I've been playing the trial for several days and I must say that I like Vanguard. I can't join for the next 2 two months because of real life situations.
From day one and within the first 10 min. of playing, I noticed that this game is smiler to EQ2, but as I play I'm finding it's exactly like it !
Graphics:
Characters are the same. Very detailed yet when standing next to other players they often seem un-proportional to the surroundings.
Buildings are the same. With all my settings maxed out, the buildings don't quite look 3D. To enter them I find that you have to square up your character to enter.
Landscape are the same. Rocks seem to have a floating way about them, and shore line's have un-natural square shape's to them. With all setting's maxed, close up grass is lush. But just off in the distance it looks like a flat green rug. Trees are extremely beautifully and landscape could be seen from far away.
Trees and viewing distance is the only thing that sets Vanguard apart from every other game, and it done it very well.
Animations same as EQ2. With Hesitations, slow movement's and using abilities( I'm nottalking about computer glitches, their just slow). It reminds me of the old dial-up Internet days, it's like come on "move already".
Targeting and loot. Here you definitely have to use <tab> every time, mobs are imposable to single out. I've seen several people complaining in chat about this. But I find it's ok when you get used to it. Loot boxes are too big on your screen, in a heated battle they can block your vision. Targeting loot can be very very tedious.
Maps:
Same as EQ2 all the way.........very un-clear, undefined topo maps, with no detailed information and almost useless. This reminds me of the 15 year old outdated GPS's used for hunting. The biggest kicker is when searching the Internet you find the same maps. This is exactly how searching the Internet was in EQ2.
Internet search :
Finding anything on the Internet is like puling teeth. It's their but you have to really search with tons and tons of message boards, but SOE seems to lack details, just like EQ2.
Music :
Elevator music that does not always fit. just like EQ2.
With all this negative, would I play Vanguard.....YES..... cause all this is frivolous stuff as compared to game play.....game play is everything, and In reading from forums and taking everyones word for it. Vanguard should have a lot of deep rich game play. AND THAT'S WHAT COUNTS
Comments
How very unusual. I disagree with everything you said aside from Vanguard having the superior viewing distance.
I'm certain that once you've played for longer, they really have little in common.
Did you play EQ2 for any length of time?
I'm not flaming you by the way. I've played EQ2 for over 4 years now, and spent a year playing Vanguard (which was more than enough time to gain a lvl 50 character in every class), so you could say I'm experienced, and curious as to why you have a completely different opinion.
I played EQ2 on and off for a few years along with most every MMO. My feeling with their art direction and design has no baring on game at all. Every game can be picked apart, and it's all OK !
My topic was meant to just spot the similarities between them both, and I really find them exact. And that's why I pit one game against the other, however that's only my opinion as with most every topic on this site.
It's kind of like WoW and Warhammer is the type of game that was done with a sharp marker and feels more analog. EQ2 and D&D Online was done with very sharp colored pencils and feels more digital. LOTRO has a little of both. I could go on and on with about 10 other popular games( in my opinion).
But I'm in it for game play anyway, and that's why I can't wait to play Vanguard cause it seems like a good game. With all my points I've made it still looks good and everything can play well with some getting used too. ( except the maps, I really really hate the maps in both).
One last thing before I go.
Maps are everything. It's like playing WoW, the new players don't know where the dungeons are, so they freeze up and don't go to them. Map system's could be one of the underlying reasons people quit games.
EQ2 was soooo confusing, and Vanguard could be the same way, but I'm not sure yet !
I think there's more going on here than a difference of opinion. I can almost always appreciate why someone says something, but what you say about similarities between the two games and maps make me think you're either on a wind-up mission or have a mentality that I've not encountered before.
If you're sincere, then I hope you enjoy Vanguard. If you're not, then it really doesn't bother me anyway
Maps are important but compared to EQ2 VG maps are simplicity. The problem with EQ2 is that there is no overall map persay. Getting to butcherblock of bonemire is a challenge in figuring out what all the ports are you gotta take. For me one gripe I have about EQ2 is that it really feels like a bunch of zones connected with random teleports. Getting around in eq2 is quite a challenge.
VG on the other hand has a wonderful map that shows the whole area and you can zoom in and zoom out on. You know where you are and you know where anywhere else is and how to get there. I'm playing eq2 now and enjoying it but this is one of the things I think they get poor marks on.
So yes EQ2 maps confusing and difficult. That is when trying to get around. However in a zone the new maps are quite nice!
VG maps for getting around are very natural and simple. Very much like real life.

This bugs me as well but I think most people don't really mind it that much. For eg, melee animations could use an improvement, they're just too slow and doesnt look quite right in my opinion. Eg, look at melee animations from nwn2, fluid, smooth, visceral, etc.

Try setting the animation speed to max...
Glad your enjoying the game, see you in 2 months
Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve
well i waited until they had the island in and then i looked at the trial and decided 14 days is not long enought . so i had a look on amazon and got a full copy for 99p + 2.50 PP must of wanted to get rid of them . having said that .im enjoying myself on vanguard as well finally kicked the wow disease after 3 years
After playing the trial, I can't wait to play also. But I'm stuck in a hotel for the next two months with my laptop. I had the trial loaded in both my home computer and laptop. The trial played well in both, but friends with me are playing wow. Since I showed them how to play wow I'm obligated to play with them.
With playing the Vanguard trial and gathering all my research from the net and massage boards. I'm expecting Vanguard to play well on my home computer, I'm expecting low populations, and deep content.
I'll consider the low populations to be a challenge of my social skills and my knowledge of MMO's to help find groups and guilds by using the LFG panel, often adding friends along the way. When the time is right for me to play, I'll ask here for a good strong guild that uses Ventrilo ( voice chat program, used in gaming that runs in the background ).
Guilds using Ventrilo could be the ticket to making a low populated game bearable. I'll have to just hope that I'll be able to find one !!!
I put my finger on why I'm looking so strong at Vanguard, and it's because of dungeons. In my research it seems that Vanguard is loaded with them. Nothing like getting with people and working together. After all when I think about it, dungeons, asking questions, and a little social chat are the only reason I interact with people. As far as questing, it seems to me that it's hard to get people to help quest in any game. Questing is my alone time used to figure abilities, and play style or when I'm just in a bad mood.
Graphics and similarities to EQ2 have no baring on ANYTHING AT ALL. You people that scream for great overpowering graphics got what you deserve with Age of Conan and what Vanguard was for two years !!
MY opinion about graphics is just a power struggle for the ones that have $600 video cards and your trying to justify and brag. Well I have a super computer also, but it's only to run smooth. I'll play an old out dated game as long as the content is their. Games like Dark Age of Camelot are still great games, better that some newer games. It's just that Dark Age of Camelot, Final Fantasy 11, and others like it need a major overhaul of their UI, as they can really suck sometimes.
Sooooooo, see you in about two months, and have a great day everyone
