My First Week Review of Tabula Rasa

Bunktown207Bunktown207 Member Posts: 47

I went ahead and went with the 3-day trial (even tho my computer is under the minimum system requirements with a 2.0ghz P4...the rest of the system is over the minimums tho....Basically it has some jumpyness to it anywhere outside of a cave or underground facility, but it isn't so bad that it makes me hate playing it....yet....)

But yeah, after the first 1-2 days of the trial I wanted it, so I bought it online from the website($50...I didn't want to wait to pick it up somewhere else), you have to use a credit card when you sign up to get the free month...instead of getting a one month of trial time, you pay for your first month (or 3 months, 6 months, I took 1 month), and then you get one month free for paying to play.  I wasn't impressed with that part much, but I liked what the game had to offer so it was alright.

The game is pretty fun, I am on the Ranger path right now on the way to be a Sniper at lv 30...they get torqueshell guns...the shots from those accelerate the further away you are, causing more damage at a greater distance...so I'm kind of excited to see how that will work out with my gimped processor, haha.  But the rest of the game like the quests are like your typical MMORPG quest from like, WoW or LOTR, with the little quest banners (these ones happen to be radios) above the NPCs' heads, after you finish it you get to select what reward you want.

The thing that caught my attention about the game thus far was the point and shoot with the mouse, again it IS the only recent Sci-Fi MMO that I've gotten into, so the change was/is nice...however, there are some glitches and bugs; in the storage footlockers sometimes my gear that is stored won't be in there when I open it up, then I have to exit out of the game completely and restart it from the Desktop.  Also, sometimes the game will crash for no reason by itself back out to the desktop.  I've gotten stuck in the background a few times, but the /stuck command usually bails me out no sweat.

The community seems unusually small to me...comparitively speaking, but I figure its just where the game is on the newer end of the spectrum, but usually whenever I have a question people are usually pretty helpful for the most part....unless it's about effin' Pravus Research Facility, then...well...we won't even get into it...

The map is the most complicated part of the game...it is topographical.....not just bird's eye view, where you can run to the map and you are there.  Well, sort of....the spot does still appear on the map, the little radio, but if it is higher it has a little arrow pointing up, and if lower a little arrow pointing down.  This is where it gets tricky.  The entrance to get to where the quest icon is, can be literally ANYWHERE, I'm talking halfway across the map.  Really, it's not that big of a problem, it just can get frustrating when you have to spend a big portion of time climbing back and forth up and down over the ledge of a lake cake that the entrance is on the middle ledge that you have to take a path that circles around the opposite side, all the way back up around.....sigh....Ok, I'll stop.  That's about the only thing I have against the game so far.

Anyways, I'll stop rambling, I would def. recommend it to anyone who would like a change from the stale realm of dime a dozen MMORPG's, just be prepared to deal with a few kinks.

    Sounds about right.

There is a tiny community. But, with recent events, the game is gaining momentum. It's still in horrible shape, but the devs openness with the community lately is huge. On this site alone, the game has gone from 7.8 to 8.1 in the last 3 weeks.

There are some... supposed... big things in store for the game too.

One that will help you Bunktown, is the new "bubble" for loading world details. It should free up your processor considerably. I also play on the lower end, and CPs are the biggest problem currently. In Deployment 10, that should improve.

Also, as far as the map: If you find that you're on top of it, using world map first, you can usually find a faint outlining of a cave. Just follow it to where you see a large faint entrance, and you'll know where to start. Once inside, the map should change and it's easy to manuver. But it can be tough at first.

I can't believe you paid fifty bucks for TR.  Seriously, you can get the Collector's Edition on ebay for five dollars.

I didn't want to wait...and all the used ones you get on eBay come without the trail offers, plus I would of ended up express shipping it, *AND* you never are guarunteed that whatever you order off from eBay is going to get to you brand new, mint condition, etc. etc.  I have had some bad experiences with ebay before, and it's been a while since I've bought a game brand new (I wanted the box and book, but Movie Gallery, Wal-Mart in this area didn't have it) SO, when it came down to it, I didn't want to shop anymore, I wanted to play it, so there it went.

(You've kind of got a point tho, with the limit I had to spend, I would of just ended up spending the rest of it on beer...but all I would of drank about would of been when Tabula Rasa is going to show up =P....That's another thing tho, it could of ended up taking like a week before it was actually delivered.  Bottom line, I didn't mind having to spend the extra loot to get the game I wanted, guarunteed, from the company that made it, right when I wanted it, with no disappointments from a third party *error*).

Just talking about it makes me want to drink beer now, haha...but then again, so can everything else.  I do see where you're coming from tho, just not the choice I made.

Some of it is challenging, you're right about it being tough at first with some things, I'd have to say that it's just the difference between the game itself and the other previous ones I've played some or whatever.  Like I'm still getting used to switching back and forth between different weapons like physical is my main, I hardly ever use EMPs or Lasers or anything like that, basically its between shotgun and rifle for me.

I like the whole title deal a lot, it makes me feel cool to have a few titles on the screen...I DO wish, however, that there were benefits with them like on umm, I believe its LoTRO...every title you earn you get little attitbute bonuses from it.

But yes, the map can make me itch after a while, I have found myself on the highly promoted logosatlas and TaRaPedia for quick answers to my n00bed out questions.  The game itself has a really casual feel to it tho, which makes it easy to get addicted to and spend hours at a time on...that could just be my personality or whatever, only time will tell I guess.

    EXACTLY

once you hit 30 you will so feel like a fool for paying 50 when you coulda got it off amazon (with the free month and all that) for like 10, you can even get the preorder thing (again serial intact) for like 2$.

how bad is it when a game is nerfing the graphics (not that they havent been nerfed considerably since closed beta) when they should be whispering about an expansion.

i did almost the same thing btw (i didnt sodomize myself by paying 50$ for it though), i still have like a week of game time left. hit 30 and just decided "f*** this". the glitches (again most have been there since closed beta), the fact that it is so easy to respec (god forbid the choices you make ]in a game where you can clone yourself anyways[ matter), the fact that the sound effect for the shotgun reloading doesnt sync with the action of shotgun reloading thus canceling the fact that you reloaded when you switch to a nade launcher which you dont generally pick up on until you switch back to the shottie only to find it has 1 shot in it...its all just stupid crap that could be easily fixed IF they didnt have anyone with any actual talent working on aion since about the time that game launched to present.

shoulda read a review instead of writing one, we all know the game is dogs ass, i think anyone would be fairly honest about it (even in game 75% of the stuff in chat is people bagging on the game). i was just hoping it would have improved since the closed beta ugliness...nope.

I could of picked it up, for $12.99 (brand new)...+ $9 for 2-Day Shipping = $22.......Online NCSoft Store, $50....so $28 difference....so yeah you guys have a point, I just didn't want to wait.  Simple as that.   $28, for making a game that I liked more than the assish stale monotonous dime a dozen.....free.....mmorpg's out there.

It's an investment, it just might end up making me work another day of my life....a whole day....or 8 hours...give or take....all depends on how you look at it.....but its still only $28 to me.

    Moving on....

So I'm assuming that both of you guys have quit by now or what?

...and whats this promised changes and vapourware?  It's been out for 2 like months...

  • JpizzleJpizzle Member Posts: 371

It's been out almost 8 months actually.

If you're having fun, screw everyone else. I still like the game. Yes, it can be frusrating. I cancelled and resubbed about 4 times already. But I doubt the game is dying. I mean, people have been saying that about SWG for years and it's still around.

  • amoroneamorone Member UncommonPosts: 209

I am actually a level 43 sniper with my main and STILL have a blast playing. It is a nice break from other games or just simply a way to spend a little fun time. From day one, it was aimed at casual gamers, so I just laugh at those that claim it's missing "this or that" that they seem to feel some entitlement too based on other games. If you are having fun, keep with it. If not, take a little break and maybe revisit it later. Hey, no one said you couldn't play several games at once...even MMOs...though some whiney a$$es on here would sure like to make you think so. To the OP, see you in TR !

Note: People have been saying TR is dying after about the 4th month. People started saying SWG was dying after 2 years. hmm, 4 months to 2 years...yea...

Listen OP, I'm the guild leader of Cassiopeia's formerly largest and most active guild, the 47th AFS Expeditonary Force (now the 47th Continoman Expeditionary Force in anticipation of Earthrise).  I actively planned public server events as fast as Critters, the Community/PR/Event person, would allow me which was once per month.

I began TR at closed beta, played at launch, and made it all of the way until the end of April.  I sat there each week at our unit musters trying to brainstorm something, anything, to do for my members.  I sat there as a level 50 for four and half months, and I took my sweet time getting to 50 mind you, farming one specific mob in one specific spot, on one specific map waiting for some content, any content to be released.

In that time what did the devs deliver?  Two instances, neither of which can be repeated.  Military Surplus.  Some hybrids which are nothing but a cosmetic variation on humans.

I sat there in November of last year reading an interview that was all about Personal Armored Units, small mecha that were to be introduced into the game, only to find out in a Producer interview from mid-April that coding hadn't even begun on PAUs.  That the pet system ala Guild Wars' "Heroes" was completely canned, that months and months of profession development were focused solely on sniper and spy while the rest of the professions suffered from out right neglect.

I sat there through an absurdly high player attrition rate.  Most of my members didn't even make it to level 30 which isn't even half of the grind.

Months and months and still TR has absolutely no real content.  Nothing compelling.

You'll be done with this game very quickly and you'll regret not having that $28.00 in your wallet the next time you hit a bar or head to Taco Bell.  I can't believe I spent $140.00 on this game after all is said and done.

I really, really tried to make TR work but in the end the dev priorities were so ass backwards that after six months of a live game they still didn't have a single piece of repeatable content for level 50s.  What's truly sad is that on their recent list of their top eleven priorities post 50 content came in at #10, second to the last above only promotional support.  And this is after eight months...

Finally I gave up.  So will you.

Sir I will take it from you, if you honestly believe that I am not cut out for this game based on what you have concurrently advised me to believe then, just give me the orders.

I am fairly aggravated mind you, that you failed to comply with the other 2 questions that I had inquired about sir.....

I'm not going to tell you to the quit game.  You've already committed yourself by plopping down fifty bones for it.  I'm just flat out telling you that there isn't anything in this game to look forward to and that the developers' priorities are atrocious.  Pretty much the worst I've seen in every MMO I've played and if you take a look over yonder (to the left of this text) at all of those acronyms under my avatar you'll see the list is pretty extensive.

You'll honestly enjoy this game for a few weeks.  After a month or two... maybe, most people don't last that long.  Will you be playing this game a year from now?  Absolutely not.

I will sing it one praise though.  I honestly enjoyed the combat.  A lot.  It just wasn't enough to carry the entire game by itself.

Other two questions?  About "giving up on my squad and your review?"

No and no.  The 47th has since moved on to kill time in Guild Wars until Earthrise releases.  In fact, quitting TR actually helped the 47th along quite a bit as I got the forum updated, installed a really dynamic module system with full vBulletin integration, and basically learned how to program all of it.  The relaunch of our website was fantastic.  I still can't even believe I did it all by myself considering I didn't know anything but the basic mechanics of HTML going into it.

Not sure what you meant by "gave up on your review," though.  I read the entire thing.  I'm just here to temper your excitement about Tabula Rasa.

My only "real advice" for you is to make sure your subcription's "auto-renew" feature is turned off.  Make your decision month to month.

come back in 8 weeks and tell us what you think then as that's all the time it takes for a rabid fanboi to see the light and look behind the curtain

yes, the combat rocks, but it's not enough

the devs have been promising shit since late beta and have consistently failed to deliver

the only thing they have done has been to rape the ranger line so often and so totally that it boggles the mind, all the while ignoring the other classes

I loved it in beta, hated it live, went back at xmas, lasted till my spy was half a level away from 39, then they raped him and I was left looking at grinding to 40 because I had run out of missions

that was it, that was enough, I cancelled then and haven't regretted it.

basically - the game had a shit-load of promise and, had they implemented it correctly, AND listened to the community, it would have been ground-breaking. Instead? It redefines meh and epic fail on a regular basis.

if it was a cheaper subscription, then it might still be worth it, but the box was overpriced, and the monthly fee is totally unjustified. 15 bucks a month for what is essentially a pay-to-play beta is a rip-off

Forgive me, but all this is starting to make me lean towards the disappointed side of what I have hoped for this portion of the latest in the NCSoft series to be nothing more but a publicity stunt.

I remember when I was watching one of the 'BIG' announcements that I'm pretty sure was (in 06'?), the one where they announced  their new MMORPG (this)....and I remembeing being disappointed because I was hoping it was Square Enix that had signed with them...and then shortly right after that announcement on tv, their president at the time moved on to Microsoft...I know you guys know who I'm talking about.  He got the tattoo of GTA on his arm...Sorry I stayed up late last night so I'm kind of grogged out atm...

But it sounds like to me from you guys that have been around it that the game's as good as it's going to get...which sucks to hear AND consider...I mean what the hell else are they working on that they would ignore their BIG TIME project?  If it's not lazy, then they just gave up on it...that's just sad...and deep down a part of me says that like 2/3 of them are playing Age of Conan, the other 1/3 are looking for jobs somewhere else....

I have lost a lot of respect for NCSoft after this thread...shit I might just go back and play Final Fantasy XI....when the hell does Spore come out?  Maple Story sucks, LoTRO is ok...for being torn out of an age old literary series...never played Everquest, Dark and Light I don't want my computer to crash, Shadowbane is fuckin hardcore, but retarded, Ultima Online was my first MMO, WoW made me feel like I was playing a cartoon, but the controls ruined it for me, just like Dungeon Runners (NCSoft mind you for those who don't know, I also wrote them a letter asking them to mod it to change the controls around, haha, but no luck there either), Lineage II, Rappelz, Pirates of the Burning Sea etc etc etc...

sigh...and now I don't even know if there's going to be another Final Fantasy mmo, the Haerasis(?) project or whatever.....

I want to drink beer now....

    Kinda weird reading these forums.

On one side you have a new guy enjoying his new game, no matter his taste for beer women or mmorpg's.

And on the other side you have this vet devoted to a game that was almost as important to him than real life career.

No middle ground, no prisoners, I mean gee is it so wrong to purchase a game(mmorpg) play the game say for 2-3 months then be done with it and move to the next thing.

Does every game have to be the "end of all", "I wanna play this title for the rest of my life", "yes honey you can divorce me but leave me my game account"?

When I play an mmo I set myself some goals, a level to acheive a status, gear set, etc..Then if I have fun reaching my goal at my own pace, once I reach it I look around...Is this still fun? Is there another fun game around?

Then I move on or not, it's that simple. If you ask me every mmo I played sucked in a way, none of them could compete in term of self accomplishment when compared to retail videogames, not only that they all cost more than your regular videogame...

Just think about what kind of critics Crysis would receive if you had to grind herbs, if you had to do the same level 5-10 times before unlocking the next one.If you had to pay the game 50$+15$/month untill you completed the game :D

Yeah, I played like twenty hours a week give or take in the winter and that dwindled down to 5-10 once it started to warm up outside (I live in Minnesota, downtown Minneapolis to be exact, but our winters are cold).

The point is that I didn't sit there playing TR for forty hours a week.  As far as guild leaders go I was pretty casual.  But there came a point where I absolutely dreaded logging into TR for my weekly unit muster which was all of five or ten minutes.

And then I quit.  I'm glad I did.  Eight months after launch and Destination Games still has absolutely no repeatable content in the game and has no idea what the hell they're going to do one week from now let alone a coherent development plan.
