This is just a bullshit cop out. If they really have the ability to produce what they have been touting all these years then they surely would also have the ability to put in place a proper pre launch marketing campaign. Dont' you get it? These things go hand in hand. It's the most rudimentary common practice that there is when placing a new product on the market.
Heh, like Half Life??
OpiumKing, take a look at how many betaregistrations DF already had 2 weeks into the phase.. Tasos KNOWS that there is no product on the market with the features DF is gonna have.. He KNOWS that the old-school gamers from pre-trammel are hungrier than ever after excactly those features! The only thing he needs to do is to make the product and then let you trolls do the viral marketing...
And the most hilarious part of it all is that you don't even get it
They don't want to "sell the game" as you put it, since it will most likely be a digital download with a two week trial. They aren't going to start advertising untill after release, because like Tasos says: for an MMO market word of mouth is the best form of advertising.
I mean, just look at what word of mouth has done for Darkfall. It's the #1 In Development (and #3 overall) game on the most popular Western MMO website. That's huge advertising in its self, and much better advertising than any kind of banner or something.
They aren't making an effort to hype the game up like crazy before release to sell more boxes, because boxes isn't what they want to sell. They want to get longterm players paying them a monthly fee, and hyping it like hell isn't the way to go about that.
I mean, isn't the community doing all the hyping for them anyway? lol

Of why Tasos and crew have absolutely no clue as to what the hell they are doing. Good marketing IS KEY to the success of any product. This is one of the most basic things that you are tought in any kind of business class or course. The fact that Mr Tasos shoves it aside like it's nothing and simply states the game will "sell itself" should be one of the biggest warning signs out there that this person is as clueless as clueless can get and that they peobably do not even have the proper resources to do a sustained marketing campaign such as what Warhammer did with $600,000... But yet DO have the resources to build one of the (on paper) most feature rich MMORPG's ever?? When you develop something you automatically include a marketing budget for it. This is how good and proper projects are planned out.
No Marketing is not the key to success for any Product. The Products quality is the key to success, marketing is to aid that success. If you hope that marketing will hide the fact that your product sucks good luck it may for a short time if your marketing is good, but after awhile people catch on and they won't buy a product from you again because they fill lied to, or at the very least they make them hesitant to try another product from the same company.
People seem to forget it's the product were buying, not the commercials, not the celebs, not the Cinematic trailers. Were buying the actual product, all a company should do is inform you what the product is and then let it speak for itself.
The saying is "There is no truth in advertising" and this is a very good saying because it is very very true. Marketing and Advertising are about how far you can stretch the truth within a respectable limit so that you can grab as much money as you can.
Sorry you put so much stock in marketing and advertising, I put my stock in the product. I am pretty sure I will lose far less money and be far happier in the long run that way.

Can I ask a simple question? If you hate the game why are you here? Why post? Why read Darkfall forums at all? Why do market research? Why not simply do what most people do when they don't like something, and simply avoid it? I cannot understand why a person would spend time surrounded by something they hate.
If you think the devs are dishonest and the game is going to suck, then just don't play it. Why on earth would you care if other people play it? Why on your opinion the animatons are so bad then? I mean, buying a good running animation in Second Life is 30 cents of a dollar. Guess buying it for a whole game would be much more expensive but, maybe what... 100 dollars? One thousand for a whole pack? 10.000 dollars? Why didn't they buy it knowing it has such a big impact on lower intellect individuals like myself that enjoy a good animation going along with a good gameplay?
Where are all those millions? In programming the netcode and AI and combat? Ok... lets imagine it is because of that.. but I really doubt it.
I suppose that we will see some marketing around January, perhaps a week before launch? Conventional ways of doing business may work or not, perhaps doing business in a non conventional way may bring success or not. Business is all about taking risks.
How many times does it have to be explained to you? Marketing campaign pre-launch has NOTHING to do with the game on release and its ability to retain subs.
How many times does it have to be explained to you that YES IT DOES.
Marketing is the catalyst to GETTING SUBS in the first place.
Unless of course they have no problems with retaining the few thousand subs that they'll get from their ZERO marketing campaign.
If marketing doesn't matter pre launch than why the hell has every game in existence made damn sure that they had a proper marketing system in place befiore it launch?
If you think Darkfall hasnt had a marketing campaign, you are more lost than we all thought. They do it differently, but they are marketing. And the numbers are there as proof. Highly talked about here. 200k and rising on official...even more on other boards.
Getting subs is not as important as maintaining subs. Yes you need to get them to maintain them....but AoC got them and failed cause they sucked.
A quality product on release is the best marketing tool cause word travels through reviews and they will get more subs and maintain them.

Are you seriously trying to say that you can BUY animations? Lmao.
There is a limit to how good animations can get before things start to lag. In a game of this massive scale, I'd rather have a 200 man battle with minimal lag than pretty running animations.

Bollocks! You're talking complete crap. So you're saying that if the game is amazing it wont sell because it doesnt have fancy advertising while other games that are crap will sell because they are advertised
I dont need Aventurine to advertise their game to me because I already know about it. The advertising is a waste of their time and money. If the game is good then it will sell itself. I like the fact that they are putting all of their money into making the game. The fact that they dont give a shit what people think is great because they know that the quality of the product is the ONLY thing that matters. Stuff advertising!
This is what they are resorting to now? Awsome. More promotion for Darkfall and pretty much proving Tasos correct with what he said in the MMORPG.COM interview. Keep it up OP...fear is a powerful advertisement to the masses because they know when people fear something that usually means it is important enough to check out! Darkfall has come so far from the lol vaporrrzzzzz days....im glad some of the trolls are sticking around to give us a good laugh.
actually, fear is not a powerful advertisement. Advertisement is a powerful advertisement.
You do realize that 99% of MMORPG players don't read forums? They just buy the box and play the game.

Fear is a very powerful marketing tool. When they sell products like Lysol, they often brings kids into the commercial , and mention how susceptible they are to germs and getting sick. They want you to think your kids will be sick if you dont buy it. Thus motivating you with fear.

I think gamers are pretty well informed when it comes to MMOs. Most people Ive gamed with, even the more casual ones seem to know just about any title I bring up with some working knowledge of the game itself.
Console gamers, perhaps, fit that bill a bit. I can see them being more prone to seeing a commerical once or twice and having that sway them toward a purchase while standing in front of the video game case with some extra cash in their pocket.

Of all the MMO i played i never noticed advertisement ...
RL friends and/or Guildies have given me the tip...DF is because of my guild recruited someone who wanted to play the game badly
Something like "what you don't know about DF ? "
He later left for building up his own DF Guild but now we allied
But before he left he invented the "DarkFall Department" in our Guild ...intresting ...not

TROLL ALERT.... If is not one thing with you ppl is another. W.A.R had a huge ad, but the game suck and like some one said before, the best way to ad is by customer reviews. So STFU and wait until january so you can troll all you want.
A weapon doesnt make a Warrior Legendary, Is the warrior who makes the weapon.
Good marketing is the key to sell ANYTHING..crap or not. Look at Britney Spears. The more a product sucks the more marketing you should pump out..to make it "look good".
A good product will sell itself by mouth propaganda because thats the best marketing you can get. I have a ton of friends working in marketing and advertisement...mainly the areas of print and tv commercials in Agencies like Y&R or Ogilvy(one of the biggest worldwide). They will all tell you the same...mouth propaganda is the best and cheapest BUT also the hardest to achieve . And Darkfall does exactly that..it actually makes people like you to talk about it! You are doing marketing here and right now!
AoC squeezed out massive advertisement and still does..even this site is plastered with banners..but nobody really cares any more no matter how much snow mammoths they offer. Their product simply sucks and all you hear from people is "dont try it!".
Also if you dont have a huge budget for marketing like Darkfall you need to find other ways to advertise it. -> Mouth Propaganda and therefore mainly Viral Marketing! Its damn cheap! Look you do it for free for them!
Please take some more of these marketing classes you talk about..or i can hook you up with my GF. She studies marketing for two years now and laughs about so much cluelessness after showing her that post. Darkfall actually has the best marketing ever! They caused massive discussions for years at no cost for them.
By the way why do you even care OP? Are you an investor? Do you risk losing money when Darkfall wont sell? Or are you just some basement troll who got his hands on the newspapers economy pages with all the cool words in it? This post already failed before the word darkfall was typed into it because your so called marketing knowledge is simply --- wrong!

actually, fear is not a powerful advertisement. Advertisement is a powerful advertisement.

But you have to see the advert first.
People that post and read forums think all gamers do the same, but they just don't. The vast majority of gamers just buy the box, and play the game. They read a review in a magazine like PC Gamer, or an online site like Gamespot, but they don't read forums, and don't post on them either.
PLus, I don't see the connection here.
The advertisement is waht? Buy Darkfall because it kills germs?

I think gamers are pretty well informed when it comes to MMOs. Most people Ive gamed with, even the more casual ones seem to know just about any title I bring up with some working knowledge of the game itself.
Console gamers, perhaps, fit that bill a bit. I can see them being more prone to seeing a commerical once or twice and having that sway them toward a purchase while standing in front of the video game case with some extra cash in their pocket.

Something like "what you don't know about DF ? "
He later left for building up his own DF Guild but now we allied
But before he left he invented the "DarkFall Department" in our Guild ...intresting ...not
