player housing is great. it's your personal space in the world. it's a great place to decorate and display your possessions. player housing and cities is one of the reasons why i'm waiting for mortal online. a lot of sandboxers haven't even heard of it yet. the ceo of the company developing it was a hardcore ultima online player and is greatly influenced by uo.

housing = must have in an mmorpg (UO, daoc, vanguard, lotro) without housing= mmo´s like Wow and the other kiddy games

And strangely enough, no housing in EVE. (though we do have player owned stations, but they serve a functional purpose, we don't decorate them.)
I will say, looking at the poll results many players favor housing, and while I don't think Blizzard makes many mistakes, their stubborn refusal to not introduce player housing into the game rates up at the top of the list for them. WOW is a natural for housing.

Actually with corp theft and possible B&E (Breaking and Entering) with housing, I think Eve is more of a natural fit for housing than WoW.

i like player housing. It sorta depends on the style of them game. Some games just can't have the housing feature or it would seem retarded. But for the most part i think it would be cool to have in a lot of games
I would like to see player housing, but it really isn't a big deal for me when it comes to choosing a game.
I like the concept, but I don't really think much of my game time would be in a house sitting down and drinking coffee...it's a nice feature, but is never really something a game NEEDS to have or I won't play it.

I'm a big fan of player housing if it serves a purpose. I don't care about a house of my own, and urban sprawl can be very detrimental to a game. Indeed, I won't even bother with housing if it serves no purpose other then RP and to act as a player bank. However, when housing is used to promote a player economy (ala SWG) where individual players setup vendors and people organize malls and player cities with multiple malls, then the game takes on a unique perspective which I like quite a bit. It is for these reasons why I don't like auction houses, as they take away from the unique atmosphere that player cities and housing provide. Beyond simple housing, I also like player cities that act as an oasis in the middle of vast expanses of land, providing needed services (such as hospitals, banks, travel centers, resupply depots, etc) to the weary traveler. Of course, a game that supports player housing in the manner that I prefer must be very large, as the player cities should be a part of the world, not instanced. For that reason, I see WoW as a game that player housing wouldn't add much to (e.g. wow is small).
In a fantasy adventure MMO housing has no place. Adventurers, if you read any fantasy books, spend most of their "rest time" in Inn's or camping out in the wild. How many people remember Frodo saying "Ugh! This ring is a PAIN! Samwise, lets go back to my crib and rest a bit, I got this cool Gandalf poster I want to put on my wall"? Never, that's when. If they can add a "set up camp" feature, that'd be an interesting aspect to have for those who roleplay, but be honest with each other, when you're in a fantasy adventure trying to save the world from whatever evil armies that are trying to take over the world.. YOU GOT NO TIME to go to your home and rest. You're home in fact is destroyed and all that remains is blacken ash and rubble.
I already have a house in real life I have to take care of. Why on earth would I want the headache of caring for a virtual one as well?? It seems like an waful waste of space to me.
I say as long as it doesn't interfere with my gameplay go for it. But if I end up haivng to navigate around 30 houses randomly sprawled about to get into town - forget it.
IMHO, I believe what someone wants in an MMO is dependent on their current level in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. A true MMO should encompass a broad spectrum of offerings to satisfy all players. For instance, SWG has guild cities (Level 3, belonging), Fighting PvE Loot and PvP Honor (Level 4, Esteem).
An important question to ask is what needs should a MMO satisfy?
Player/Guild housing is probably the least important feature an MMO could add. Why spend so much in time and resources just so a few people can role play? EA needs to make a fantasy version of The Sims for these people. The housing in MMOs like SWG, EQ2 and most recently AoC have caused nothing but problems. Developers don't want to deal with the head ache that housing creates and get nothing in return for it.
Mostly because it makes a mess of the game world I believe. Even though you can dsignate areas for building to help stop people from urbanizing the landscape it's still messy. On top of that people are joinning and leaving the game a lot so empty houses may be taking up a good portion of the game. If you played UO after a while there was no place you could go without a house or a castle. It was a bit of a mess even though housing was somewhat neat.

They do have the means to clean up abandoned houses, as they did last year based on active account time. One mistake they did make early on in the game was changing the way maintanence worked. Back then, if your house ran out of maintanence then it was destroyed. Of course, this had its own flaw that if the player had alot of credits then they could pay up the maint for many years ahead of time.
How about set up a personal store with vendors and merchandise cleverly arranged so people will buy it from you and you can make ingame currency? (instead of a worldwide AH)
How about your house is a cantina where others can come watch you perform and heal them?
How about your house being instrumental in guild related functions because you are the mayor of a player city and you're in charge of elections, guild recruitment terminals, and getting crafting stations set up there for your guildmates to use?
How about using your house to make RP social events come alive?
Fancy bank, pshaw! And these examples are from ONE game. ONE game that actually made houses not just pretty, but practical. Honestly I will play games with no player housing or minimal housing but they are nowhere near as enjoyable.

Actually, I completely agree here. SWG did look like a complete mess when all of a sudden the lush flora and jungles were all of a sudden urbanized. The ONLY way I can MAYBE see housing work, is to have it in a separate instance AWAY from the game world. In the meanwhile, let the real pros setup the housing in their world as they see fit (I.E. the game devs)

1) There is a benefits for owning a house. Like vendor discount in Lotro
2) You can craft / sell stuff in your house. Like in EQ2
3) Money gain instead of Money sink
Why would I buy a house and pay upkeep if there is no direct benefits for it? Check out the housing in Lotro, people buy them but you wont see people running around there.
Some ideas includes:
1) Rest exp / stat bonus for resting in house. So you can kill things faster, pvp better..etc
2) Limited number of housing. So people can sell their houses to other people ( but this idea may not be fair to newbies)
3) In the middle of the town instead of in the middle of nowhere.
Housing really gave you a sense of being in games. Sadly most developers don't realize this it has become all about hack and slash now. I stayed in UO for many years and still think about coming back because of its housing. I spent many and I mean many hours decorating and redecorating my houses in UO. AoC had a really good idea with the cities but they made it all about the guild and very little about the individual.
Why not play Sims Online. Seriously if I wanted to decorate and furnish my house I'd either play Sims Online if I couldn't afford to do so or actually do it in real life.

No one really sells stuff from their home anymore since there is a broker to sell stuff on.
Also how do you make money from "vitrual homes". From what I've seen they are just money sinks..aka luxury items for those who farm/buy to much gold.

Housing can be something great and be a playstyle in itself. Or rather crafting getting another purpose to people who love housing. With that you could add trading then too, so it could support 3 playstyles.

The only "virtual world" that matters in any MMO around to date is EVE. You can't sit there and suggest that WoW or EQ2 or Vanguard have worlds that matter when everything is so god damn static and unchanging. Your post would make sense if current fantasy MMO's were designed to allow players to own, destroy and change the world around them but they aren't.
In all honesty I'd take a very good storytelling mmoRPG over a grinding and raiding infested MMOrpg. At least with a good story telling MMO you can push the story forward and enact change by merely progressing the story even if your choices are limited on how you do so.

Ownership of a home in game and really going all out to decorate it is no different then killing X mob 10,000 times trying to get the shiny sword of ass wooping. It gives you a sense of accomplishment and ownership. Maybe that isn't something you have a interest in, but that doesn't lessen the fact that there are many people who do enjoy that aspect.
I know it has become the me generation, so if it isn't something I don't personally enjoy it doesn't have a place in the world.
