Is there such a thing as too much fantasy? Who still reads all the quests and lore. Who even knows why they're in the world anymore?
The first MMO I really got into (EQ) I could tolerate the fantasy up to a point to be honest, the fantasy was outlandish and weird, but ok, I could take it.
But the more and more MMO I play the less and less I'm willing to go along with another outlandish world so different from RL, trying to learn the world, or feel somehow related to it.
All these worlds and stories and stupid factions, magic, NPC's, all with a different story and quest etc....ugh.. what the hell.
Why can't games just be games, why does everything have to have such weight to it, half of it not even making sense. If I wanted to read a book on fantasy I would, but I chose to play a game, not have fantasy overload of yet another world on the verge of destruction where I apparently play a hero together with 1000 other people to save it.

The reason I like fantasy is because it's different from real life. Almost anything can happen in fantasy. Yeah saving the world can get boring and even worse it loses it's luster when there are 1000 people doing the same thing that you are, but it's still better then playing a real life war game IMO. Real life is great, but I don't enjoy playing games much where I'm stealing cars or pretending to be a soldier in a war that took place in real life. That is a bit to real for my taste. Especially when I just want to unwind.
Yup what the poster above me said. Fantasy is still the very core of an MMO for most people. It lets them do things that other genres would not. I think people like the amount of freedom a fantasy brings them.
Who let you in the VIP section?
Fantasy is the dominant genre because people get incredibly picky as soon as you add guns.
Suddenly they're not happy with one click combat any more but want a full MMOFPS, which is not really possible on the scale that they expect, or the subscription base the developer hopes to aim for.
I never really minded fantasy, I actually enjoyed it, but I think you are right, OP. For me, fantasy is great but I like a story much better when I can make a connection with it. Harry Potter is one example - while it is completely fantasy, it takes place on Earth, in England, with people who don't have powers at all.
Not sure if that makes sense, but yeah...
Which FF Character Are You?
I'd pay for a Harry Potter world MMO.
LOTR got the MMO treatment, the matrix got the MMO treatment, pirates of the carribean got it too.
Sure as poop we'll see Harry Potter's world see it soon enough.
because killing boars is less stupid when you're doing it to save the world. No really I'm being serious.
we know all quests fit into only a few catagories. escort, kill, courier. If you didn't have wacky lore you would only have... 3 quests. the lore is what seperates killing boars from killing ogres from killing dragons.
sure its not the greatest system, but most of us enjoy it so its fine by me.
Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.
When people go to a movie or read a book, for example, it's for one of two purposes: education or entertainment. Games, by and large, fall into the latter category. Whether I am indulging in fiction or non-fiction, I want it to be extraordinary. I live in the ordinary world, where ordinary things happen all the time. I have little interest in watching a move about ordinary events, I want to experience (through a movie character or a game avatar) the extraordinary, the rare, the amazing, the history-making.
Fantasy can be anything, although perhaps the op was referring to the elves/dwarves/trolls variety. Playing a spy in the new 'Agency" mmo is still fantasy, just that of a different role. I don't think there'd be much interest in a game where the character woke up, showered, went to work, came home, ate watched tv, slept for 7 hours; repeat.
So do I, but...

Fantasy in reference to game genre is generally used to signify the elves/dwarves/etc variety.
They could call it "medieval", but it isn't. So fantasy it has to be. The alternatives are generally referred to as "modern", even if people can fly and shoot fireballs, or "sci-fi" as a catch all term for futuristic.

Wow. Burned. So bad. And thats why Sims 2 is one of the worst rated mmos out there.
But yeah, I understand how the OP feels, fantasy is basically the most popular genre of mmorpgs, but if you look around the game list, you'll realize that theres plenty of games with out the fantasy genre. The most popular being EVE online (Sci-fi). Theres plenty of original games that deserve attention, based on what you're looking for, it all depends. Like Planetside or Neocron 2 if you want a MMOFPS that are both sci fi genres. If you wanted a sandbox genre, Second Life is probably the most popular of the sandboxes... Just do what I do occasionally when I'm looking for a new game. Go to the Game list under this site, and just browse through the games, I usually make the list go in order of rating so I can test the best rated games out first, then proceed down the list till you find a decent game, rinse and repeat. Just do some research.
Neocron isn't really FPS since it's all dice roll combat. A bullet between the eyes can still count as a miss.
Regardless of what they are though, Neocron and Planetside are both pretty much dead.
Neocron is a fun game, good concept, great character customization, great story as well, the unfortunate aspect: Sponsorship/Developer. with no money, and when the developer is based in europe, theres only so much you can do. Regardless, its still fun playing through the trial.
Planetside just needs to be tweaked a bit, needs a bit more customization towards the classes, the guns, etc, also definatly needs a new engine.
Fantasy in itself isn't so bad. I think the problem really sits with the shear amount of very similar sorts of fantasy. Medieval, swords and sorcery fantasy. WoW, LotRO, EQ, and maybe hundreds more. Doing it again is just walking the same ground that's already been beaten down into a nice, safe path and calling it an adventure. It just doesn't cut it anymore.
But what about other fantasy settings? 1800s "Pirate" Fantasy seems to be doing pretty well for itself, in games ranging from Pirates of the Burning Sea to Sword of the New World. Futuristic Fantasy is being covered well too. And don't even get me started on how heavily Asian Fantasy has been hammered into the ground.
That said, there are other settings that would lend themselves well to a fantasy setting that haven't been so overexposed in the MMORPG realm. Steampunk is one that I've been pressing forward for a while now, and the only real applications I've run across are a single free-to-play game (which was crap) and elements of it in other games. Being able to take control of steam-benching steel mechanical suits (look up "A Gentleman's Duel" on Youtube, please) and fighting it out with similar folks from another army would be quite entertaining. Perhaps working in blimp and airplane combat in some form could be done for this game too.
Another option is modern fantasy. Now, this has been touched on once or twice in console games (softly), but what do you think would happen if humanity had grown with the use of magic and had domesticated assorted mythical creatures, from dragons on down? Picture your lovely city of skyscrapers with people riding atop dragons and griffins, and beside them flying carriages. This one would have a sort of fantasy/retro future thing going, like tossing The Jetsons & WoW in a blender and hitting "Churn".
Yet another is a fantasy western. Ever see Trigun? Pretty much that. Sorry for the lack of elaboration here, but this one just seems pretty straight-forward.

Looking Forward To: DC Universe Online, Blade and Soul
I don't hate fantasy and still enjoy playing those types of MMOs... I just crave something different and I'm hoping Earthrise and SGW fill the gap...
So do I, but...

I see your Sims 2, and raise you The Sims Online.
Let it be known that I hate WoW with a passion and will defend almost any MMORPG against it.
Current: FFXI (PC/360)
Want: FFXIV, Stargate Worlds, Star Trek Online
Past: AC, AoC, AO, Atlantica Online, CoH/V, DAoC, Dungeon Runners, D&DO, EVE, Everquest I+II, FlyFF, GW (all), Lineage 2, LOTRO, Mabinogi, Maplestory, PSO (DC/Xbox/PC), PSU (PC/360), PlanetSide, RO, Shadowbane, SWG (Pre-NGE), SotNW, TR, UO, Warhammer Online, WoW, WWIIO

I'm confused, did you think I'm supporting The Sims or something? I personally hated that game ever since the reduced payment by jobs patch implanted during the second week of beta since it made all the work performed seem pointless because it was excruciatingly difficult to make money at that point.
SwampRob said there wouldn't be much interest in a game like that.
Grunty, you gave a successful example of a game that people actually (surprisingly enough) do play, and it sold over 30 million units world wide.
I stated an example which failed miserably at launch and finally ended 6 months ago (technically). In posting a link that tells the failure of The Sims Online (which I would've contemplated checking out EA Land sadly since it was gonna be F2P), you merely reaffirm my statement rather than support your own.

too much fantasy in an MMORPG annoys me a lot.. they could get straight to the point though... majority of players didnt bother to read those what is written...
I would like to see a high quality ninja based MMO :P
considering that pirates are all the rage atm,
i am hoping for a change X.x
There can never be too many fantasy MMOs because that market can never be saturated.
The market for sci-fi games however are much smaller, if you don't believe me then have a look at the sales of fantasy books versus sci-fi books.
It wasn't always like this, the 70s were the golden age for the sci-fi books but has now been greatly surpassed by the fantasy books.
There are three distictive types of sci-fi:
1. The Star Trek / Star Wars theme. (Actually, Star Wars has a mix of fantasy thrown into it and that might be why it's more popular than Star Trek)
2. The cyberpunk theme.
3. The post-apocalyptic theme.
Type 2 and 3 can be mixed together but I have never seen type 1 mixed with type 3.
(The Borg brings a little type 2 into the type 1 which is Star Trek)
By the colour of your text I think I understand what prompted you to write this.
That's why my favorite will always be Wurm Online. Though I hate the idea of an entire game made in Java ( and haven't played it for a few years now for this very reason ), the game is more about interaction with others than a story. You build stuff, you live, you work for other real people if you need stuff, you join a city, maybe settle down and make a house, make a weapon, kill an animal and cook it, it's a neat concept.

Whats wrong with the colour of my text?
It makes it more easy to read on a black background than the gray text.
