Just watched it... wow. That is sad. It IS vaporware, you cannot justify that horrid video as 'good,' What a joke.
"It IS vaporware"... Do you even know what vaporware is? How can you watch a gameplay video and call it vaporware? That is an oxymoron to say the least.
You are watching a GAMEPLAY video while calling the game vaporware...
You people never cease to amaze me.
Something is vaporware until it actually comes out. Videos don't mean anything. There have been videos for Duke Nukem Forever, yet the game is still vaporware.
That's not true. Vaporware means there is no game. Darkfall has proven there IS a game. Now whether or not you people are going to like the game is another story, but it isn't vaporware.
Nice try though.
actually, vaporware does not mean what you think it means, it seems. just the first part (in red) is sorta telling...
Vaporware is a somewhat derogatory term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar software/hardware product. The term implies unwarranted optimism, an as yet unannounced abandonment of a project, or sometimes even deception; that is, it may imply that the announcer knows that product development is in too early a stage to support responsible statements about its completion date, feature set, or even feasibility. However, most vaporware would not be considered a hoax since the makers have a genuine intention to create their product, even if it ultimately never materializes. Products with unspecified release dates or long development times that outwardly demonstrate regular, verifiable progress in production are not normally labelled vaporware.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
The videos on youtube dont do it justice. I was blown AWAY!! woot!
I saw the downloaded video, all 600+Mb...
If you infact got "blown away" with that... i pity you.
What is the problem with the graphics exactly? I thought they were good... not the best around, but good. Anyway, I will never understand those who think graphics > gameplay. To me it just makes no sense... we are talking about a game and not a damn movie! Bah... to each its own I guess.
so then, you're still playing UO? it's graphics AREN'T that great; but it does have a TON of content/abilities/etc that no other MMOs have.
better than that -- MUDs... there were/are some MUDs out there that have a ton of things people are hoping darkfall has.
otherwise... your graphics comment is hollow.

it really didnt look that great, only way im gonna buy it if it can sustain a reasonable sub count for a month or 2.
Agree, this one is gonna need a strong, solid launch to prove itself.
I see this going the route of EVE. A niche game with a loyal, yet small playerbase that can expand over time. Its one thing to build an MMO in seven years with a small team, its a totally different beast when you have lots of players shouting of fixes/nerfs/suggested addition and all going in every direction possible. A solid launch is needed but a firm path of playstyle and where they intend to go in the future is a must.

The Trolls are just grasping at straws now, a decent game may have finally arrived where the developers have a grasp on reality and the sense to drop the features and eye cndy that adds Zero value.
A big well done to the DF Devs.

what exactly.. EXACTLY in my post is trolling? someone made a statement that graphics aren't important. if that is true, there ARE existing games that have wonderful gameplay and a plethora of features, but the graphics aren't great.
are the words i used too large? do not be all defensive and making up garbage in a reply in order to justify something that, by definition... IS vaporware. especially when my post had nothing to do with the game one way or the other.

Graphics don't bother me too much - I played UO. I'm more interested in gameplay, and from the video it looks to me as though the past decade (give or take) of development time has focussed on making a deep, *fun* game. I look forward to seeing what happens next.
Take a look at this. No question its an older generation engine but who cares? The gameplay looks fun. www.youtube.com/watch
take a look at uo, the graphics aren't that great; but it has WAY more features implemented and currently in use than any other mmo currently on the market.
what's wrong with uo, if graphics don't matter? why can't someone be playing uo while waiting however many more years for darkfall? that's where these darkfall "fanbois" lose me.

Well, according to your own definition DF isn't VW:
"Products with unspecified release dates or long development times that outwardly demonstrate regular, verifiable progress in production are not normally labelled vaporware."
Aventurine haven't even now published a releasedate.

Noticed that with the cannons in the coast line fight. Cannons would "pop" in when created then "pop" out when destroyed. Nothing really showed any kind of damage when hit, stuff would just sink into the sea or disappear all together.

talk about grasping at straws... "or" does not mean "and". darkfall has certainly NOT exhibited the ability to outwardly demonstrate regular, verifiable progress in production...
but good way to pick out one part of one sentence out of that nicely-sized paragraph, most of which paragraph does point itself directly at darkfall (via wikipedia's definition)... this defintion doesmake everyone cat-calling "vaporware trolls" to seem, at the very least, to not have a comprehension of what vaporware actually means.
what regulare, verifiable progress is darkfall exhibiting? a one-time item is not the definition of the aformentioned.
this honestly isn't rocket science. keep it in the darkfall forums if you don't want people going "wtf" at the silliness in this thread.

Basically the video was just something to feed us fanboys. It is just a small vid of gameplay. it is not suppose to teach you anything, its not suppose to be some cinematic to make people go wow. Everything is staged to just show us a few things in the game. Im sorry they dont have some annoying guy to explain everything they show you in videos like they have in WAR. I dunno who posted this in the MMORPG forums, but damnit.
You need to take a step back and realize the game taught quite a bit for both new people and long time followers.
Momentum is accounted for in weapons damage. This means jumping down and hitting an opponent will lead to more damage depending on how high you are. The archery bits were it took six arrows to kill an armored player when the archers were at the same height as the target vs the archer in the tree tops one shotting people below him clarifies this point.
Instead of siege weapons like trebuchets and ballistas we are getting magical hovertanks.
When your health hits 0 you aren't dead yet. You are left lying on the ground until someone finishes you off or heals you.
Both players and mobs have to deal with collision detection.
Shadows and lighting work in way that stealth via camoflouge is realisticly possible.
Swinging a melee weapon appears to not be as much of an issue when your friends or enemies besides your main target are next to you.
The game provides naval warfare, siege warfare, and mounted combat right out of the box.
The gravitational effects of spells are very generous.
Minimalist UI approach means you are playing the game and not the UI.
The speed of smaller ships doesn't seem effective enough against the larger firepower and health of larger ships.
Large ships have a rediculously high turning speed.
Characters yell and say words when they are being butchered.

Grasping at straws ?
According to the definition games that haven't provided a releasedate, isn't labeled VW.
The thing is, there is no good defintion of VW. You can sit here all day trying to design a definition that makes DF VW while not making your favorite upcoming MMO VW as well.

These nay-sayers are unbelievable. For the last few years they are screaming that ANY video would be good but that "the developers can't even do that".. now a video is out, a much longer video than any other developer has ever provided, but now that is still not good enough. Now the complaint is "the video doesn't prove that any of the promised features are actually in the game"?! So please explain how then does a video provided by any other developer prove anything? Especially as all other videos are usually cinematic BS, or very short snippets of game play. The Darkfall video has ONLY game play.
I will agree the character movement, building collapse- sinking ship animations are really not great. The landscape looks decent, however. What you forgot though is that they are aiming for high numbers of players in PvP battles. You cannot do that with AoC graphics currently. In fact I suppose you guys are the same morons that complain that AoC has too high system requirements? And why do you even need AoC graphics? WoW's ridiculous cartoony graphics sucks big time yet it doesn't seem to bother the ~400,000 or whatever current subscribers.
This type of game has never been done successfully before. Obviously if they have some success they will definitely try to upgrade the graphics and animations - technology allowing. But for now the features they want to give us is the issue!
None of you nay-sayers obviously want this type of game to succeed and you will argue and argue until the actual game is out. Then when it is out you will say "but the features are not really what was promised" - whether they are or not. I hate WoW, but I don't post BS about them, or any other game I don't like. You guys are really pathetic.
Those talking about graphics being the most important factor should stick to single player games. If I want good graphics I can play Mass Effect.
I have tried every MMO since UO and The Realm and sadly most are the same generic crap level grind with a bit of PvP bolted on at the end. The only MMO I have played for long time is Eve for nearly 5 years. I enjoyed DAoC for 6-9 months which is basically what WAR is in all but name. AOC had GREAT graphics, I quit after a month. It was the worst MMO I have played for a long time and most new MMO are following that mould.
As someone said, modern MMO's are theme parks. The point of Darkfall is to give real MMO fans a game they want. Not this quasi-MMO with a structured progression. In Darkfall restriction is reduced as much as possible. It will be a game of finding a clan and making friends and working together to achieve victory on the battlefield, build cities and items (those Hover ships look AWESOME!!!) and to forge alliances with neighbours while engaging in the politics of the land. The combat looks exceptionaly fun. Faced paced in some cases but those spells look great. I loved the spell that knocked the archer out of the tree!!! All of this combined is what DF fans are so happy about.
If this does not sound good to you thats fine. I truely hope you enjoy WAR and all the other generic MMOs on the horizon but don't slate a truely authentic MMO like Darkfall, just because you prefer the MMO-lite style of game.
That said i cannot wait to play this game, other than EVE I have no MMO subscriptions at the moment and this is the only one I am looking forward to playing. I think it will easly get 1m subscribers and with the reveneue they will, like EVE, be able to upgrade the graphics engine eventually.
1) Get out of the mindset that graphics = game. For most of the people looking forward to games like Darkfall, it's the gameplay that sells the game. Outdated or mediocre graphics can be overlooked.
2) Stop invoking Ultima Online. The Ultima Online that many of these fans played back in the day started dying after Renaissance and gasped it's last breath when Age of Shadows was released. These fans don't not play UO now because it has out of date graphics, but because it isn't the same game it was 8 years ago.
3) Trolling just makes you look silly, stop it...

While darkfall sounds like innovation, im not getting my hopes up until I see a release date people have tried to show others this game time and time again ive noticed it since wow first came out and its still developing nothing but promises and no facts yet.

but good way to pick out one part of one sentence out of that nicely-sized paragraph, most of which paragraph does point itself directly at darkfall (via wikipedia's definition)... this defintion doesmake everyone cat-calling "vaporware trolls" to seem, at the very least, to not have a comprehension of what vaporware actually means.
what regulare, verifiable progress is darkfall exhibiting? a one-time item is not the definition of the aformentioned.
this honestly isn't rocket science. keep it in the darkfall forums if you don't want people going "wtf" at the silliness in this thread.
Grasping at straws ?
According to the definition games that haven't provided a releasedate, isn't labeled VW.
The thing is, there is no good defintion of VW. You can sit here all day trying to design a definition that makes DF VW while not making your favorite upcoming MMO VW as well.

And when we got more women on the team, it was like No, no, no. We need puppies and horses in there.

why do people still think darkfall is vaporware, even after this video and a date.

I've uploaded the video on Vimeo, the quality is a little bit better then youtube and you can download the .avi
