I don't understand this one. Why take away an ability that helps solo PvE so critically? Can someone explain why priests were so scary powerful that we had to lose the ability to do some decent mana-less damage in a pinch?

...but you get "Twin Disciplines" as a tier one talent in the 'discipline' tree as a replacement which gives up to 5% extra healing/damage done by your instant spells, which is maybe a little more useful across the board i'm guessing?
It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.
I see your point, I guess I wasn't reading carefully enough to make that connection.
I guess that the increase in damage from instant spells should obviate the need to do as much finishing with wands against mobs that require a lot of mana to defeat. Only way to know for sure is to try it out. The wand thing jumped out at me because I have tried to match my gear and wands, switching things out to cope with different situations. Thanks for pointing out a compensating factor.
I like when people cry about there too easy game not being so easy anymore.
So someone asking a straightfoward question is 'crying' now?
I can't keep up with the constantly evolving Troll vernacular...
I like it when people post things that aren't constructive or even related to the topic.
crying to me = what i just explained was happening. My buddy played preist to 70, and it was cake. unhappy about that being made a bit harder? makes you a crybaby.
Can I ask you what level you are, what spec you have and what your attack sequence is? I'm not trying to be snotty, but there really isn't any reason to be wanding while you are solo pveing as a priest. Priests wand in instances while healing, and affliction warlocks sometimes wand at the end of a fight as their 5 million dots are ticking.
I think maybe we just have a different definition of the terms ' criticially' and 'decent'. Wanding dps (even when specced for it) is drastically less than a SW:D or even a pushed-back smite.
I do agree though. they really could have just left Wand spec there. The same is kinda true with shield spec for enhancement shammies. There were probably some players who liked using a shield for the first 40 levels.
Wow, mmorpg.com can always be counted on for adolescent nastiness. ) Someone sure went to a lot of trouble to track down my silly little post on the Wow forum in order to insult players of a game he doesn't like.
The poster who said there's no reason to wand as solo priest may be right for his style of play, but of course there is really no right way to play wow, which is part of why so many people like it ). I find the wand helpful because I like to play up to the toughest things I can take on at a given level, so I tend to run low on mana when doing that. I have a number of characters, my highest priest is 70 shadow spec. And yes, in instances it's pretty huge to be able to do steady damage while watching for heals, without drawing aggro, so in that case (which I wasn't even really considering in my original post) a 5% boost to instant spells is not really an adequate substitute.
As far as crying goes, I save that for real life, like if someone I care about dies.
And as for hurling random insults at people I don't know... I try to avoid that entirely ).
Wow is more than complicated enough thank you.
Again have to restudy all those talent tree settings for my 3 mains will take ages.
It takes at least 3 to 5 months for me to play my classes well. So I am not embarassed to say it.
Better that than that guildie who didn't know she had a bubble on her paladin class (really happened one day), just before she wanted to do the Kara attunement. Incredible isn't it.
Wanding is a very valid tactics to use, it doesnt have anything to do with adjusting the difficulty level:
01. when soloing: wanding maximises the time you have within Spirit Tap by killing the mob without spending any mana.
02. in pve/raid: what other options does a Priest-player have when he can't cast a spell except for wanding on a Wisdom-Judged mob/boss ? This situations include (but not limited to):
* When a Priest is oom / silenced
* Nefarian Priest call
I didn't mean to sound so harsh. I guess I just think the OP was being a bit liberal with the use of the word 'critical' in his post. Yes, when soloing, using the wand for the last 2-3 seconds of a fight will get you an extra tick of full spirit tap MP5.... but you are mostly killing the mob with dots(SW:P and VT) and losing a percentage of your wand damage for one or two swings isn't going to even be noticable, let alone critical.
I've lvled up a priest twice and never used wand spec...

I wanded a lot with my Shadow Priest as well since I used a lot of dots. Dot them up, use a mind flay and mind blast and then wand them till they die. I could save on a lot of mana that way. Granted the damage you're doing with wands is not really all that high and it's not boosted that much with the skill anyway, so although it's useful, I wouldn't exactly call it critical either.
With the new mana regen mechanic, it doesn't seem mana would be an issue at all unless you are AoE grinding to hell. I think wanding would make it so OP with the new mana regen mechanic that you might probably get all your mana back in secs so it could be why it was removed. (I am no priest so correct me wrong). Secondly, you might wanna try out Shadow priest spec because they really rock for dps as of late if you enjoy dpsing. Not sure about smiting though. :P

Kinda almost wish I hadn't opened my big qwertyuiop.
Anyway, the mana regen comment is right on topic, and makes a lot of sense, now that I've had a chance to look things over in game a bit more.
I am shadow specc'd on my main. As I tried to make clear in my third post on this thread, it's a playstyle thing, where when I'm soloing (especially now as 70), I'm going for the highest level of difficulty I can get without pointlessly dying, whether that's taking on elites, or groups of mobs. So every scrap of mana matters. Clearly there's no NEED to be wanding in order to level, that was never my point. )
Thanks to all for the comments and suggestions, you helped me take a closer look at the mititgating effects in the new talent tree.
The game is one if not the easiest MMO's to date. And with the "Grrrrrr" is no different than crying, whinning.
And then it gets better. To defend this lol and call others trolls. Classic. Might as well be saying "its ok it is a big deal, go ahead and let it out, cry all you want"
I don't see how it's the easiest MMO out there. I find myself more challenged by WoW then I ever was in EQ / Vanguard, even Planetside or EVE.
Time != challenge btw, if you were just being thick.
Try 'WoW is one of the easiest MMOs because....' next time, will be interesting to shoot all of your arguments down
Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...
For once I am glad I dont have to spam shadowbolts anymore and have a rotation playing Affliction now and destro if you like the big crunch numbers. Separates the good locks from the bad.

Zeblade: you have real emotional problems, get help. How old are you? It's not too late.
P.S. people MIGHT pay the slightest attention to what you say if you learned to write and spell.
