The best tips I ever got to play EVE

I am pondering going back in for a five day trial to see how the new expansion has changed things, and was tooling thru the forums here to see if I wanted to, saw lots of requests for newbs, so I thought I would share my limited wisdom on the subject.

YOU WILL LOSE SHIPS!--- PLAN ON IT!!! if you have three ships sitting in the hanger, losing one don't hurt so bad. I can't say this enough, don't fly what you can't afford to lose.

It takes 3 months before you can really fly decently, with enough skills to make the game worth it.

It takes a month for most to learn the game, just the basics mind you.

Join a good corp, it doesn't have to be the bomb, but arrogance in this game can be a killer for newbs.

There are three basic ways you can go at the start, pvp, mining, or carebear (PvE)

If you mine, be cheap, your ships are gonna get popped.

If you Carebear, expect to get popped when its time to get out into low sec and make money.

If you pvp, be prepared to be aggressive, and have everyone hate you.

Finally, specialize, specialize, specialize. Anyone can fly a big ship quickly, but few can fly a small ship to its peak. If you want big, give it a year, if you want small, give it a year, but in a year, you will be able to shuck it out with the best pilots, and even take a few of them down easily, if the odds are on your side.

I became an assault frigate specialist as a tackler with guns, and it really made the game shine for me. When I left doing that, I got bored with the game, so where you go depends on your temper. If you like crafting and socializing, be miner, if you like strategy be a carebear, if in every game you wanna pwn, be a pvp'er. The nice thing is you can dabble in all aspects of the game, except 0.0, where you really should be a specialist.

I took two months in before I decided my course would be pvp, and went into 0.0 at about six months. I could fly cruisers, destroyers, and frigs, all with guns. I got into a corp with folks, had a good time, learned to fight  in 0.0. Learned to lose a ship and not cry, and yes, had a lot of fun. Learned to be a diplomat with the russians, give newb advice, and find out the real game is in 0.0. All told, I had a lot of fun, but the game became very boring to me on many levels, when I decided to try and make money for future plans. Maybe this time I take my assault frig out to 0.0 and join a wolf pack to get up on the kill boards, because shipping trit killed the game for me. Economics and worrying about blueprints just was not for me.

******** Oh, and don't be afraid to fly small, a tech 2 assault frigate is the first to be destroyed cause everyone is scared to death of 'em. ********

trolls, you may now create flamage for several pages about everything I forgot to add, and how stupid this advice is.

Well, I for one think you gave very good advice.

And now, I'll offer you just a little of mine:  If you do decide to come back, don't bother taking your assault frigate to 0.0.  Take it to low sec instead.  With Quantum Rise, AFs have become fearsome beasts when attacking BC and BS sized ships, and, unless they are specifically setup to handle small ships, you are almost immune to their damage.

See for yourself solo, or, better still, join a good pirate corp for some real fun!

This game would have set the new wave for MMOs if they could have found out a way to ditch the ship theme and use characters.

They are working on a new game about vampires: World of Darkness.  Be prepared.

To add to this don't assume that just because your a new player you can't do anything or even try to compare what you can do compared to anyone else.  EVE is not about the 1v1 game its not about the preset 3v3 or 5v5 arenas that are the common place of many other MMOs. EVE is about bringing what you got with a bunch of people and coordinating the group to work effectively. It can be 5 people or 50 or 500 either way there is no limit so get out there and try something.

EVE is like a deep book, It may take a while to get started but it's an unforgettable experience at the end.

I'm an endgame EVE player, and I love it.  A new player may not know where to go or what to do at first, but that's part of the fun: exploring the sandbox.  Join a corp and just have fun with the guys while you learn the game.  Even after 2 and a half years, I'm still just chillin with the guys.

If you want to pwn from the start, EVE is not for you.  Think about it though, should anyone be the best in thier first couple weeks or even first few months?  I personally don't think so.  If you want to be the best at flying one particular ship though, you can become *VERY* good at it quite quickly and take down much older players if you play your cards right.  Assault Frigates are an excellent start for new players these days.

Give the game a shot.  Don't be an impatient wuss and actually try to play the game.  It pays off bigtime once you get deeper into the game.  I can't even describe how fun a fleet fight of over 1000 people is.  Alliance warfare in EVE easily trumps any PvP in any other game i've even heard of.  Period.
