Is the general mood and atmosphere the same as it was for DnL before release? The huge amount of hype, the rabid defensiveness of any questioning of the game, the assertion that it will be the second coming of Christ?
I wasn't around then (though I heard plenty later...) so I don't know anything about it. I do know that DnL was WAY overhyped, and that the folks (a small company) couldn't deliver. Did the DnL designers purposefully overhype it and everything? Was the situation similar in any way?
I mean, they've caught my interest, but I'm not all that sure I want to play with some of the folks on this forum. Absolute madmen.
And please, only answer if you are posting a serious reply and not some defensive fanboy post. Like I said, I am interested, but I'm worried that I'm just getting caught up in the hype and am setting myself up for disappointment...I don't wanna bother with this if it's gonna suck.
And on a side note...December is going to be an expensive month

I disagree with the parallels. Aventurine can hardly be accused of hyping their game, quite the opposite. Never was there a more closed mouth development house, that releases info in very controlled doses.
Which strangely enough, has contributed to the game remaining one of the most discussed on these forums, with far more attention that it deserves.
One good parallel, Aventurine has promised an amazing amount of content, far beyond what most people feel is their ability (or anyone elses for that matter) to deliver.
Will they pull it off? Until they release it, we'll never know/.

You misunderstood me. Hype from players is still hype. I can take a phrase like "Dynamic mobs," and translate that to mean that they'll take over cities, go on prowls for easy prey, run when outnumbered, lay ambushes, etc. All it really could mean is that they have a simple code that makes their camp move every now and then.
What I really wanted to know is, what similarities were there between the two pre-launch. Like I said, December is going to be expensive, and the more I can save the better (Since I plan on picking up TCoS too...)
This is, as far as I can tell, the ONLY parallel.
Dark and Light devs were more than happy to ask players for money long before the game came out. Not only has Darkfall not done this, but they have flat out told us that there will be a totally open and endless free trial (Ryzom style, from what I can tell). If this game were going to be a scam, what incentive would they have to give it away for free?

They have not said that there will definately be a free trial.
They said that they would like there to be.

It is possible that I misunderstood his intentions, or that there was some confusion about the nature of the "try before you buy" mentality the devs are using, but there is no doubt that we will be able to play the game before we make any kind of purchase.
A direct quote from Tasos himself:
"Our hope for Darkfall is that you won't spend a cent on the game until you've tried it and decided you want to play it."
Good lord man, read the quote again. Take special note of these words - "our hope". Apply those words to the rest of statement. There is absolutely no guarantee of play before pay.
To the OP - I was around for DnL, and there is a sense of deja-vu. At least I was quick enough on the draw to get one of the free SOG accounts, so I did spend any money on that turd. Yes they overhyped, both devs and fanboys. And I dont think any game could live up to the expectations for Darkfall either, but we will find out eventually. Hopefully sooner rather than later, and hopefully free...

devs havent hyped anything
I was on the DNL train and I have to admit this feels so much like the events before DNL failed it's like deja-vu. DNL didnt hype the game all that much either btw
It scares me because I truly was a DNL fanboy, but I think that was needed to make me wiser because now I know the truth.... the chances of DF being complete and utter garbage at this poitn is much higher then we'd like to admit

well i guess they did at adw but not before that
Don't listen to the fanboys of this game. They live in a fucking fairy world with Tasos and the rest of the devs where no wrong can be done and every promise is "GURANTEED".
The game STINKS of a Dark and Light repeat in tems of quality. I don't think they will rip anybody off but the quality and promises won't be there.
I was around for DnL and I said that game was a piece of shit a full year or more before it did the SoG thing and just bombed.
It was so obvious but all the fanatics that followed it woulfd not listen to ANYONE. They would not even listen to Beta testers who were saying it was crap.
It's the exact same thing here. Tons of promises.. but pretty much shit to show for it all and tons of overhyped zealots running around the internet proclaiming the next coming of Christ on nothing but blind faith, a few generic videos and words.
The funny thing is most of the people who left DnL are now seeking more abuse and let down over at the Darkfall forums.
I was around for DnL. That was a trainwreck waiting to happen. What was the other disaster called? Mourning, wasn't it?
From my years of watching mmo development I can say a few things that are my opinion, and by no means fact...but my opinion none the less.
1. The DF devs aren't straight criminals like the DnL guys.
2. There might actually be a game released at some point for DF...
3. The game won't live up to the fans expectations, but may still be playable.
4. Within 6 months of release...many people will realize they no longer want the free for all sandbox pvp they thought they wanted, but some new gamers will find this and enjoy it until they burn out on it.
If you dont want to be dissapointed like with DnL wait 2 months after release and see if it is what you want, simple

That's funny because I distinctly remember one of the devs literally telling the followers of Darkfall to go out and I quote "Spread the word".
Why advertise through the proper channels and pay for it when you can have your lackies just run around spamming and doing it for you for free?
Seems to have worked out pretty well for them.
Funny they haven't purchased even one banner spot anywhere weeks before a launch. Now if you don't think that's strange then go get you're head checked out.

Hype does not mean "spend money".
After 8 years of articles, interviews, dev logs on several MMO sites, Aventurine racecars, hosted events - it is reasonable to say they have hyped their game. For this entire time, they have been "almost ready" for that public beta. They claim the largest and most complex world, more unique NPCs than any other game, and outstanding FPS during huge battles on moderate-low spec PCs.
Tasos said in 2005: "The additional time taken to work on the game was a decision made in an effort to make Darkfall directly competitive with the largest MMOG titles out there. Nobody is going to feel they've stepped down by switching to Darkfall, or play Darkfall as an alternative to their main game." -and- "It's getting close to the point where people will get the chance to playtest the game. If they aren't looking at Darkfall now, they'll probably wish they had been. "
They clearly expect to compete with the best AAA titles available, and if you dont think so now, you will wish you had! That was in 2005, they have had 3 more years of polish since those statements were made. And, when AV signed to distribute Darkfall in 2008, this was said in a press release:
"Compared with exisitng respectively on line games, Darkfall offers better graphics, technology that allows simultaneous connection of more users, more interactivity and increased options from the users".
This is some pretty big talk. Excessive (8 years of it) and prone to exaggeration. Hype.
The similarities are scary. The only real difference is that DnL had more solid info available about the game on their website when they were this to close open beta/release. Darkfall is a complete mystery. Sure, there are plenty of dev quotes saying what they would like to have in the game, but a lot of that has not been confirmed. We don't even know the system requirements for DF even though they're supposedly handing out beta invites as we speak. lol.
It's just comical that anyone takes this game seriously.

I guess the word hype is subject to interpretation. The way I see hype, is putting substantial resources in advertising, making CG trailers and other marketing tools to gain massive exposure for a game this isnt out yet and that no one knows how it will play. It seems to me the DF dev's are givng their opinion, ocasionally for free to small media.
Likely, there will be a free trial at launch.. and everyone will get a chance to play before they pay. If this dosent happen, I suggest that all of the skeptics dont buy the game, just wait a few weeks/months and see how the game is being received. This should solve everyones problem on this thread, except the trolls who have no interest in the game and are here because aparently they are tired of all the games being released as well... to them I suggest playing some non-mmo's... i picked up gears of war 2 and I have to say in my opinion its one of the best games ive ever played.. the multiplayer is amazing as well.. and will keep you going for a long time...
Remember Old School Ultima Online
I was lucky enough to get one of the 10,000 free beta keys for DnL and I had been following its development loosely for years, the launch was an absolute blast, it was fantastic, and they managed a very successful launch considering what they had to work with.
I have many fond memories of the community’s reaction to the truth about the game on the forums and in game, hilarious, especially from the most zealous and vocal supporters.
I expect Darkfalls launch to be at least as entertaining possibly even more so depending on the actual outcome.
I don’t see many fundamental differences between DnL and Darkfall a few weeks before launch and “open” beta is scheduled to start.
The only major differences I can remember are that
DnL was in public beta for a lot longer then Darkfall is predicted to be.
DnL was publicly demonstrated relatively a lot more then Darkfall has been.
DnL had a lot more mainstream media, marketing and public attention then Darkfall has.
DnL was using a tried and tested (but stolen) world engine, Darkfalls client and technology is so far totaly commercially untested.
DnL launch was postponed for only a few years, Darkfalls has been postponed for more then 5 years.
DnL had a lot more confirmed official information about the game and launch released then Darkfall.
DnL had a lot more of its official features and content substantiated and demonstrated.
So it would appear in my opinion based on this comparison it would appear Darkfall has even less chance of success then DnL.
I disagree about there being no hype, the Darkfall developers and their community of supporters have been hyping this game at every opportunity for the last 8 years.
8 years of talking about how fantastic and wonderful your game is to anyone that would listen and constantly saying beta and release would be coming soon is hyping, its just hyping without spending any money.
Promoting your game and company threw various activities in Greece is hyping your game, its just most people don’t know they have been for years and are still hyping Darkfall in Greece.
In my opinion this game has the highest ever ratio of unjustified hype to actual proven capabilities and substantiated features and content ever.
Zero marketing, mainstream media attention and no open beta 1 month from launch means either
They don’t have any money or time for these things and / or they don’t think they are necessary.
Or they are not going to spend money on marketing a game they know will not get a return on the extra investment, and they know allowing mainstream media access to the game and starting open beta will only be more detrimental the further from launch it happens.
Or the mainstream media attention and marketing and open beta will start soon over the next month.
Or Darkfall is not releasing in 1 months time.

DaftRaiden,
I didnt really see any of your counter points containing any relevancy, or even logical rebuttals. I dont think you have the tools to properly debate with Polarization.
That being said, there are many, and I mean many similiarities between DnL, and Darkfall, and he has listed them in quite a concise and succinct way. All his points are valid, and simply saying, "leave our boards." does not constitute a reply that in anyway discredits his arguements.
I know a lot of you guys are HUGE fans of Darkfall, however you are going to need to fight fire with fire. You will need valid counterpoints that have been given some thought, as well as being able to manipulate the language with a bit of eloquence.
This shortcoming, as well as well as the "kkthxbai" attitude Ive seen fans turning toward people inquiring about Darkfall adds up to a recipe for disaster. It wont be the "trolls" that turn people away from Darkfall, it will be the "fans".

Fanboys are the opposite side of the coin as trolls and sometimes do more harm then good. You should see the actual darkfall forums people are real shitty to each other. Just relax people
