hey since im bored with no games to play ive been thinking of trying out GW. first question is what expansions do i need , ive been to the site and saw like 3 or 4 expansions and some mods. second, in pvp if i die do i lose my gear cash or get any debuff? also i heard that you can get a pvp toon instantly at lvl 20 but a pve gear is needed for unlocks to help my pvp char which expansion or mod is this on?

any other help that will help a newbie will be greatly appreciated

There's only 1 expansion: Eye of the North. The 3 others (the original campaign, referred to as 'Prophecies', Factions and Nightfall). Those 3 are standalone games and you can either play them seperately, with no need for any of the other ones, or you can link them together (you can then travel with your char to any expansion, providing you bought it and have added the key to your account). Only Eye of the North needs one of the three base games to play.

In PvP, when you die, you don't lose gear or cash. You do get a debuff. The more you die, the bigger the debuffs get. The debuff diminshes your max health and energy, percentage wise. After the first time dieing, you get a 15% DP, meaning that you have 15% less energy and health. You can't get more than 60% btw. You can get rid of (part of) the DP (death penalty) in several ways (gaining a level for instance, or earning Morale Boosts). Playing well can also give you buffs in the same way. Maximum is 10% (10% more health and energy).

And yes, you can make a PvP toon level 20 instantly. In former days, before they introduced rewards for PvPing (so called Balthazar Faction Points), you needed to unlock weapon mods, skills and such through PvE. These days, you can go earn Balthazar Faction Points in PvP and spend those points on unlocks.

Another possibility is to just buy 'unlock packs' for PvP (which unlocks certain stuff, depending on what package you get). It's probably those PvP packs that you were looking at on the site. If you have no intrest in PvE at all, you might as well get the PvP edition of each (or all) campaigns. Saves you a lot of hassle.

To sum it up: the regular versions have both the PvE campaign and the PvP stuff, but without any unlocks. The PvP versions (PvP packs) don't include any PvE campaign, but have most/all stuff unlocked for PvP.

I think u should start with the very first game. It is very heavy on story telling and will introduce you into the game in a steady pace. Or start with the nightfall. Its RPG element is also strong, and you get to play with heroes from the start (I consider heroes to be one of the strongest point of the game). I think u can play nightfall without the original, you just cant get to the content outside the expansion.

I practicaly never PvP, but if memory serves me right, I didn't lose anything when I died. PvP has a lot of strategic meaning, and less FPS meaning.

yes, you can get  a PvP toon that is level 20 right off the bat. But you will have a set of standard skills with it. You need to PvE to unlock many elite skills that you can use. It adds a small token of advantage in your battles. You are still fairly competetive since most of the time its your personal skills and those of your temmates that turn the tide of the battle. I like to watch PvP battles and  often I see an even sided battle turn into a victory by a single clever maneuver of one of the sides.

I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

Depends on whether he wants to PvE at all, really.

if you are smarter than the others, it does not matter if you played 1 hour or 1 year.

you just have to know what skills do what and when is the proper time to use it.

note: that if you have a PVP character, your armour and weapons will be equally powerfull as theirs, (they might have different mods to it such as ebon(earth dmg) or sundering(penetrating), but the to hit is the same.

The skills you can access by clicking on your skillbar, or pressing 'K', but I guess you already figured that out. To use items you have unlocked: press 'I' (inventory) and then click the button 'PvP Equipment'. That brings you to a screen where you can put runes and weapon mods on your gear. There, you also get to choose different armour looks. Some people have unlocked new looks however, or have decked out their PvE character with a different look for PvP. Some looks you simply won't have (yet). Your armour LOOKS whimpy maybe, but all the armours have the same base stats.

So if you want any armour that is different than the ones you can choose from, you need to either take a char through PvE and buy it there and deck it out with runes and inscriptions, or you need to play Automated Tournaments in GvG, gain tournament reward points and hand them in at Tolkano (NPC) for rewards. These rewards include new armour skins. For detailed info: guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/PvP_reward

Less easy to answer...It depends heavily on which mode you are playing. I think I can assume that you're definitely not playing GvG since you just started, and probably not HA either. My guess is: you are playing random arenas (RA)?

If so, then my general advice would be: make sure you have a res signet on your bar (the signet, not a res spell), that you have 1 form of self heal, and that you either take a speed boost or a skill that slows the enemy down. The other 5 slots you can use for damage. Make sure you don't spread out your attribute points too much over too many attributes.

Random Arenas also gets used a lot to test out or practice builds for HA or GvG. Another thing you can do is to watch some HA or GvG matches (enter Observer Mode by pressing 'O'), select a player there, and write down the build that you see there and try it out in RA. These builds are not always great for RA, but it gives you some practice, some idea on how certain builds work, and it gives you some practice in recognizing builds (and start figuring out how to counter them).

You really should play some PvE at some point. If you don't, you're really missing out IMO. A lot of fun.
