Why Tabula Rasa really failed.

SwiffSwiff Member Posts: 28

The name. Tabula Rasa. WTF? Who wants to play a game called Tabula Rasa? It sounds like a chronic skin condition. I know it's Latin for "Blank Slate," but dammit, no one speaks Latin except lawyers and the Vatican.

The English meaning "Blank Slate" doesn't make things any better. Blank Slate? In my mind i picture a game designer, looking at a blank page, unable to come up with any original or interesting ideas. And that is not a reassuring thought.

Anyway, thats my extremely shallow and myopic take on why Blank Slate (oops, Tabula Rasa) failed.

Yeah sorry not buying it. Plenty of people understand some Latin. It is not just lawyers and the Vatican.

They don't call it a dead language for nothing.

lol I would like to beleive it was the fact that the game was very linear and repetitive... not the name :)

The ultimate solution to every problem: more space marines.

Richard "Lost in Space" Garriott and his idiot brother ruined Tabula Rasa. Nothing and noone else.

I had a lot of fun in TR but they really made a single player game with lots of people playing at the same time.  Had some outstanding ideas and I hope are carried on in other games.  Issue is you can play through it and not really need to group that much.  What I cant work out is how they are releasing mech units and a lot more PvP content now when its going down.  You could argue that if they had this at launch they would be going strong now

in my eyes, management failed in promoting and publishing game. It was released too early and too many people rejected it in start. They should have plan players that were reaching lvl 50 in just few weeks (maybe even less, idk) and end content for them, at least something, anything, buggy or not, anything...

just imagine if game was released NOW! it would kick! But again, that would mean longer beta fase, so longer beta development means no money in that period of time, it would have to be in some kind of open beta to be able to get all that feedback from players that is implemented today in game.

I'm gonna miss TR very much.

I agree with this.  There are so many elements in TR that I never saw in any other game.  I had some epic moments defending a high level control point with a few people and holding out.  I am actually quite sad that they are closing this game because I did want to see it flourish and once the mechs were back and more content i would have jumped back in for a fix.

Personally I think TR failed because it was launched too early and secondly, like most companies they ignored content that focused on RP and down time from combat.

EVERY MMO needs an indepth activity outside combat.  Either it be a solid crafting path, exploration or puzzles.  Gamers who want combat 24/7 go to PS3 or CoD etc.  People who play MMO's want a lot of combat but also the chance to spend time with friends and guild members in other activities.

Some of the best moments I have had in any MMO has been in EVE mining with 20 guild members and chatting on Vent or even better crafting in Vanguard and seeing what your mates are making and chatting on VENT.   Sometimes we have done this all weekend and as its for the guild i.e. resources or bricks etc.  Its a worthwhile event and a time to have a break from grinding.

Its almost fair to say that in Vanguard we played 6 months longer than we did due to the crafting element and missions.

Tabula Rasa needed one massive drop ship or center where people could go to and have some time out.  Puzzles, PvP, sci-fi sport, whatever.  Either way I am sad its going.

I think the OP was trying to be funny.  I give him a C-.
