Zen,
If you make the categories broad enough you can as the same question (how are they different?) of any two games, football and chess, for example. That doesn't make the question (or its answer) at all meaningful.
Sure, those 4 categories cover the vast majority of EVE, just as they cover (as you pointed out) the vast majority of other MMO's. So what?
By making such broad comparisons you ignore everything that makes EVE unique.
If your statement had any validity at all, why in the world would we need more than one MMO game? It is not because EVE is just like every other MMO that I play it rather than another MMO, it is because EVE is (IME) a very unique game, and it is the game that suits me best of all the games out there.
That's why I play.
I hope to do resub to EVE at some point in the future. And if you like PvP, try different aspects of PvP. Have you tried solo pirating? How about joining a mercenary corp? Or factional warfare? Or a pirate corp? What about anti-pirating? What about 0.0? What about joining a low-sec industrial corp and providing protection for miners/haulers?
I could go on and on about other aspects of PvP that you might try, only drawing on my rather limited experience and perspective. I could still go on, and I am sure others could add considerably to the list I started.
If you prefer some other aspect of EVE, industry, for example, you could compile a similar list of jobs for that as well.
Sure, 4 broad categories, but each one hides a multitude of jobs and tasks that various people find fun. Maybe on your return, you'll find a few for yourself. Who knows?
I was just qouting from my own experience above. I'm happy so many people resort to name calling and pseudo profanity to express themselves, it really makes your argument more factually sound. Well I am the only person to respond to you, so please show me where called you a name or use any "pseudo profanity". That's right, I didn't.
Number one... the four things you end up doing in this game are- Mine, Missions, Craft, and PvP... that's it. How is that different from any other MMO out there? The graphics are good, especially with the new expansion, but the skills over time system still sucks. I will not play this game for that reason alone. Well yes you do have all of those in near every other mmo out there but this has no meaning whatsoever. Its like saying an orange is a fruit just like an apple therefore both are the same. Eve differentiates itself in many other ways like the fact that it's mining, crafting, PvP and missions to a lesser extent all factor into the economy which very few mmos do. Eves skill system is awesome. You can train any and every skill if you choose. You can train offline so you don't get left behind when you go on vacation or miss a few days. Id rather not be forced into grinding mobs to level. In Eve i set my skill and go play the game how I want to. Also I've been in guilds and seen people who've PvPed... the one who wins repeatedly is the one who's been playing longer. If you end up beating another guild with more tenured members, it's because you swarmed them with a million freaking newbs. LoL, PvP fights are won by experienced players because they know how to fit their ships and how to use the environment. Vet players just have game experience which helps them win. Vets don't get tense or freeze up. The death penatly in this game does suck... I mean really suck. Nothing like losing a ship you've spent a month saving up money for and finding out the insurance doesn't give you crap back, of course if you forget to clone, you might as well just hang up your suspenders and go join the Ogres, 'cause "there aint no comin' back" (that's my crow qoute). Don't fly what you can't afford to lose. The people who are ranting against me have time on their side. They'll say all this crap because they have an investment in the game and don't want to see the new membership drop, otherwise who will they use as cannonfodder? I mean that qoute about using the war as a lesson in PvP for the new members is priceless. It shows the arrogance and superiority that's rampant in this game. You aint shit if your character isn't at least a 2006 vintage... So yell and scream and bitch about what I said, but this was, and is, my experience with this game. The reason it's so popular is because the company advertises up the yin yang and most people find it hard to leave after they've invested so much time into the game. Quit being so melodramatic. For most people it's like an addict kicking a drug, the only way they'll admit there's a problem is when it's finally to painful to keep doing the drug, otherwise they'll defend it until they either die from it or suffer some kind of consequence that prevents them from continuing. Drug addict. Actually I don't play Eve right now but I will be back probably with the next expansion. Is this game any different from any other MMO out there? NO... the mechanics are exactly the same. The skills over time system, the massive death penatly, and the inability to "TRULY" compete with anyone who has been in the game for a significantly longer period of time, is the reason I have not come back, and probably will never come back. My personal opinion, go pick a game that's not so time intensive... this one is really going to keep you from the real world. I personally started playing Shot Online because it gives me an MMO experience, yet I can be done with it in 30 minutes. Just so you know opinions can be wrong and you are indeed wrong. Also Earth and Beyond was 10 times funner than Eve... and I still boycot EA because they canceled the game when it was still popular. Zenren
think the reason some people play EVE for so many hours a day is because they like it.
Myself, family and work commitments keep me from playing more than 12-14 hours per week. But guess what! My skills train at exactly the same rate as someone who plays for 8 hours per day.
If you ask me, EVE is THE MOST casual friendly game around.
Also, when I am playing, I grind if I want to, not because I have to. So much better than the average MMO where you have to grind as many hours per day as your friends if you don't want to fall behind.
In case anyone cares, I realize it's been two years since I played EVE. I'm going to resubscribe if I can. I'll give it a little time and tell you if I still think it's worthwhile. could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
After more than a year of playing, I still find EVE tosses me new gameplay experiences. Most of my first year in EVE was spend in 0.0, and I got involved in some amazing fights in the Smash-Roadkill wars. But I took a few months off for AOC (oof) and when I returned I thought I'd join a nice, well organized, peaceful empire corp. Within 2 weeks of joining one of our members (with one month of experience) somehow stole from a wreck (allegedly) and then smack talked (one line) one of the more violent and high level Merc Corps who promptly war-dec'd us, demanding an apology and a bunch of ISK to stop the war. We thought it over, discussed it, and decided it was a great chance to teach our new members a bit about PVP combat and took the fight to them. Now, I'm not going to kid you, they certainly had the upper hand in the first few fights however we did manage to draw some blood and probably break even in ship losses from a dollar perspective. (and we learned alot from observing their combat techniques against us) The fight (and fun) continues against a corp that has players all with 1-4 years experience, and yet, we can hold our own (well, sort of) despite most of player base being pretty new. Will we win? No, probably not, but we'll fight the good fight as long as we can, because that's what EVE is really all about, and everyone agreed we've had a ton of fun so far. We've rallied together and dragged a slew of miners/industrialists out of their PVE shells and given them a taste of blood. EVE is what you make of it, and while I've found it boring at times, in bouncing around I keep finding new things to do and battles to fight. I've busted POS's in Armor tanked Ravens, run in Steath bomber corps that gate camped key enemy pipelines, Battled major alliances and fought along side Titans and Dreadnaughts (and even got doomsdayed once) Now its empire battles against hardened merc corp.... who knows what else lies ahead this year, but I'm looking forward to finding out.
You wouldn't happen to be from Stormfront J.U.N.T.A. would you?
Let's be honest here about the fact that you cannot really achieve character improvement through commitment and dedication in EvE.
Getting somewhere skillwise takes long and requires patience. EvE is a lot less addictive than most other MMOs around. You can't boost yourself by grinding mobs/raidbosses/dungeons 24/7, and even the things you can achieve take a LOT longer than in any other modern MMO. Or like an online-guide put it unwillingly "You might want to take a month off after reaching level 3 missions to max out your learning skills"
In other games you can reach maxlevel and some high end gear within this very month (and be bored with the whole game because you've seen everything there is within 3 months).
Plus, the PvP (and combat in general) is deep, complex and - mostly through the high stakes - exciting. But if you're looking for action packed "storm the front"-pvp, EvE does not provide at - all. So if someone's judging PvP by the rate of fast paced action and rewarding "boom headshot" moments, EvE's a perfect F.
I'm not putting any form of PvP or game style over another, I just want to state that everyone complaing about "EvEs bland PvP" is very right, and very wrong. It depends extremely on what one is expecting from videogame combat.
Meridion
PS Don't make a mistake and underestimate fast paced combat, e.g. in World of Warcraft or any FPS of your choice. Though armies of people say "lol if i played as much as mr nolife there I'd pwn just as much" - untrue. There is such a thing as talent in fast paced videogames, reaction, improvisation, etc., just as there is talent in logic (which probably comes in handy while playing EvE)

Yea i agree its a matter of taste really some will like EvE's slower paced game play with brief spurts of heart pounding action, And some will prefer a faster paced game like Everquest 2 or WoW for example.
In the end as long as everyone is enjoying there chosen MMO i dont think it really matters.

Well anyway i hope you find a mmo you enjoy and i end this by saying, "Have fun".

Many MMORPG's are like a house. You as a buyer walk through them, look at all the bells and whistles and nod saying, "This is a nice house. I think I'll stay." Many times, these features get old and you look to sell the one you have to buy another with different or more features. World of Warcraft has been my house for many years. I like it, though wanted to expand my real estate...see what's out there.
I came to EVE. I was puzzled at first because all I saw was a grass field. As I walked around, I was given a hammer, nails, a big stack of wood, pipes, wiring, and paint. Does your environment affect you or do you affect your environment?
I disagree I have a very short attention span and ive been enjoying eve.
Ive been playing for 3 days but those 3 days been a blast.
Eve kinda reminds me of the model games or the old complex pen and paper games(usualy mech ones).
I love combat but ive spent more time decking out my ship and shoping/traveling for the best deals.
Its a real sci-fi game instead of a game with a sci-fi theme. Alot of thinking and cacluation goes into ur weapon systems.
First day found a Corp with a bunch of trials so were building it up from the ground. Were all different types of players , some are buisness/economy driven, others crafting and a few like me combat and one whose into management. In other words a sandbox game.
Still learning the combat but from what Ive seen its like most MMOG combat. You got ur debuffs, buffs, healing, DD and AOE. Its a rush when you got 3 targerts and ur micro managing ur weapons and accesories between em. Not to mention remembering optimal distance of each weapon and keeping away from theres.
Also love exploring and eve gots that in spades. While I was guarding one of our miners I found a old gate that took me to some robots kept. It kept leading to more and more gates taking me to harder and harder robots. Till I had to run for my life.
The way someone perceives Eve as a trial / new player comes right back to what they're looking for.
Sounds obvious, yet it's funny how seldom people take a step back and look at the situation objectively enough to notice.
A two-week trial is plenty of time for anyone to figure out if they like Eve or not. Because they're experiencing the game that Eve is in that time.
CCP aren't out to "trick" anyone playing the trial into thinking the game is something it isn't, nor should they. They're giving the player a chance to check it out and see if it's for them.
Beyond that... here's what I notice...
Someone looking for a more casual, faster paced gameplay experience where they can jump in and almost from the start begin to see achievements and rewards come their way is going to log into Eve looking for that kind of experience. And they're not going to find it.
Why? Because Eve isn't that kind of game. All the talk of PvP, mining, manufacturing, corp wars - all those things that they can get into and really do well at down the road means nothing because they're not experiencing anything that's exciting them "right now".
A four week trial isn't going to change that. It's not that the game is "failing to get them hooked".. It's that it's simply not the kind of game that's going to hook them in the first place.
Eve is simply not the game for them. And that's fine.
On the other hand...
Someone coming to Eve who looks at the game, digs through the different menus, reads up on the ways you develop your character, how you can build up fleets of ships, run corps and so forth... is going to look at that and see nothing but *opportunities*.
There's the potential of all these options they have before them... all the stuff that they can do, goals they can work toward, all while developing their character the way they wish.
They don't care that it takes time to get to where they'd like to go... because to them, the fun is in the experience of getting there.
For that type of person... they might not even need 3 full days to decide they like it; because it's exactly what they were looking for.
In short... for someone looking for a casual-friendly, "log in, do something, log out in 30 minutes" exprience... Eve is not going to be for you.
For someone who's looking for a game world that's wide-open, that provides a ridiculous amount of things you can do and any number of ways you can choose to develop your character and make your mark in the universe - even though it won't happen in a week, or maybe even a month or more - Eve is a giant buffet.
At least that's how I see it.
:-p

I played Eve for about two weeks and I feel so bored with it. I don't like the concept of driving a ship around space and mining all the time. The pvp is very bland compared to many games. Just My two cents
EDIT; The graphics are amazing though
If you dont like the concept of driving a ship in space, why even play it in the first place
I think the title of this thread is basically begging for a flame war. The truth is not everyone likes everything. I personally thin WoW is a biggest pile of dog doody in MMOs right now. I think Age of Conan is boring tripe and find Lotro to have a great plot but crap for support and development.
For me the same old, which 99% of MMOs are is dull. EVE for it's steep learning curve and slow reward approach is actually very different in every way from the standard fair of MMO.
I have no doubt that to many it is boring but I also have no doubt that it has a inovative game system and unqiue approach. For some this is a great game and for others not.

Eve doesn't need to be 'boring' as you describe it. In time, you will get tired of losing ships to established groups of players though and the alternative is boring. If you stick with it, it will get to be where you are a part of those established groups and you either pick on the loners or stand off against other established groups, watch events unfold you can't control and get sick of the repetition in that but don't blame Eve because that's the dilema of all Video Games. MMO's become like a console game. It's just more of the same. You can only unlock so many 'hidden' levels before you realize it's the same one you did last time and you can only add so much 'new' content before it feels like the same crap with new paint.
I just left Eve and I won't hate on it more than this because I am not in any MMOs right now. They are all giving me that same old, same old feeling. It just happened to happen while I was playing Eve. Just another MMO.
i hear you dude i thought it would be fun but first the tutorial was like 4 hours long then the only thing you can do is go mine rocks and sell them till you got enough to buy a better ship. and you train skills by being logged on the skills take 5 hours to level up. then i thought maybe the PvP is fun nope wow i can click then wait till one of us is blowen up. EVE = waste of time

The truly sad part is that someone with no knowledge could read your post and think you actually played the game. if you did play it then you are outright lying and if you did not, oops still a lie.
First the tutorial took me all of about 90 minutes to complete. The ship I left the tutorial with could run basic missions as well as was able to mine, cargo run, the limits where not that great. As for skill trianing to get into some of the more advanced levels it might take 5 hours, I have some serious advanced skills that need DAYS to train, however basic skills mostly train in under and hour for the first level.
If you where playing PVP fresh out of the tutorial you are just p[lain silly, of course it would suck. The same can be said for ANY game other there.
If you do not like EVE that is cool, not everyone likes verything but if you do not like it there is no reason to lie about it to justify your dismay. Just admit the game is not for you and move on. Misinformation however is not cool.

waste of time for you for many it's one very good sandbox game where your free to shape the universe .
of course eve does not hold your hand and tell you what you do but it's a great game for the right person
am a beta eve player so when i see posts like this it boggles my mind how quick kids are to bash games
if you dont like fine we understand but dont call it a waste of time because it isnt maybe runescape was better for you ??

Also love exploring and eve gots that in spades. While I was guarding one of our miners I found a old gate that took me to some robots kept. It kept leading to more and more gates taking me to harder and harder robots. Till I had to run for my life.
Anyways Eve isnt a shallow Game.
Eve == chess
WoW/War/EQ == checkers.
My take is this...

If you dont like the concept of driving a ship in space, why even play it in the first place
pew pew lazors!
Dont be so defensive over a silly game just my 2 cents.

I couldn't get into Eve. i tried hard, but I find it very lacking in many aspects especially pve. It could use a lot more.
I found most of my time was flying towards jumpgates, flying towards missions, and mining rocks.
I was also turned off by the skill system. I would like to actually feel like I'm earning these things in-game. Kind of took a lot of it out for me.
It's just not a newbfriendly game, but I can see why so many like it. The endgame pvp looks awesome but I never got that far.

i hear you dude i thought it would be fun but first the tutorial was like 4 hours long then the only thing you can do is go mine rocks and sell them till you got enough to buy a better ship. and you train skills by being logged on the skills take 5 hours to level up. then i thought maybe the PvP is fun nope wow i can click then wait till one of us is blowen up.

Two weeks ??
I played it two hours and realized it sucked, what took you so long?
