If you are like me in respect of mmorpg burnout I recommend you try Warhammer. I've been loving it and it's the first time in ages I've stayed logged into a game for 2-3 hours at a time and returning for more after breaks.
2 things, the "normal" PvE/questing content is as good as any game, in fact better in some respects with the invention of public quests. The other is the open world RvR which is just so much fun. These 2 main elements are almost like 2 seperate, equally important concurrently running games seamlessly interlinked which you can choose to take part in whenever you feel like it, or not, reducing the feeling of being forced to do anything or any need to "grind" to progress, which for me is an instant game killer.
I played during closed/open beta/head start but haven't yet taken any single character to a high level so my opinion could change as time goes on but for now I'm loving it.

I would say give it a try as well. Ive been jumping from game to game since I quit playing FFXI years ago. Played WoW of and on for 2 years and just never really fell in love with that game. It was just a temporary fix for my MMO habit. WAR is the most fun Ive had playing MMO's in a while...
But this game seems to be a Hit or Miss for people, you'll either totally love this game or loath it with a passion. So if your worried you might hate it try and get a buddy key or wait for a trial. Ive been burned by pre ordering and even just buying a game, but im glad with this purchase.
RvR can be incredibly frustrating if you don't join up with a half decent group because dying repeatedly is just not fun. Maybe that's been the experience for people that haven't enjoyed it. Get into a group that's communicating and working together and it's a whole different story.
MMORPG
Does the game provide any mechanics that help assist with this process? Or does it really rely (like most games) on the players ability to locate a good guild (or fight group) on their own accord.

Anyone can create an "open" group and all open groups in your area are accessable from a panel showing location, members, classes and you can just click Join which smooths the process. It can be hit and miss as to who you end up but it can only get better as time goes on as you get to know people.
Last night I was with a large group for a couple of hours, logged of for a while and came back later and the same group was still in the area with most of the same people so I just joined back up again.
MMORPG
That's not been my experience. It's not wow, it doesn't try to be wow and personally I'm glad of that fact.
Your previous topics all slate Mythic even back before the game was released so I'm going to take your opinion with a pinch of salt.
MMORPG
I agree with the OP. WAR is fun.
NOt only that, it's quite casual. You don't have to reach max level to play the "end game".
You can simply join a scenario the very first time you play, and PvP. I played a scenario three times in a row, and my side, order, got our butts kicked every time. Evil half naked dark elf women kept stabbing me in the back. But there's always next time.
Good show Fion, it is not a groundbreaking game but more same same.
That's not a problem, since most players are looking for more of the same, and not something ground breaking.
When I play an FPS, I want to shoot other players, and watch them fall dead, adn get shot and fall dead.
When I play a RTS, I want to collect resources, and build units and attack the other side, while they are building units, and attacking me.
When I play an MMORPG, I want to level up while doiing quests and killing mobs PVE, and also kill other players in PvP.
None of that really requires antyhing ground breaking to make a good game.
If you are burned out on MMOs. Don't play this game. Plain and simple. There is nothing truly new about Warhammer so if you are already tired of whats out there Warhammer isn't going to change anything. If you are looking for something "new" I'd suggest trying Eve (you'll probably end up hating it just like the other 80% who try), Saga of Ryzom or something of that nature.

What do you think? A pug vs a well run guild with tools like vent/TS?
My brother is playing WAR right now. I am going to give a few days before I get a copy, actually.
Some awesome features:
Cons:
My point and a some others is that if you burnout why same same? There needs to be something different to get you to play again. Yes I like convience of the wasd movement and push F1 to X special move. They are licking the boot heals of Blizzard to make a buck/euro and it is discusting. For most game companies is how do we make our game as good or great as WOW. Well I have been all over mmo's looking for the great one again like years of play time and when you done with WAR 6 months from now saying it was the greatest and; but I am not currenty playing, you already answred my question. Boredome it's a bitch.
I agree with the OP here also. Maybe it isn't completely groundbreaking, but there are enough new things there to play with anyway. Leveling is easy, you have a number of different ways to do it. If you start getting bored with quests, play a scenario. Come back and jump into a public quest.
The learning curve is pretty easy, and the RvR is accesible. I've taken some bad beatings in scenarios so far, but I've one some also. You can win if you go in solo, but it requires a lot of communication. Without some communication and organization, its almost a guaranteed loss.

/signed. Burned out as well, and Warhammer isn't making a speck of difference.

Playing: Final Fantasy Online: ARR, Destiny
Most memorable games for me: UO, GW1, LoTRO
I havent played War so I cant comment on the gameplay but in developer interviews they specifically say it was modelled after wow and uses many of the same systems because wow was so effective in bringing in all types of gamers.
This game wasen't ment to be groundbreaking, It was ment to take some of the fun things in mmo's that the some people like and put them all together. In that aspect they hit a bullseye for me atleast.

Exactly. OP, why in the world would you recommend WAR for people burnt out on MMOs? Offer something unique and different to these people, not more of the exact same thing they are burnt out on.

Pardon mate? Sorry, i already played WAR and if you would call it an mmorpg, it would be an insult to the RPG genre overall.
Warhammer online is not a bad game , however , it is a themepark game with allot of action and zero role playing elements.
Big examples why WAR doesn't fit the mmorpg:
-no community atm. There is no chat.
-Crafting, economy, role playing elements like professions and non-combat content , events do not excist in WAR. I would be better off by playing a single player game, here is why:
- The rvr doesn't have a risk vs reward system. Full loot= suicide and actually it doesn't need full loot or any looting system. It does need a DP system . A example of a DP system would be something like guild wars etc.
-The AI mobs are stupid. the chronicles of spellborn ( from the new videos i have seen) have better AI , just like GW did the AI pretty right, especially if you play Hard mode .
- I always liked sandbox games and that' why i am waiting for Earthrise , fallen earth, mortal online and darkfall online but i am also waiting for GW2 because i hope that it brings both sides on the table ( open ended game play and linear game play) I will ancipitate these games also since they have the best of both!
-WAR is very easy and i want a challenge. I do not mean hardcore but i want a challenge and atleast need a brain to think.
The only linaer mmo's from 1 to 3 where:
1. guildwars
2. world of warcraft
3. everquest
Something less linear i have enjoyed are FFX and DAOC.
While i love ultima online, SWG and especially EVE online.
What i do hate is that this genre is going backwards and more and more crappy games are coming out! I hope a mmorpg who has both the hardcore and casual aspects and finds a balance between sandbox game play and linear game play and finds a balance between hard and easy.
That people, is what i think the majority of the mmo genre WANTS.

I'm going to quote a comment from another forum because I think it applies to a lot of people. Don't try to play wow through the Warhammer client, learn to play Warhammer. Otherwise it will feel like you are playing the same game because everything wow has War has.
Of course, MMORPGs have many of the same features that pass from one to the other from everquest through swq and wow inlcuding levels, classes, combat mechanics, quests etc etc. That's a MMORPG for you.
What's different? First and foremost open world RvR. It's amazing fun. After a while of playing it dawned on me that no other game really does what War is doing besides maybe DAOC which I only ever played for an hour during beta.
While PQs might not sound revolutionary they do take the PvE experience to another level and remove a lot of the annoyances that single player questing brings.
The game has enough differences to be a refreshing change.
It's been quite a while since I had the double edged situation of having a game good enough to make me want to skip the work I'm supposed to be doing

Not everyone likes the same soup and not everyone likes the same thing every day.
Put your facts up better mate. When i play an FPS, i can see 2 types. Half life shooters and open ended shooters and i also want shooters to have better AI by example or having great weapon sounds , great areas and a great setting.
RTS is the same and in the RPG genre you need even more innovating because RPG is such a huge genre. The RPG genre you have store telling rpg's, japanese rpg's , sandbox rpg's , linear rpg's etc. etc. etc.
And here is the question. Why play the same if you already have played it so much ? Isn't it if you are burnt out that you don't like THAT style anymore and want something NEW?
Right... Like i said , use better arguments next time.

No, those are crappy MMORPGs for us. SWG DIDN'T have levels, or classes, or for the most part quests when it originally came out. All of those things were added later when SWG was mutilated by SOE.
I think this is a problem with the "WoW generation" of MMOers is that they think all MMORPGs need to have classes/levels/quests, and don't look at new games coming out by those standards, but by what the game has besides classes/levels/quests. While I (and I'm sure many other people) look at the games mechanics and see classes/levels/quests and think "Oh joy, more of the same coming our way". That is how some people see WAR as new and exciting and others see it as the same old crap.
I'll just inform you right now, an MMORPG doesn't need classes or levels, and quests should be optional. BUT there is so much more that these new MMOs are missing such as player housing, social interaction, ect. It's just sad to watch the genre devolve like this.

Open world RVR has been done in DAOC and open world pvp has been done way back in UO .
I do not find PQ enjoying because the AI is so dull and that's a fact. Developers are at the time that they can create far better AI. Upcoming TCOS proves this and even guild wars proves this! It is possible and developers should create a better AI . Pve get's enjoyable when the mobs aren't just standing to be killed.
Mmorpg's have so much things what has not been touched yet and in other genre sthese elements have been successfull widely ( customization by example) and mmorpg's need to be mmorpg's and not mmo action games or games where there is no community.
Mmo's need to advance. UO in it times was 10 years ahead. We got less so people accepted it and it get's lesser and lesser. The worst thing in this part is that people are accepting this. They accept dull quests like kill 10 monsters. These quests are big jokes, lazy and uncreative .
Quests are quests, not stupid kill x thing because i said it or a bear drops a sword and AI standing in a ride waiting for to be killed.
The list goes on. This generation accepts crappy simple game play and pays monthlee for that and when content comes. The developers just use rehashed textures of old monsters and content so it costs less money.
ps: Sorry for my bad english.
