There's little riding on Darkfall as far s the industry is concerned. If Darkfall fails it'll destroy alot of dreams but it won't hurt the industry considering they're a start up company with NOTHING under their belt development wise.
WAR did not fail miserably over all, it may of failed for some people especially WoW fans, the crafters only types, or the Hardcore pvp crowd (of course the hardcores were never expected to like the game they weren't the target audience) for it didn't fail for a rather decent amount of the population.

I think you are wrong. There is one possible situation where it could affect the industry. If such a game becomes a masssive hit, it will show something important about what can win today.
After playing at release, I found the game to be a fair entertainment value, thats all. The amount of fun in Warhammer was about the same amount as a lot of asian grinder games I've played waiting for other games. Games like Archlord, Perfect World, Silkroad Online etc were about as fun as this one. There was nothing that I would look forward to doing in Warhammer while I was offline. Some games while at school, work or wherever, you'd think about what you'd like to do when you go home and log on. Craft, farm, finally figured out a quest (you think), fish, etc. That was the weird thing about Warhammer: at no time did I ever think "Ok, I can't wait to log on and try X out or do Y." It was a game where everything was just.. snoring me to death. Being in a scenario was just as fun as doing a PQ, or doing a quest or trying to stir up trouble with the Destro side. It was all the same amount of slowness. The bugs didn't bother me as much as I saw them in lots of games. There just wasn't a fun factor. When I left that was the main reason. I see some people leave for bugs, lag, scenario burnout, class balancing and the like. Most of those things never killed it for me. The general feeling was like having tickets to a concert of a band you don't really like, but don't hate either. If the lead singer fell and broke his leg cancelling the show, you'd yawn and go see a movie. There was so much talk about "The Sacred Patch" coming out and fixing everything. When I looked at the patch notes, I didn't see anything other than the release of two classes that would have got my interest. The other things done were technical which was needed, but they wouldn't have added fun to the game. Playing a new class can sometimes make a game fun for a short time, but in the end, the content is the same. If the game was slow and boring before, a patch cannot fix the fun element. I think people came back so soon because there just isn't anything else out now that people can say "that looks good". I'd have to agree you probably would go with your first instincts about most things. I had the feeling that although the box still looks good on my bookshelf, it will probably stay there. By the time they got around to getting something fun in there, I would already be playing DF, Aion, Mortal, TCoS, or any number of new titles out. Sorry it didn't work out for you Elikal, but you were right about first instincts.
you didnt enjoy the game. I love it. The game is what a PVP MMO should be. And as far as the most recent patch, it was a RVR game changer. there is so much to do in WAR, it is almost comical you talk about fishing and farming. LOL, FISHING and FARMING. I would much rather do RVR, PQ, exploring, scenarios, questing, or a dungeon crawl...Dont act like WAR doesnt have plenty to do because it does. And with WAR, you jump right in and can do all of it starting at level 1. Again, you didnt like the game, plenty of us do. May I suggest you find something you enjoy doing with your time, other then hanging out on the forums of a game you dislike ? For your own well being, get over it, move on, find something to do with your life that interests you.
It may have changed RVR and has more people coming back to the game to check it out. But, if the number start going back down, that will be very telling. Hope they got it right this time, because, I don't think people will cut them much slack.

But there's nothing riding on it if they fail other than a hardcore niche's dreams(unlike AoC which the MMO market was riding on hoping for a success but AoC's complete and utter failure hurt MMO break out chances for alot devs wanting to move away from the WoW concept) . Honestly if its a massive success it will be...well a gift from the gods considering the odds against it.
They've never developed an MMO in the past, no one's even HEARD of their publisher, last i heard their publisher was strickly Euro based meaning chances of US servers ever even going up is low, and they're catering to an extremely NICHE market with completely no innovation as in not one mechanic they're offering is "new" or even 'like new'. They're offering nothing new to the table other than a focus purely on the hardcore PKer market. Hell even THAT's not really new.
I'm not saying that darkfall is crap etc etc there's alot of people that want a game like that to bring back their euphoria of times past with UO and they should get a shot at having a game made for them but in all honesty if it fails nothing will happen to the industry it won't even be a blow. If it succeeds moderately it might be a leg up for the hardcores but hardly much more than that.
Comment was strickly based on if it fails and had nothing to do with its possiblity of success since quite honestly I could care less either way.

To me this is the most fun ive had in a MMO sence DAOC.Sometimes i wander what game some of you are playing. You must be on low pop servers or just dont like mass PvP.Yes the PvE is weak, but it was never main point of the game.PvE= WOW or LOTR.WAR is kill or be killed. As for crafting i dont really miss it much.More time to ORvR.I'll just buy the stuff people make.Every one likes something different from a MMO and thats ok.I like WAR for the PvP.Sence the 1.1 patch there has been a huge zerg in ORvR and the lag issue is 100% better.
I didn't return to WAR but I echo the op's feeling. WAR was fun for me, all the way up to level 40, 32 rvr. BUT the rvr was soooo uninteresting to me. It felt like a grind fest with nothing left to explore. Grinding the same pvp areas over and over again, sometimes w/o actually fighting other people. I discovered I didn't like pvp much. If I wanted this kind of pvp gameplay, I would play some Battlefield.
Battlefield 2 or the wwII versions is a MUCH better pvp experience than WAR. Just about every MMO has been a better MMO than WAR for pve. Community in WAR was lacking too.......
Just want to remind people, I did enjoy WAR for the first 40 levels. I did enjoy seeing what was there to see. It was after I maxed, and was required to pvp grind for like40 more levels that I lost interest.

This is a good point to some extent, but it really shows why a lot of people didn't like it.
You acknowledge that the PvE is weak, which almost everyone does. So that leaves the Pvp, which almost everyone says is better than WoW. If those two things are true, which I believe they are, that means only one type of person would stay with this game very long. Thats someone who can PvP all day. That is not most people, hence the lack of fun factor and most people quitting before 30.
If you are a casual pvp fan this game will not keep your interest long. When you get tired of that, all thats left is the aforementioned weak PvE. The lore book won't do it. The PQs are for leveling up. So its either the scenarios or mass pvp. That is not much of a choice long term.
Most other games are a lot of quests good and bad, but usually better than Warhammers. When people get tired of them, then they do some PvP in the game. Or they go to the crafting or fishing or other things. With this game its the reverse; you do Pvp until your tired then thats about it. The PvE in this game is only for leveling, not really for fun or is fun.
The weird thing is Guild Wars is like this in that respect, but for some reason, that game was very fun to me for the 5 months I played it. It was fun from the start. (I had a Ritualist, Elementalist, Monk, Necro and Ranger)whereas this one, its just lacking something.
Dang, If this game passes 1 million people, I hope it doesn't turn into another WoW: A huge population game that's boring. Then again if this game passes 1 million people. Ok nvm I hope it doesn't The point is, this was a terrible game, I hated Warhammer so much. Everytime (2X a day) I think about returning to Warhammer I realize after level 20: The scenarios and quests are as boring as hell. And the RvR is stupid, plain stupid.
You have nothing to worry about. WARs subscriptions are going in the other direction way to fast to hit 1 million. It has a better chance of hitting 10,000 subs than it does at 1 million.

It was alright I suppose, pretty standard mmo game for these times. But having played doac made WAR seem like an unfinished game where the keep/orvr stuff was just thrown in as an afterthought.. What happened to the amazingly fun keep assaults/defense from doac? Tower wars? etc? Instead we got a static keep with static catapult locations and one single straight line from wall to keep lord, with none of the epic battles where say you had invaders breaching the walls on all sides. Now those were battles!
Granted I didn't see any of the level 40 rvr stuff in war, so maybe it got better.. whats the word on that? still linear dull wars, or a lot more dynamism at end game?
this game had so much potential. I am not resubbing, instead i am going to a bookstore to buy a warhammer novel to read. Its more fun then to mindlessly clicking and seeing " you are disabled" message all over the screen. (if I dont crash to desktop or lag out)
games i am playing:
Railroad Tycoon (great old school game and no CTD...)
A couple of players from our mmo guild have went back and they say they are having fun, they have re-rolled on a new server and went desto this time,I can understand why it maybe fun as I did enjoy playing order...too start with,I am sure I would enjoy desto for a bit also but...
I think it is way to early to go back and try again(yes I know why comment if I havent tried it again)well its simple,I have no desire to hear 1 more "fancy Tor Anroc"said to me,yes they may have improved the ORVR but with all the scenario grinding and zerg so called ORVR keep takes still leaving a bitter taste in my mouth I cant for the life me seeing how this game would have changed enough for it to be worthy of another months sub because it had 1 so called super patch.
I had a look through all the fixes and add's and while it was for the best I just dont see were it has changed the game around, for me it sounds more like it has turned a boring game into a slightly boring game.
I will try WAR again at some point but it isnt near that "point" yet, maybe in another 6 months.
*disclaimer...these are my thoughts so save all the "go back to wow posts as I do not play that game either .
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"
"Returning...and gone again already" Well this is good news!!! Please go back to WoW Warhammer is a great game, and good luck in High School Musical land!
You'd think that such a devoted fan would care that his playerbase is vanishing.
OH HOW HORRIBLE IT MUST BE TO BE A DEVELOPER TO ONE SUCH AS YOU.

I never was in WOW =P
It must be relaxing to live in a world of such easy expanations. Everyone who has my opinion is my friend and everyone who has another is a troll and WOW-kiddie.
Somehow I am surprised humanity did survive this long, but thats a mistake nature just atm does its best to remedy.

I fail to see how the gameplay is unbelievably simplified , especially not the combat... When we compare the combat to say , the biggest MMO of all time WoW, a game that is often held as the standard for other games, we see that the combat in WAR is much more complicated than WoW and ever bit as fluid. In WAR you have tactics and morale abilities as well as "masteries" which is something WoW does sort of have,, which add a whole SLEW of customization and options. You could have a chosen who has the same masteries as someone else of his same class (happens ALL the time in WoW , because there are many cookie cutter classes, as with all games) but with completely different tactics and morale abilities , or maybe the same morale abilities with different tactics or vice versa. So i fail to see how the gameplay , especially combat, is "unbelievably simplified." On a different note , sorry things couldnt have gone better for you.
----------------------------- Real as Reality Television!!!
Heh, trying again after just 3 months? Way too short time for a game to change. Maybe you'll never like WAR, maybe you should just wait until it is at least 6 months old, preferably a year. It takes some time to change a game around, if you didn't like a game at launch you are not gonna like it just 3 months after. Give it a try again next summer, if it won't work out then the game is not for you at all. Taste differs as usual, and everyone don't like the same games.
I agree, waiting 3 months just isn't enough time to let the game develop more. Wait for a couple content updates to pass and then give it another try.
You know, there is the saying "you never got a 2nd chance to make a first good impression". Being the nice guy I am I usually give people as well as games 2nd chances. But truth be told, usually our first judgement is as right as it ever gets. Its more hope or want to belief that makes me try out again. In WAR it was an entire waste of time. And money. When I started WAR first I was quite delighted and enjoying it, but as with many around level 20 the fun started to dwindle a lot. I played only two chars to 30-something, an elf and a human, so I could not be too burned out by the content. However, now I have tried out the Knight a bit, it was surely an ok class, but nothing of the overpower some said. Pretty normal class imo, more or less as good as any other in WAR. Which mean, underwhelming. The new class is just as simplified as every single part of the game. I really started to feel boredom already after an hour playing it, even tho I had left the game almost 2 months ago, or so. Its like when you meet your ex, the former boy/girl of your dreams, and ever so often, when time has passes, you look at him/her and wonder, how you EVER, EVER could have loved him/her!? And so it was with WAR. Kinda. Ok I never LOVED WAR, but I liked it a lot, I had fun for quite some time, but now, after two days of gaming I felt so BORED, so WORN out of this unbelievable simplified game play... I cant say how I ever enjoyed playing this game. I must really point out that I am chronic returner; often I return and try out MMOs again, and almost everytime I at least enjoy it a few weeks. Only VERY old MMOs, like SWG or CoH, when I returned I was bored after such a short time, but usually with games I had played years. Warhammer is just an incredibly dull and boring game, now with a certain emotional distance, when I am above the waves of hype and disappointment, I sincerly feel WAR is one of the most boring, dull, repetitive MMOs I have seen for a LONG time, maybe THE most boring of all AAA titles. Its not that something is totally borked, but I totally feel zero urge to explore the world, to make a 2nd life in this game or whatever you want to call it. It just bores me to death. *shrug* I really tried to enjoy it, trust me. But this MMO really is in my perspective the failure of the decade. Even plagued MMOs like Vanguard or AoC had at least some decend fun stuff. WAR just plays like rationally designed lackluster stuff from people who really didnt care at all about it. Its so terribly sterile and dull. No offense to those who enjoy it, its just how I feel about it.
The last paragraph sums it up. You like many others are burnt on the genre and you dont even realize it :P
Seriously I wrote a Huge post in general discussion about this very topic and most agreed with me. Vets like me and you have played waves of these games really cant find a game to replace your first love. For me it was UO. I think its a good idea to take a break from the genre. I took a long break from 06 till two months ago on the release of WAR and it did me good. I really dont see anything coming out other than the new Stars wars game by Biorware that will probably be even remotaly as polished as WOW or WAR. These games have huge resources poured in them. An I really wouldnt count on DARKFALL, if it gets released IF,,,,, it will probably look more like dark and light. We will star
You konw what. I feel the same way the Original Poster feels for another game though. Hmm what was it?
Oh Guild Wars. I feel all the same thing stated in his post about Guild Wars. It is a game that has no motivational drive. The classes are potentially complex but they force you to isimplify with limited abilities. The sound effects don't match the game. The combat just doesn't feel explosive. Its more of run away, hit a spell and run some more. the story line in the game is completely uninspiring. The PvE is boring and drone like. I feel no need to explore.
Does all this mean that Guild Wars is the biggest MMO failure? NO. It is a game that doesn not fit my playstyle. I don';t like its style. There is nothing technically wrong with it, and many many people love it. Everyone on these forums can agree the game is good.
So why state WAR is the biggest failure MMO when it is not? It just doesn't fit your style. I love the game and it bleed with lore like no other MMO ever. I see tons of life in those simplistic animation of characters. From voice acting, Tome of Knowledge, to small acted otu scenes in warcamps and capital cities. The game has tons of life and lore. It just isn't presented in a way you like.
I personally feel this thread accomplishes nothing because it does not truly state any specifics. If MJ were to read this thread, he would scratch his head and say, "Well what the hell am I supposed to do? The classes are to simple and incomplete? They have Morale abilities, Tactic slots, Master trees , and about 25 - 30 abilities each. Waht more can I do to complex these classes?" If you can't clearly state the problem or at least give a vague solution, then how is this thread going to help the Mythic dev team fix anything?
Oh Guild Wars. I feel all the same thing stated in his post about Guild Wars. It is a game that has no motivational drive. The classes are potentially complex but they force you to isimplify with limited abilities.
You lost me right here.
You think that Warhammer with 3 trees that you can't really mix/match are more diverse than the classes in Guild Wars classes and almost infinite possibilities? Seriously? No kidding and for true?
Just taking one class, a warrior and mixing it with a Monk you can hurt and heal. Or a Assassin same way. Or a Ranger mixed with Necro. Or an Elementalist and a Dervish or Paragon. You can even get downright goofy and go War/Ele or Monk/Necro. Then you throw in all the crazy skills from both classes and not having to worry about the mess that is Warhammer armor specs to depend on.. I really don't see how you say a GW class is more simplified than these guys. You are limited there by your imagination. That was one of the best things about GW.. you never knew what kind of class was in there before you went in. Think your necro is gonna own? Doh. The Warrior put on a different sub. You are dead.
In Warhammer, you have 3 choices for your class, that's it. And you can't do much outside of your developer made role. You are not effective if you pick half a tree in this game. Can you even pick half a tree and half another tree? Lets see.. you can be a Swordmaster with 3 trees.. balance, tanking, dps. Oh wait.. if you show up in a scenario or mass battle as a Swordmaster DPS or balance (no shield) etc,, you get laughed off the field. Now really, which classes in which game are being 'forced' here? And if you ever see an IB doing anything but tanking, youre probably looking at a level 1 IB. Talk about forced.
You make good points in your post but saying GW classes/combinations are simplier and forced more than Warhammer isn't one of them.
Guild Wars is a simplier GAME, I'll give you that. But in no way are the classes simplier. You can't get much simplier and easier than Warhammer for PvP classes. It's all made out for you in the dev notes from inception.
I fail to see how the gameplay is unbelievably simplified , especially not the combat... 3 trees which just enhance a 30% of your class.
Tactics which offer you -small- buffs to your class generally to help what you got for masteries.
Morale abilities which are your major abilities on a 60 cd you have to build for. You generally choose between DAMAGE UTILITY(healing/buffing) SURVIVABILITY
I know your super hyped over your favorite game. But really WAR doesn't have that much character customization. Heck wow has glyphs now which function VERY similar to tactics, except you have to buy and switch em out in towns(or craft em). And morale abilities which are unique to WAR.
Take a shaman in wow for instance. you can spec to be a fully functional healer, a fully function meleer, or a fully functional dps caster. Not a true wannabe in any of it's trees. You can then choose your glyphs, your enchants, and your gear, and go play.
Heck i'd go as far to say even AoC and CoH offer comparable customization.
WAR isn't anything special. It has TERRIBLE mastery trees, but combined with the other options its ONE solid function. so even if wow was just talents vs all 3 options of WAR, its still pretty close.

"Returning...and gone again already"
Well this is good news!!!
Please go back to WoW
Warhammer is a great game, and good luck in High School Musical land!
I'd consider resubbing but they moved my server's population around so much while I was gone that I doubt there are any of my chars left
"TO MICHAEL!"
You are right.I loved that you could place your siege weapon where you wanted.Plus i miss seeing walls come tumbling down from my catapult assualt.
elikal is known to dislike pvp. so of course you think its boring, its pvp focus game.
My blog:
just so sad...
this game had so much potential.

I agree, waiting 3 months just isn't enough time to let the game develop more. Wait for a couple content updates to pass and then give it another try.
"TO MICHAEL!"
