from reading posts in this forum lately, i'm noticing lots of folks commenting on flying covert ops frigates.
just as an aside from the normal "can a rookie catch up on sp" and "i love/hate eve" posts, i thought i'd start up a thread on stealthy ships... why did you/do you want to fly one? what kind(s) do you fly? are you shooting for black ops (if you haven't already gotten it)? do you mainly use it for exploration and not getting ganked whilst searching? do you go hunting other players, all stealthy and if you do -- do you have any interesting win/lose/draw stories to share?
just anything involving any of the stealthed out ships in eve -- what do you think and what do you do?
me, nothing overly exciting. occasionally go hunting for some exploration sites, scouting for a gang, and occasionally try to hunt down unfriendly folks hiding in their SS too close to our home.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

Several reasons for me.
First off, covops frigs are ideal scouts due to their ability to warp while cloaked. This allows a skilled covops pilot to operate in lowsec with total impunity and makes covops ships one of the few ship classes that stands a good shot of being able to run a 0.0 bubble camp.
They're great recon ships. Recon in Eve is very important since you can't just send some random guy on a kamakize mission to see what's beyond the next gate or what the enemy's fleet setup is. They're also a mobile warp-in point for a friendly fleet allowing them to get the drop on enemies.
They're also the main exploration platform due to their astrometrics bonuses. This, combined with their natural stealth, makes them by a large margin the best ships to do any kind of probing with, be it exploration (for industry types mostly) or looking for people who'd rather not be found.
Their utility and total lack of firepower also makes them attractive to people who want to be successful outside of trade and industry but don't want to actually shoot anything.
I love the cov-ops frigs and cruisers. Personally use the frigs to probe out missions/ships. I use the recons to spy on enemy activity/call in air strikes (get a good warp in spot for the dps guys). Recon cruisers are also a griefer dreamboat, if you like can flipping they are uber.
I must admit i was told recently that with all the exploring merlarkey you can really gain access to some stuff that will make you lots of isk, like gas mining (yes, i know i had been out of the game for sometime and missed that), but i realised i play eve for fun, not isk and covert ops... for me would be more a toy to play with till i get a sin than a viable weapons platform... maybe a stealth bomber
p.s. does anyone else think they should rename the sin, domi of doom just for the fact that it would sound good... and be true

Stealth bomber, frigs with BS sized cruise missles that insta pop other frigs.
i trained up to fly a manticor bought it fitted it and then found i had no use for it now i'm not saying they have no use cause i am sure they do but for me a player who pretty much only played with a small group of 4 friends running missions it was just no real use
now maybe one day i will grow a pair and venture out to some less then friendly places or join a corp that pvp's then it will be more useful (one can hope)
With manticore you can pretty much instapop frigates, destroyers and probably kill cruisers too and ofcourse miners. Really nice ship for pirating.
I am working on the skills for a Manticore.
I see it being used as a recon ship, a hunter killer ship and just general scouting. Great for taking out small support ships or helping with dps on the bigger ships.
Good fire power, stealth platform and not super expensive.

Someone correct me if im wrong but stealth bombers cant warp while cloaked right? for me that makes the stealth part not really very stealthy, more like pretty much every other ship in the game, apart from being a frigate with a shed load of fire power

You are correct. SB cannot warp while cloaked but it still allows them to scout out the system they are in which is a big help. Also they can get into a good spot and have the gang warp to them while they unleash a massive alpha strike.
The SB also has the ability to choose when and what to fight.

It does not take long to get into a cloak. A cloak can be fit to any ship although the specilized ships work best as the penalties don't effect them as much.
I cloak my Nighthawk all the time for PVP (Command ship).
Cloaks have saved my arse many times escaping .
One time specific was in 0.0 we were in a battle of about 50 of us vs close to 100 enemy. My fleet got wiped out and I was left on gate. I had stopped firing when the last of our ships were going down to loose the gate agression (gate don't let you jump through if you were just firing on someone).
Luckily the enemy didn't stop firing or notice I did. I managed to get through gate with over 50 starting to fire on me. On other side of gate I warped 100k off the next gate and cloaked, then slowly moved out of the line to the gate and watched everyone fly by me.
I was the slowest ship in our fleet and the ONLY one to make it out of the hostile system. I sat cloaked while the enemy searchd the system seeing me still in local.
Thanks to a cloak my Nighthawk was saved.
SHOHADAKU
I wanted to get covert ops so I could be a "covert salesman" whereas I smuggle goods into 0.0 and charge outrageous prices and get rich. little did I know we would switch alliance after I did all that training, id hate exploration, and in my new space it so safe prices are close to empire prices anyway
Bah. still it useful for reporting intel, scouting, and pinning down hostiles
Because nothing says "hello to low sec" when a fleet of cruisers and battle cruisers tries to aggro your buddies Battleship off the gate and you and another 9 stealth bombers decloak and offload an insta pop salvo. Besides getting rid of those pesky interceptors and tacklers while in fleet is a big help.
