of any linux distro... you just run like if you were about to install (is the first step).

The hardware test on windows might be a little faster for you... take off your audio card and turn on the puter (windows should refresh your hardware config and see that there is no audio card anymore). Turn off the puter, plug the audio card again and turn on... if you did removed the driver and never noticed, after leading the windows you will get a "new hardware found" window... proceed with the install and see if it works (try changing the slot). If it doesn't work you have a hardware issue on your audio card... yes, sometimes it's random...

Use it to see your hardware config... if it doesn't find anything you think it's connected or working nice, it's not... you also will know the model if your stuff and will be able to get the latest drivers.

    Ok...

    ATI: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

    nVidia: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

all you need is to find your drivers in there.... pretty simple.

sounds like you uninstalled all nvidia products, including your nforce motherboard drivers (inc audio)

you'll need to install these again, this nvidia nforce driver is just for your Motherboard and on-board sound.

then you'll need to get the ATI driver

For the ATI HD4850 drivers you download the most rescent iteration of Catalyst drivers.  Just use the link provided when clicking on an HD3850 card.

    Whats your sound card?

Edit-  Oops forgot to ask the easy question.  How many watts does your Power Supply have?

    on here

    http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

select nforce (this is for you motherboard + onboard audio driver)

as you might not know what motherboard you have, do you have an original CD, or use the Option 2

Option 2: Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products from the link above

if that works, never tried it

    edit..

That Option 2 might be for GFX drivers only, you may need to have a look at any Motherboard manuals that came with your PC, this should tell you what nforce version you have. (also need to know if its AMD or Intel)

google the drivers you need... use the manufacturers links...
