In my opinion RG just wanted some quick cash, so he signed his name to anything so he could go into space.

Its his dream so I cant blame him.

Perhaps..but he put a lot of work into this game before they scrapped it and started over with what we have today. He worked on this game for..how long? 5 years? and after about 4 years of work he just threw it all away and started over. That is pretty crazy if you ask me.

I don't believe he made this game for pure profit...it just got a little messed up when they were remaking it..

As far as I understand it...  RG is responsible for the scrapping of the old version of Tabula Rasa which he never created in the first place, it's what you play today that is RG's creation.

I have seen some clips of the old version of Tabula Rasa and it looked very nice, nothing like what you have today.

He was a pioneer.   simple as that.  He made a great series once, so you always get another chance.  At some point those 'chances' get taken away.  It's like the football star that plays one season too many.  Yep, you get a big final paycheck, but your legacy is ruined.

The question is.. will RG be remember for the innovative ultima series and UO.. or will be be remembered for the TR flop?

Is Emmit Smith a Dallas Cowboy, or an Arizona Cardinal?

More than one long-time non-fanboi gamer has suggested that Ultima Online was mostly Raph Koster's baby.  In the late nineties, Garriott was devoting most of his time to adventure traveling with Space Adventures and his elaborate parties and being the "corner man" for the convicted felon prizefighter he sponsored.   Maybe he got the credit  for Ultima Online like he got the Korean's money, through hype and personality.  Remember that EA couldn't get him interested in Ultima 2, though EA got all the blame then for mistreating poor Lord British by giving up on him.

It makes sense to me.   Seven years and Tabula Rasa?  Is this really what you get when a great talent works hard for seven years with an unlimited budget?  Or maybe the talent wasn't  so great, and not enough work took place.  But nobody cares very much about the investors.  We don't get games without someone who's willing to invest.

If you look at Koster's career, or someone like Trip Hawkins,  they are developers who  live and breathe games.   All Richard can talk about is why he deserves to fly in space, or his boxer friend, his eccentric collection of junk at Brittania Manor, his daddy issues with the astronaut...

Its what you get when after 3 years you decide its not working and scrap it and start over - and no longer have an unlimited budget.

    Cowboy.

Yeah.. I was hesitent to use "UO" in my comparison.. but the fact is that the reason UO existed is because there were a lot of us 'utlima' junkies clamoring for more.  As far as I know.. RG was more a promotional part of UO... and not really deep in the development side of it.  But UO will always be associated with RG.

In any event.. he used up his free ride.  People aren't going to be begging him to make another game.

So it was made because somebody wanted to make some money by selling stuff he'd made. Wow. Call the cops.

    Thank you for that link.

I wasn't a UO player, so I miss most of the UO references. RG designed a winning game, and TR was his vision. But whether the game succeeds or fails will be more than just the name Richard Garriott, so I fail to understand why so much focus on one person, esp. when he isn't involved in the development today or going forward.

All of this makes enormous sense and this single posts resonates with more truths than one can count.

Hopefully, he'll be remembered for the original Ultima series. Ultima Online was great and is still a lot of fun. Koster or Garriot? OK, maybe Koster and that's fine.  But it was RG's world, so no problem there either.  But I, for one, certainly did NOT expect TR to be like it turned out.  Like Romero...Doom or Daikatana?

And I know Emmitt is more recent, but if you go back to my age, you just close your eyes and pretend you never even considered Namath in a Rams uniform.  It just never happened.

Im going to sound like a Square peg in a circle hole but I really enjoyed TR. Its seriously flawed but it was a beautifully designed game which wasnt given the time it deserved. Then again neither was the orignal TR.

Personally Ill always remember RG for Ultima False Prophet. Simply a magical game

I think most people who have played TR enjoyed the game as it is fun. Its problems lie mostly in its lack of depth and the fact that for an MMO it is simply too short.
