WAR is mostly PvP with very little PvE at the moment. There's only four dungeons, I think, at end game that are PvE. If you love PvP this would be a good choice, but still I wouldn't see this game lasting longer than two months if you play a lot.
AoC is mostly PvE with some PvP options such as sieges. There are many PvE grouping dungeons. Still it is very easy to level and you could finish the game in a month if you play a good bit.
WoW is your best bet at the moment if you want a game that is well rounded in both PvE and PvP that will last awhile.
i just resubbd to AoC i found war a bit boring it was really fun at first but then got reallly repetative. I hav started playing on the PVP server in AoC and have never had as much fun it makes the game so much more interesting and the PVP is really intense so i would say go for AoC WAR is fun for a bit but it is a blateant WoW clone with pvp
I THINK WHAT HE MEANT TO SAY IS IF YOU LIKE ENDLESS GRINDING, BEING PIGEONHOLED INTO A ROLE IF YOU PLAY A VERSATILE CLASS AND REPEATING THE SAME INSTANCE 50 TIMES THEN WOW IS FOR YOU.
CAPS LOCK MAKES THINGS TRUE?
I would say AoC, even though I haven't played it. I have played WAR though, up to tier 3. It is pretty repetative, but I do believe it gets it's best by T4
I THINK WHAT HE MEANT TO SAY IS IF YOU LIKE ENDLESS GRINDING, BEING PIGEONHOLED INTO A ROLE IF YOU PLAY A VERSATILE CLASS AND REPEATING THE SAME INSTANCE 50 TIMES THEN WOW IS FOR YOU.
Sounds like WAR except your just grinding buggy senarios over and over and there isnt anything else to do. Look at all the people that left already and all the server merges weeks after release lmao. Atleast in WoW you get tons of options. Anyways back to the OP, I would give AoC a try.
hey just wondering what game is better all round in PvE and PvP? plz give your reasons
thx
I like WOW. There are so many different ways to fight. Arena (5 v 5 teams), Battlegrounds, Lake Wintergrasp(huge, open world pvp area), or just mess around with the local pvp objectives while you are leveling ( halaa etc).
In AOC, you basically level through pve, and then get to pvp. The pve is pretty bland. Ending seiging is decent as long as you roll on the right server. Right now there are only about 4 servers that have a decent population out of 30ish overall. Because of the extemely low population of AOC, there are questions about it's long term future and even if it does survive, most of the dev team won't.
Warhammer is the exact opposite of AOC. You can level by pvping. The problem with Warhammer is that endgame is totally broken. Basically you try to capture enemy cities, but first you have to lock zones, then capture forts. The problem is that if there is any 'defense' of the fort, the servers crash and the zone lockin is reverted. So then you have to recapture keeps and battle objectives again to lock a zone.. only to crash again while attacking the fort. The only tme Forts can really be taken is late night, when nobody is defending. When Forts are taken and the actual city can be sieged, then players find out that actually capturig the enemy's city is 95% a pve thing. You kill city npcs and other game-controlled opponents.
The other major problem goes back to the beginning of 'zone-locking'. the exact methods to lock a zone are unknown.. you can literally take every keep and every Battle objective and not be able to lock a zone. What has been determined is that if the enemy is about to lock your zone.. you simply move to a different zone. The attacking team CANNOT lock an abandoned zone ( a big part of the locking mechanism is killing enemy players). You see this all the time.. you are about to lock a zone, and suddenly the enemy just disappears and you are stuck.
Warhammer also suffers from very clunky fighting mechanisms. You can't time anything. I like WOW, because if the enemy has a 1 second cast time, I can use an instant spell to interrupt him. IN Warhammer, nothing like that can take place. You run up to an enemy and press the same few buttons over and over and the spells fire 'whenever'. You also can't tell anything from your avatar.. the animations do not at all show you what is actually happening in the fight. Your character is probably doing an animation of a spell you cast 4 seconds ago.
The other game you didn't mention is EVE. EVE is pretty hardcore. But if you don't like WOW, I would certainly recommend playing EVE over AOC or Warhammer. Warhammer and AOC are losing subscriber numbers for a reason. WOW and EVE are gaining subscribers for a reason.
He never asked for game recommendations I would say WAR, contrary to popular belief(/opinion) there is a pretty strong PvE element if you so choose to go that route. There are more than 4 dungeons, they just lack loading screens and are 'public' dungeons. Instead of just you and your group they instance for about 5-10 players altogether. So if 10 players go into one of these public dungeons a new instance of it creates itself. As for fully instanced dungeons, 4-10 seems about right, mostly (See: all) in Tier 3 and Tier 4. WAR's main PvE elements come in the form of the Public Quests. There's not a ton of people doing PQs anymore, but they're a fun way to pass the time. There are quests too but bah, when you have PvP like that who does quests anyways? :P The PvP is definitely the meat of game, with keep sieges starting at Tier 2 (level 15-21) and ORvR starting back at Tier 1 (level 1-12). Scenarios start at Tier 1 too and they are not buggy. The only bug I have encountered is the most annoying graphical bug I've seen but has been fixed with the latest patch. The PvP is very intense though, some of the most fun I've had actually. Especially since most of the community is nice and mature, you actually get teamwork.
I have not played AoC yet (it's on my list of games to buy once the price drops) although this is what I've HEARD. The game does have a strong story element with fast paced combat that gets repetitive fairly quickly. The PvP is fun, fast, and intense, although not as strong at WAR's. The game is shorter than other MMORPGs but a good tromp through the world and an altogether fun experience. Just not a game that will keep your attention for more than a month or two.
Thank You,
- Eric
PS - I actually do recommend you check out WoW while they're on the subject. As much as I dearly HATE the game, it may suit you. PvP element isn't strong (actually it kind of sucks) but the PvE is fairly large. At least you get a trial for WoW unlike WAR or AoC.
At the poster who claimed WAR has timing and animation issues. They have been fixed. With the latest round of patches they have fixed many of the horrible bugs that plagued it when it came out. Which is why I quit, I came back this month to a big surprise. The animations line up like they should and everything has a proper, correct cast-time that actually works :P

If you like to do PvP then WAR definetely. It allows you to level mainly by doing PvP where as in AoC you have to do PvE to level. Also I feel the WAR world seems more genuine than the one in AoC, pretty as it is but it doesnt really feel like a world. Just instances that you zip zap to.
I raced out and bought collectors edition of AOC and when I realised who made it new instantly it was not going to be good. I hoped however that they learnt from anarchy online and wouldnt repeat the same problems.
Firstly, it was laggy, got repetative quickly though there are many quests and the night / day side of it was interesting it only lasted for the newbies area. At times the terrain colours would vanish and all that would be left was a black formation with white gridlines and this happened constantly.
The PvP was a farce, the worst I have ever..ever come across. You can actually get ganked during the trasition screens in PvP areas and be dead even before you can see anything. Theres no structure to it, it's almost like they dont know what it is and work on it as they go.
In the end I wished I had realised who created it, would never have got it in the first place, now it sits in the bottom of the pile waiting for the next clean up so I throw it.
Now I had to decide between WOW lich exp and warhammer, in the end I went with warhammer based upon the fact I played wow for ages and left due to grind issues / boredom and a highly one sided PvP system. Though I have seen the expansion and teh graphics are amazing, I am satisifed with my desicion to go with War.
I hate PvP, just so you know. I find I actually enjoy the RvR aspect and dont mind the scenarios so much either. There is a heap of PvE content and the levelling in comparison to WoW is a lot better. I have a 18th level character and a few lower ones but the 18th has about 18 gold all from adventuring none from auctionhouse. Horses which become available at 20th cost 10gold as far as I know, a lot better considering when I played Wow it cost me over 100 to be able to get one and be able to ride it. Aparently its much cheaper now.
Unlike WoW, when you die in War you just have a count timer while you are getting over the rez sickness. Luckily you rez right next to a healer and for a small cost he cures you of your ailment. And at 10th level I think it cost about 3 silver.
Overall I am more than happy with my desicion to go War I find it to be a lot of fun and lots of challenging PvE content as well as great RvR, the scenarioes are a good filler for that bit of xp when you dont feel like doing a lot of travel. Add that with some live event quests they have at times keeps it rolling.
I should also mention that PvE and the RvR / scenario content is tied together as far as advancment is concerned. It doesnt mean you cant play the with without needing to PvP, it just means that if you do PvE and PvP you character will have more build. As you level in RvR you gain access to stat and skill increase as in combat skills, not to mention RvR skills. As you level in general xp, you gain new attacks and abilities. Combined thay make for a more rounded and capable character but you can actually go through just on PvE alone the choice is yours.
Basically, craps all over AoC and less monotenous than Wow, like the fact that crafting is basically make potions or make talismans with a number of resource gathering skills to keep you potioned up OR with talismans to fit to your equipment. Your main gear like armour and weapons and such are easy to find, either as drops or from auctionhouse.
My Votes on War then Wow and dont even bother with AoC.
It depends on what type of PvP you like. If instanced pvp (scenarios, Battlegrounds, arenas) are your thing then either WoW or Warhammer will suit you. If you are wanting more of a world PvP again it depends as I find more world pvp in WoW than Warhammer as in WoW everyone is all over the map while in Warhammer its pretty much in the rvr lakes that you even encounter the opposition..
Warhammer - I find true world pvp lacking in Warhammer as the game is set up you rarely cross the enemies path except in the RvR lakes. When you can get a full warband going against another full warband then the pvp rocks! But often its a warband taking undefended keeps (pve) and BO's (pve) which I find to be a grind after the first few times. Even locking the Tier it's still boring to me!
The scenarios are fun and at least offer more of a variety than Wow's few battlegrounds. If you're in a premade or guild only it can fun, or in a competent PUG. A bad pug and you'll hate them - lol.
Pve in Warhammer - I've done all the quest lines in both sides start area to lvl20ish and something is just missing. I can't put a finger on it but I don't enjoy the PvE side of Warhammer - I log on to PvP (scenario or Rvr) then log out. Beautiful game, love the major cities and attention to detail in Warhammer though.
WoW - on the right server (chose and older established one) there are areas that are known for high levels of pvp, the current achievement system has both sides invading cities for certain achievement quests - so that has added to it. As there are a number of contested zones everyone is flagged so while you quest you may kill or be killed - but need to be aware of your surroundings. I don't ever feel that in Warhammer unless I'm in an rvr lake.
PvE in WoW - can be a grind, but some of the spoofy, cartooning things are amusing - I can actually do the pve content in this game at least. WoW is fun, but if you can't stand the cartoonish feel, and the immature chat (I know not always, but more than in the other games), you'd probably like it. Take the free trial and see.
AoC - I played that from beta for a couple months, it can be fun, but I think is the weakest of the three in all areas. It's more gank or be ganked than actual pvp. I never made it past level 35 as the mechanics of the game drop me nuts. It may have improved though so I'd take the advice from someone still actively playing.
PvE was not horrible and the game is beautiful to look at. The start area on Tortage was great the different story lines for each class, etc.
Honestly though for PvE - EQII or LoTRO are much more fun and engaging. PvE on EQII I've never got past the teens on a toon on the PvP servers so I'm not qualified to answer. It was fun, definitely presents a level of danger while questing, but the game really is about questing with an overlay of pvp.
LoTRO haven't tried the limited pvp that is provided yet.
