MMO for a Peaceful Builder?

XmudderXmudder Member UncommonPosts: 14

This is a strange request, but I am looking for a game, whether pay, free, or PBBG, or even single player, that appeals to peaceful builders.  When I play most strategy games like Civ or GalCiv I prefer building up my empire to conquering others.  This doesn't mean I want a PvP free game, it just means I'd like a game where I can focus on construction / production and let the more agressive people in my allaince / guild handle the recreational violence, but where my non combat contributions are actually useful / valued and not derided.

The closest I've found so far is actually EVE online, where it is easy to find a fight if I am looking for one but I can also spend the bulk of my time building.  Ryzom is also good, but I'm beginning to feel like I harvest / craft all the time and combat is repetitive.  Had a similar experience with EQ 2.  Ishtaria was nice, but I had trouble finding meaningful combat / questing.  DAoC, WAR, Entropia, DDO, and Anarchy Online didn't offer me much in this area.  I liked the city buidling elements of AoC, but couldn't be arsed to play the game long enough to get to there myself.

I'd also like decent graphics so I can see what I build.  Too many PBBGs I've tried were either text based or had weak / cartoony graphics, too much like a spread sheet and not a game.

I have a suspicion I would have liked the original SWG.  Don't like the current incarnation.

  Any ideas?

Well, you did mention single player.

What about one of the Sim City or Sim Civilization games?

Wurm online seems like what your looking for

Wurm online is a good choice. However I'm not sure how much if you're efforts will be appreciated or if there is any communal purpose. Last I heard people were fencing around NPC merchants so only they could access it. Apparently its condoned. So it seems more of a single player game, inhabited by other humans. I could be entirely wrong, check it out yourself It's not such a big download.

    Here is the website

Sounds like you are decribing A Tale in the Desert, it was an MMO that consisted entirely of cooperative building.  The developers described it as a haven for artists and free thinkers, not sure if it is still around or not, but you can try googling it.

I was looking into a tale in the desert a while back, apparently the guy who developed it is gone or has no time for updates. As a result the game has been in stasis for over a year. I believe and there are concerns of the plug being pulled, if it hasn't already.

This is a false statment, the development team is not and was not gone. A tale 4 is set for release in a matter of weeks. Also I am asuming this statment comes from the fact that tale 3 was the longest tale yet to date. But, had this been accuratly researched, you would find that the game is updated, and the creator is often seen in game!

And also I do think that this is a great game for you.

A tale in the desert is what your looking for, as stated tale 4 is out in a few weeks. Give it a shot, i think you'll love it.

And Teppy (creator) is very much around and active.

      Thanks for the replies.

Sim games:  Too pacifistic, too constrained.  Put this here or your citizens will complain.  I don't care about my citizens, I want to build things.  I also dislike how slow develpment is, you have to wait for everything to have an effect.

Wurm online:  I cook food in real life, I'm not that interested in having to cook food virtually.  A little too low level for me.

ATitD looks interesting, if pacifistic.  Will give it a try.

I'm not looking for a game without conflict, I'm looking for a game with conflict for which playing a support role won't get me derided for being a carebear.   Kinda like the option to share a country in HOI 2.  I'll handle production and research, let some else handle combat in the European (or Asian) theater.  Supreme Ruler 2020 is also nice, except the campaigns seem to have either too much warfare or too little.

Runes of Magic looks interesting, still waiting on the Beta though.  I think we can build keeps for GvG combat.  Hinterland had a good idea, if poorly implemented, mixing city building and raiding.  I liked being able to build a castle in NVN 2, even it it was somewhat limited in what you could do with it.  And like I said, I liked what I saw about AoC's guild village system.

Many browser MMOs have kinda what I want, if in a primitive form.  I'd like to be able to manage a planet / keep / city / country, but let others handle the bulk of the fighting.  I'll fight, but I prefer to do so with people who are good at it.

tale in the desert is very awesome.

Decent graphics, way in depth gameplay.

You get a true sense of accomplishment when you start from nothing, then have a lot of stuff going for you.

There is some kind of pvp, but not what you think.  You pretty much build.  And it's online.

In dreamlords you are put in a guild or something, dunno if its exacly what you are looking for but i think its close. I think you should be able to bend the game to your will at least. Should check it out.

Beyond Protocol is a sci-fi empire building rts MMO (i think, dont quote me on that...all i know is you build lots of ships and take care of planets and its online).  Its been featured in my MMO mag for a few issues now and i think its nearing open beta (or is in open beta).

anyway it sounds like your kind of game as (i dont see why you could not) build up some economic strongholds on your planet and help churn out new tech or military units (i think you can actually design units, not sure) and either donate it to a fellow player or use it yourself.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
