Is this mainly a PvE or PvP game?

zethcarnzethcarn Member UncommonPosts: 1,558

After watching youtube gameplay videos I was pleased to see the combat looks very fluid and natural.  I haven't seen combat this fluid since playing WoW (which I no longer play).

So is this game mainly PvE?  And is it being released in the U.S.?  Cause I heard a rumor it wasn't (several months ago).

edit: Please exuse my ignorance.  I changed the topic title.

TCoS was originally planned as a PvE game (except for Shard conquest and battlegrounds type scenarios) but at the game convention a month or two ago, they announced that they will also make PvP servers for the game (ffa I believe). Other than that, I can't say much more about it (See signature as to why).

Not according to the developers. The game was developed with PvP in mind from the start. However, it is true that most effort was invested in elements of the game that are PvE related, like lore and quests. Well, if we ignore the work that went into to combat system, that is.

The question whether this will be a PvE or a PvP game, can only be answered by: both.

It 'was' a PVP game first.

They wanted all servers to have some sort of PVP zones while out in the world , there was no way around them ,but then changed it  to have PVE servers as a choice.

so now it would be as said Both  PVP/PVE

The concept for the original servers has not changed. As far as we know they are still the same PvE/PvP mix that was originally planned. What they added is PvP servers with a ffa PvP ruleset, but they did not change the concept for the original servers. I haven't even seen them call the old ruleset servers PvE servers (yet, though a label does not cause a change, but maybe they are being cautious putting a label on it).

What is this game doing different then other MMO's besides the user interface?  And what could you compare this games gameplay to?

As part of the community over there in the www.tcos.com forums, here is what I came up with. Their original design was to have a general PvE game with some PvP encounters (shard conquest, which was pushed to post-launch, arena matches, and a underground mine for harvesting with PvP enabled). Lately, they found that adding a PvP server along side a PvE server seemed to draw more people into the game and gave some of the community what they were asking for so they announced an FFA PvP ruleset server for launch.

All in all, I think of the old school EQ when they first started to add PvP servers to the game. There was PvP in the PvE servers, but it was consensual, where the PvP servers had a special ruleset.

    Hope this helps.

Edit: Did not notice your above question. They are taking the AoC idea (really both games were in development around the same time, so really both can take credit on having an aiming system for players when swinging their weapons instead of the traditional point-click-autoattack) but TCoS takes it further and removes ALL hidden dice roles for landing hits (cant remember if AoC did the same). Also, even though this really is not a "innovation" but the company is taking a longer development cycle to make sure the game is polished before releasing the game.

    Again, hope this helps.

MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.

That is a very wide question. I am afraid it would too much of my time to answer that, so why do you not read the sticky thread on this forum? http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/207/view/forums/thread/192358

I didnt know they annoced an FFA server. sounds interesting.

The combat system in Spellborn is what got my attention. No dice rolls and player skill emphasis. Will be worth a look for me

Hmm I hope this isnt a game that tries to make the PvE crowd happy AND the PvP crowd happy, as this always leads to disaster because in the end they make no one happy.

Agreed.  I'm hoping it turns out to be a good PvE game.

I am pretty sure that they have tried to develop the game to appeal to both sets of gamers, more the casual PvErs, and the casual PvPers. People who do a bit of both, and have no real preference on which one they enjoy the most.

It is one of the things that is a concern of mine for the game, the recent annoucement of a FFA PvP server, while cool, feels like they are still trying to appeal to both sets of gamers which always ends up with one or the other being pissed off about something.

actually creating a world that has both pvp and pve isn't that difficult and i've seen it almost done. What you need to do is design the mobs to be built the same way as players. Boss encounters would be a group of mobs. If you build mobs that are built the same way as players then people of equal level would be like fighting an intellegent mob. The problem is just that some reason people like the idea of 10 people killing one big guy, so they have to skew it to make the mobs buffer than players and thus we develope the inbalance.
