The most fun thing in WAR seems to be the city sacking and the killing of the other teams king. But i always wondered how long it would take to get to that point. Now im not entirely sure how the whole RvR works, but this is how i understand it.
Lets say i spend my whole day fighting, helping my realm work towards the enemy city. I spend hours doing this, working hard, but our team just can't get that final push we need to win. So after hours of playing i decide to call it a day. But what if just after i leave my team breaks through the defense and gets all the rewards fo winning. But i would get nothing, even though i spent the whole day playing.
So my question is. Do you have to be there at the final moment the king is killed to get rewards?

Obviously.
i just killed Karl Franz last night , took about ... NDA
The King is an Instanced Fight your Realm has to open through various RvR & PvE events inside the city (if you manage to win the initial surge). The king can be killed multiple times per side but only once by your personal account PER Sacking. Cities are supposed to be under Siege for up to 24 hours before the other Realm gets help getting the city back (this is an estimated time since MJ wasn't sure it was final or not the last time he spoke about it on WHA). I gather you'll always get another chance.
It can take up to a month or more (estimated since it depends on how good your realm is and how bad the other side is) to actually get to the city sacking all the requirements your realm must meet are pretty stiff and require your entire realm's constant help.
There's no real time line on any of it honestly since its a triggered server event. And How logn it takes to down a king is always variable depending on what 24 man raid group goes up against him.
I can't give any absolute answers on times, obviously because it will all depend (and I haven't played the game yet, lol). But I have heard the devs say it will take "months" to get to the point where a city is suseptable to attack. This was also before they eliminated four of the cities. I imagine it will take longer than originally expected to get to that point due to the new game mechanic.
The way it used to be if Chaos conquered Order, they could sack Altdorf after taking Tier 4. Now, because of the city switch, 2 out of the 3 Tier 4 pairings have to be completed by the same realm before Altdorf or The Inevitable City can be sacked. So instead of just the Empire falling (in the above example), the High Elves or the Dwarves would have to fall before Empire recovered to unlock Altdorf.
Then Altdorf would have to be sieged through PvP (RvR). Then the public quests unlock and Destruction has to take both the Temple of Sigmar and the Bright Wizard College before the king fight unlocks.
Once the king fight unlocks, it takes a 24 man raid to even stand a chance, and the devs said he still pwns in those cases.
So, I guess it takes a lot of time, experience and skill to kill the king. As it should.
Final note: Since it might take months to unlock the city siege, the city siege time limit will probably a day or more, and the king fight itself will probably be unlocked for a significant amount of time to give everybody a chance to get a piece of the action.
