there's no reason... with a MMO it required logged in authentication.
SecuROM wouldn't be worth it, wouldn't help, and you don't need the CD/DVD to play a MMO to begin with.
Course, the WAR install Discs made me install EA Downloader which doesn't list WAR or use the Downloader to update... so it's entirely possible they'll just start shoving it on all their products.

yer...so google secureROM and what its for perhaps?
and no, i wouldnt play a game that required not only a monthly sub, uniquely tied to a product license key, and then in addition insisted i whore my optical drives with a coaster.
Originally posted by TenSpotting I don't know of any MMORPG that uses secuROM in it.... would you play one that uses it?
Pointless question. MMORPGs will never use copy protection because they don't need it--you have to have a currently paid-up account on the host's servers to play.
you know what's funny? People who are flipping out about SecuROM have no idea what StarForce is...
I mean you want to talk about bad copy-protection software? StarForce wrote the BOOK on it...
When StarDock released Galactic Civilizations 2, and refused to use StarForce protection... StarForce hosted the torrent and linked to it in the official Forums.

Actually though, Stardock uses a far worse sort of copy protection, from the consumers point of view - product activation for patches. Every time you patch the game (and their initial releases are always incomplete and buggy), you have to re-activate the game over the internet.
And you're not allowed to sell the game or give it to anyone once you are done with it. (Obviously, you can, but they have to buy a new license). That's what copy protection has evolved to - not fighting against piracy, but against sales of used games.
Still, at least it doesn't foul up your dvd-r drive. After installing Apartment Life for the Sims 2 (which uses securerom), I can no longer burn dvds. I get some sort of APSI driver error.

maybe it is because I buy all my stardock games trough their online interface, but I never had such a problem. I guess it is limited to the boxes you buy in stores.
And yes, you pay the commodity of playing without DVD and downloading the game to any pc you own by not being able to sell the used copy away. Considering most of the second hand market is dominated by consoles games anyway (for example most gameStop won't buy your pc games), that is a small price to pay, in my opinion.
About the OP, as many have said, there is no need to copy protect MMorpg dvds as you have to possess an account to play and the only way to obtain an account illegally is by hacking their servers and while I am sure that is possible, it is not something left to the general pirate population to do.

StarForce is why I didn't get that one game I really wanted. Indiego Prophecy. I refuse to play anything with that POS StarForce hidden in it.

There's no reason to have an MMO that has secuROM. One CD can only be online at a time and that same key generates cash each month from subs.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

No I wouldn't play it.
Why would a subscription game need secuROM??

Symantec AV doesn't consider SecuROM to be malicous!
Neither does EA

Ditto, mute point, most MMO's I play don't even have CD's, but I would NOT play such a game, should one appear.
SecuROM has caused thousands upon thousands of system failures and software problems.

R.I.P. City of Heroes and my 17 characters there
Thats because symantec AV is malicious.. seriously...
I wouldnt run either one of those on any machine I own.
Warp
Well Macaffee does. As do several other anti virus programs. It does meet the definition of a virus and acts like one.
But for a game that you only play on line it would be useless to use it. You authenticate when you log in.
Personally, you are a fool if you install a game that uses it on your computer.
I don't steal software. So I don't appreciate being treated as a criminal when I put a disk in my DVD drive.
No, I wouldn't play any game that uses secuROM, any game at all.

SecuROM + mmorpg = quickest failure of a mmorpg this side of AoC.
