Beta. One of the worst things to happen to MMOs.

From what I can tell, closed invite betas and open betas are some of the worst things to happen to MMOs recently. I have seen so many posts about people pissed off about not being invited to beta, or getting mad at Mythic for not releasing the dates of the open beta. For some reason people have started to think of being in a beta as an entitlement of buying the game. For some reason people don't understand that it's not "preview time". It's called beta for a reason. I really wish that MMOs would go back to the way betas are supposed to be, because when people start getting mad at companies for not inviting them to a closed beta, it's a sad sad day, and that has been happening for a while.

I understand what you are saying OP and I agree with you for the most part. However, mmorpgs have too big of a player-base to go back to the way betas were before.
Agreed. Id also like to add that people arent really pissed at the company, theyre pissed that they didnt get to get into it early. Fans are like that, I know if I was into a particular baseball team, and they only let so many people in before the game for autographs and what not, Id be disappointed if I didnt get in.
I believe those are only the vocal minority. Most of them know what is BETA and are really doing their best helping out with the game.
Maybe for new mmo, the dev can come out with a way to know which players are really trying to help or just wana play free games, and ban them immeditaly for a time period, even after the game is release... This way those that have not gone into beta that just want to play for free will think twice about it...

I have seen multiple posts where people are like "stupid Mythic, i didn't get invited! i'm going to cancel my preorder!"

One of the things that bothers me is the forums flooded with threads like, "Got my invite! Yes!" Or "Didn't get my invite, WTF?" All I'm saying is who the f--- cares? And why do you need an entire message board to say it? I'm glad to know some people are getting their invites, otherwise I don't care. Can't this crap be consolidated?
I know this issue has less weight than the ones mentioned here, but I still wanted to bring it up.

Offtopic: I havent got my invite yet.
Though, I not only want my invite cause I was told I will get one (CE) but because I actually want to test and help make the game better. Even if I dont get an invite though (even after being told I would and I meet the system reqs) I wont get pissed. Its pointless. I bought the CE because I have faith in the game and want the goodies. Not because I wanted in the beta (CB or OB), to me thats just silly.
I'm probably not going to preorder. Not because I don't have faith in Mythic- I love them more than is healthy to love a developer (but don't call me a fanboy. I can admit they have made mistakes). But I don't even know if i'll get to play Warhammer, based on my internet connection I won't get to play any current MMOs until I get a better one. Also I preordered Vanguard and wooh, was that a mistake.

UO and EQ had large public Beta testings.
But I do agree that the people who thinkg beta access is an entitlement are fools.

I can understand that. I have never pre-ordered any game (consol or PC) untill WAR. I wasnt part of the whole Vanguard debacle or AoC (never played either) cause I was smart and waited. I just hope I dont get burned here or I wont feel so smart anymore
To some of us its really cool to be invited but we dont get mad if we dont get invited.
But the problem is alot of us bought the CE edition and were told we were going to get an invite because of it... It doesnt make me mad if theres a low chance of getting in...It bothers me when a company tells you your in basically as long as you meet spec's..... BUT SE guys are getting in before you?. If us guys that have preordered the CE dont get in we have every right to be pissed if the SE guys get in.

99.9% of all beta testers (doesnt matter of which game) dont help improving the game, they use the beta as a free demo version. The Devs should use the money for paying professionel testers instead. So I agree with the OP.
To the OP
Alot of the threads at the moment are from European or UK fans of the game, who are being shafted by GOA, not Mythic, which is causing alot of resentment towards the game as a whole.
For those not in the EU, GOA is the EU company who are dealing with WAR over this side. They released CE preorders 6 months ago, with the promise of "Guaranteed Open Beta Access", and "Will recieve the same as the US!".
However, 6 months later, and 4 weeks before launch, they have not even provided anywhere to enter the preorder keys, they are not offering closed beta access for CE (which the US now has), and they are saying "the press release of Sept 18th was a massive surprise to us and now we have to try and see what we can do", which sounds to the EU/UK that we may not get launched at the same time, and may not get the Beta access we paid for (over here in the UK we had to physically purchase the preorder in store for the first month).
So, its not so much anger at not being allowed to Beta Test, but anger at GOA for not delivering what we paid for, and not giving us any updates for 6 months, whilst the US gets to enter their keys, and now play in Closed Beta and Open Beta.
GOA's response to the outcry from the EU/UK fans has been "we will meet with Mythic some time next week and see what we can do", which just smacks to most people of "meh, we'll get around to it when we can be bothered".
Especially as every forum is full of people from across the pond shouting how they got in, and we have to use those forums to get information, just brings even more resentment, and cries of "Im cancelling my preorder then, and I want my money back".
And that, OP, is why there are lots of angry beta threads popping up.

types of beta testers i hate....
1) players that ask if they will wipe at the end of beta, then complain about a wipe. (happens more so in o-pen beta)
2) ppl that rush thru the content and never give any feedback on how to improve the game or things they found wrong while playing.
3) players that complain constantly making new threads about issues the devs have already let the testers know they are working on.
4) ppl that think release will be the exact same thing as beta...this does ring true for some games though =p

one last thing. I do however think that beta is a good thing just because even with all the groups of players i don't like there is the group that go out of their way to test and give feedback which generally helps with a games success.
Agree. Betas are a privilege not a right but when the company makes a statement that CEs will be invited folks get panicky if OTHERS post that they are in already.
One MAJOR problem is that folks don't READ. Standard pre-orders get into OB. CE get into CB and are getting invites now. I see a lot of Standard folks crying because they aren't getting invites right now.
Later this week, folks with Standard pre-orders will be able to make Master accounts and enter their OB keys/special items. There is NO OB date set, only speculation (unless something has changed in the last few hours, if so my apologies).
If folks took the time to carefully read and spent a few minutes sifting through the official posts (not reading one individuals' hearsay and taking it as gospel) there would be less unhappy people in line.
Don't kid yourself. At this point, beta is a free preview of the game, and beta "testers" aren't really needed to do anything more than play the game.
True. There are really only a handful of folks who are blowing their gaskets over beta invites. Consider the number of posts about it VS the number of people who are actually in or awaiting to get into beta. It's a very very small percentage.
