Many games have terms of service which prohibit the sale of in-game money by out-of-game vendors.
If the game didn't prohibit the sale of in-game money would you purchase it?
Feel free to comment on why you think that games should either allow or restrict the sale of in-game money?
It seems to me that there are both benefits and grievances for allowing the sale of in-game items. A game could probably retain more players from one audience if it allowed those players to make such transactions. And those players might benefit from acquiring a little extra money. New players into the game might be more likely to continue playing if they had better access to gear to help them in their journies.
However, the game balance might be disturbed by such provisions by making the game either too easy or to wealth friendly and cutting out the audience who plays on a more casual basis or plays on a tactical basis.
Personally, I think that purchasing in-game shouldn't be necessary to enjoy the gaming experience, but that it shouldn't be prohibited either. Of course, game mechanics would be necessary to prevent perma-camping of mobiles which drop popular items, and I am not insisting that instancing be used because I don't prefer instancing.

you forgot the depends. In EvE online people can trade Time-Codes for ISk. In WurmOnline the developers sell silver in their cash shop(done so). In second life you can freely trade money for cash(have sold Lindens).
As for buying money in a game you're not supposed to. Ofcourse not there's no reason to since that's how the game is balanced, and doing so messes with the economy badly.

I said yes but I meant yes in the sense that I actively participate in the Second Life economy. So, that means I buy SL lindens and use it to pay for virtual world items. If you mean asshats that buy farmed gold in a game where the attainment of gold is part of the leveling up scheme, no, those people suck and are down right cheaters.
I would, Because simplely I don't have enough to time to grind/farm for gold and stuff in game, I'd rather just buy it and have fun until I get banned

Hard to say. A very long time ago I would play a game like SoY and it was a pay per hour basis. Some players were paying many hundreds of dollars per month to play.
Then then monthly subscription came into being at TSN. More players joined.
Now F2P with RTM seems to be the future of business mmo business models. With a low upfront cost and the nature of impulse buying, there is an appeal to this for many players.
If at some point my choices are no game or great rtm game, I could see playing rtm.

Most people would buy in game money i know i have.
Casual players in any MMO out there NEED to in order to compete. Playign afew hours a day in any RAID type game that all games seem to follow now adays due to lack of imgination for more end game content.
Feed the Hardcore player screw the rest. So when that drop goes for sale on a merchant thats nice and stats loaded its high priced because the hardcore players now only the hardcore players can afford it thus leaving the casual player in the dust for such needed gear.
In Turn thats what kills game economy not buying money from someone in game.
Its still in game money it was farmed by someone and then handed to another toon. How does that translate to killing the economy?
The economy was killed by the hardcore raiders who farm all the hard items/gear that the casual player hasnt the time to dedicate 6-10 hours to a raid.
Thus in order to compete in a game that has PVP rewards sytem or heavily gear dependent most will buy money to get the items needed to compete.
Depends how much fun I'm having compared to how much fun I'll have if I spend $20 on a mountain of gold.
If a game isn't enjoyable, I quit within the hour.
If it is enjoyable, I make sure I'm still enjoying it a week later. If I am, then how much more would I enjoy it by parting with more money?
It's entirely subjective from game to game.
I'll spend 15-20 bucks a month in a flat fee. I won't spend another dime on anything else in an MMO.
Same here, I really do not see any reason for purchasing ingame money for real cash.
I do however choose to pay a monthly subscription to a MMORPG but it ends there with money spend for it.
And in all honesty I would become very bored even attempting to play a game if I would consider buying ingame money for real money.
I still have very limited time to actually play games in this genre but it never ever made me think "ohwell lets buy some gold to gain that extra boost" to me that would be totally a anti-gamers way.
To be clear if a game offers legit RMT then I am not against it but will most likely not play such game.

You cant buy the best gear with gold, you cant pay your way to being the best geared player, you cant buy even remotely good gear, compared to the high end one.
Therefore your logic is flawed, you also cant buy the best PvP gear, you have to earn it.

With gold you can buy mount, potions, repairs. Spending 30 minutes max, by day, was getting me enough gold for repairs, potions, cloth for bandages, so i could spend the rest of the day PvPing, or whatever.
Buying gold with your excuse, means you dont know how to play, or, believe you need help to be able to compete with others.

Hell yeah i bought it. Me and a few guildies bought 15g each in AoC and build our guild city with just 3 of us. Hmm lets see, waste 100's of hours farming or spend $6 on 15g.....
If I ever hit th point where I feel that I have to buy currency or items with RL cash then its probably time to go play another game.......I have never been an advocate of people who think they can buy their way through life.....Also whats the enjoyment if you just buy everything.....Games used to be about the gameplay and having fun now its all just keeping up with the Joneses.
I said no. Basically because if you were meant to be able to purchase in-game gold, wouldn't the dev's put an option like this on their homepage? Rather than let an outside source sell the in-game gold.

yes i played WOW and no i dont anymore. I played almost every big named MMo that has come done the line in the last 10-12 years. In the end its all the same go to pvp with average gear and those HARDCORE players wipe the floor with you in 5 secs. Where is the fun in that, let alone the want to try again?
Playing any game a few hours a day Around 15 hours a week doesnt buy you shit let alone get much in terms of gear.
Thus games unlike the drolling tards that play wow all day where items are BOP u can buy alot of gear ion other games so u can have some endgame fun and COMPETE. And dont give me the SKILLED card , for we all know pushing a mouse button over an icon isnt skill. Its all about the gear PERIOD.
If I want something I'd buy currency sure, I don't see the problem dev's have with it really because all the stuff being sold exists and it's not like people are hacking it onto the servers.... it's just like giving a game to your mate.

RMT is over a billion dollar a year industry. Potentially making more money then many mainstream games in revenues.
Unfortunately non-RMTers are becoming a minority in MMO's. More MMOs are adopting the free to play model mainly because...surprise...they make more money. Corps go where the money is, simple as that.
I use to crusade against RMT like many others but what is the point if companies will not even do it and join in?
Since UO in 1998, players have always demonstrated a willingness to RMT in some form or another in large numbers. I remember the first Jedi unlock in SWG was on Ebay within hours and sold for something like over a thousand dollars. (yeah, there was your noble vet community, they couldn't sell their sh*t fast enough on Ebay back when they allowed Vproperty sales)
I support RMT, but in no way does anyone ever *need* to buy gold to succeed. Any person with half a brain can get into any goldseller infested game and do just fine. Nobody cares about the low level crap (in fact, some of the stuff that used to cost a lot will now be given away), so the new player levels up quicker. Then, the new player treasure hunts until they find one thing of value and whalaa, they are participating on par in the "super inflated" economy.
People who think they *need* to buy gold (or whatever currency) to succeed are suckers, pure and simple.

That'd be the easy way out and I can't play that way.
I voted 'no', but I have before, long ago, however I would never do so again. The long and short of it is, I do not think it should even be necessary or desired to play an MMOG. I also think that MMOG companies should take a hard-line approach to currency and item sale for real life cash. It has a detrimental effect on games.

Only if the game is boring and I plan to leave it as soon as I see entire path from the beginning to the high end content... Just like to finish things that have started, and also to see as much as possible MMOs
Where themepark games try to hide that they are copying WOW, games like Mortal Online and Darkfall make no attempt to hide their inspiration

It depends. I have never purchased in game gold for $, but I am sure i would if it was offered by the game itself. I hate the bot gold farmer spammers that constantly spam gold sites and refuse to buy from them just because i find them annoying in game. Now if I knew the money was going to the developers to improve the game I like, i would much rather have in game cash for sale by games than item shops. I will never buy in game items from games, hell I refuse to even play games with an item shop. But if all they sold was in game cash instead so that all players still had the opportunity to gain all game items without buying them I surely would play their game and I would buy gold from them as well. I would even buy gold and pay a monthly fee if they are giving me a quality game. Hell if that is what it takes to get better games, so be it. I think games themselves selling gold helps reduce the number of gold farmers in game because competing with the game itself would be too much competition for them. I actually like this idea, it allows players who have time to spend earning it in game to do so, and players who have real $ instead of time to be able to compete as well.
I play WoW atm. I havent bought gold before, but now that i'm working full-time I'm finding it pretty hard to slap together enough for my epic flying mount, buying armor patches and enchants for my gear, crafting it is all sapping my money, and i pvp 90% of the time. I'm making a new warrior for WotLK and i plan to pvp with him too, no raiding , so getting another 5000gold is just a pain in the butt.
I'm seriously considering buying some gold, looking for a good site, dont post any here ofcourse .
What concerns me more about is that all player's stuffs are kept in the server. The server should take full responsibility to keep all player's treasures safet. If the server roll back? The game need to consider about possibly loss came from the game side.
If a game involved real money, for instance, use real money to buy game coin then the game also need to provide service allow player to change coin back to cash. By then, I think there is no problem to buy game coin or change coin back to cash.
But such game maybe categoize as mature game or even gambling as well.
