Next gen will be something you will know when you see it. Sooner or later a game will be released that makes WoW look as bad runescape does in this video: uk.youtube.com/watch Hard to say what it will be like as that the realm of fortune tellers, probably it will be like what we have at the moment but just bigger and better in every aspect. When you see a game that does this to WoW then we have a next gen mmorpg. When that happens people will be leaving WoW like rats off a sinking ship.
Why would you want millions of retarded WoW players in this new wonderful nextgen product? Let them stay there!
It's not up to me as I'm not making it, I'm sure the people who are would like a nice fat slice of blizzards customer base though.
The downside is that's a "lowest common demoninator" type of customer base - if I was a dev I'd not want to be catering to them.
heh next generation is a marketing tag. 'generations' can only really be defined after a new generation has come in and everyone generally accepts that it is indeed a new generation. Aside from that it normally takes the form of new hardware (PS3, Xbox 360, Blu Ray DvD's) and rarely does it occur due to software.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds -Solid non level based game -Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

Which is why I made a previous point about a "full body controller" as being a next-gen device all in itself.
The only next gen game will be this one :P. Emotiv
For next gen immersion I agree.
Jack me in.
Ditto. This will be when we truly go next gen imo. Table top was first gen. Video game next. And then total immersion aka truly forget RL. This also could be bad with out restrictions imo though.
Ah hell, next gen will be full virtual reality immersion. Matrix-type realism.
Then the RPG part of MMOs will inevitable, I guess. At last? Has anyone heard about this in serious, though long term planning, by any company? Is the technology seen realistically available at all in a not to distant future to a broad public?

No. Not by far. You need an ati firegl v8650 for Medical Imaging... And medical imaging is nothing compared to virtual reality. And knowing that the v8650 costs about... $2000-3000. Imagine what kind of a price VR cards would have, if they existed!
Before any company can seriously consider going VR, we'll need... at least 128 Gb of VRAM. Unless of course want to live in a world with runescape graphics. And even with such crappy graphics, none of the current hardware would be able to support it.
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
