Why does anyone on these forums care about WoW?

If you like WoW, great, play it. If you dont like WoW, great, play WAR or something else. Why does anyone on these forums care about WoW? What difference does it make? If WAR is a good game, it will succeed. If its a bad game, it will fail. Either will occur regardless of WoW. Its not like both games are coming out at the same time and people need to be convinced to play one or the other. The games are not mutually exclusive. You can play one, the other, both, or neither.

I played it for sometime and it was a decent game, just gets stale after the 3 year mark. However, the WoW folks can find some similarities in the two so be it. They are just looking for some new fun as well.

Whether a game succeeds is quite frankly based on the competition. Doom1 was the only game people bought at one point because there was no competition. I don't know what logic you use to make a purchase but the rest of us want the best game out regardless of its name. If WoW fixed all the issues directly addressed by WAR (gear dependance, weak RvR etc.) then people would go back to WoW and WAR would drift to nothing as who wants to play a game thats worse? A game cannot succeed solely based on whether its current users like it, if its not the best game out then there wont be enough money around to keep the quality of the expansions high.
You cannot simply ignore the competition because people talking about it bores you and Mythic cannot fund a large scale mmo based on your subscription alone.
<edit> and WOTLK is coming out within a few months of WAR so yes they are in direct competition :P

The only people who will stick with WoW are addicts, people who have poor taste in games and people who haven't heard of WAR

I disagree. Just look at AoC. It sold a whole lot of copies, regardless of WoW. And everyone quitting AoC is not doing so because of WoW, but because of the problems AoC has (lack of endgame mostly). WAR will do the same, it will sell well regardless of WoW and it will shine or fail on its own merits, and not what WoW does.

I don't know why people are so infatuated with WoW. Playing it for more than 3 seconds makes your eyes bleed rainbows. The only thing it has really done for the world is reduce the collective IQ of gamers by about 100 points. And it wasn't all that great to begin with so by the time the game finally dies I expect that we'll be at the low end of the retarded category (collectively of course).

A simple history for me, I was with WoW at beta (after DAoC and EQ), and the first 7 months. I had a fun time playing, then Blizzard made some changes that affected the way PvP was managed, and my life became a constant gankfest on my server. I moved on and I had some fun playing Vanguard, D&D online, LotRO, EVE Online, EQ2, City of Heroes/Villians, etc.. Now here I am looking forward to WAR with a more ballanced PvP mechanic, a cool RvR gameplay mechanic, and a reasonable restriction on high level players ganking lowbies. I don't think WAR is a WoW killer, and I don't care if it isn't. I plan to have fun playing it regardless.

and there is nothign wrong wtih that.. and with saying that I would have no problem going back to WoW every now and then to "hit it" but not stay there.
The only people who will stick with WoW are the people who like it for whatever reason. Bless them.
More games out = more competition = more goodies for all.
I swear I'm gonna be pissed if I have to reopen a WoW account just to help keep it alive so I can get regular updates, new content, and expansions for the games I actually do play!

Because it's where a lot of people came from. And for some it took their MMO cherry and they're getting all weird over considering sleeping with the new woman.
They're done fumbling about with the teenager with a mouth full o metal and are getting ready to move onto a hot young milf. Just working out if they can pluck up the courage is all. Encourage and enable them don't hate them for where they've come from
World of Warcraft is a great game. Anyone who says it isn't simply went into the game with a chip on their shoulder.
I used to play UO, in FELLUCA....and yet I liked WoW. It's my second favorite MMO after UO.
Any and every game gets boring after awhile. Especially 3 years. I got bored of UO quite often too.
WAR will be a nice change, but we all will eventually move on to another game after WAR has been out for quite some time.
